  • First State Bank of Malta Celebrates 120 Years

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Jul 12, 2023

"It's a beautiful night in Malta, Montana! We had a good turn for the folks, very good music, and had a great celebration for the First State Bank and their 120th year," were the words shared by First State Bank President Bob Galt as Front Street was blocked off to accommodate the crowd that gathered for the evening. Attending the celebration was Scott Meneely, who quickly summed it up, "It's been fantastic, it's been a great time!" The weather was cooperative, there was a silent hush in the...

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Jul 12, 2023

It's a rare moment that one can catch up with Robert Plouffe at his place of business, the Saco Pay-n-Save, however, it's an opportunity to savor the aroma of fresh fruits and meats while he scurries and bustles between customers. He appears to have more energy than the Energizer Bunny, or comparable stamina. His love for his work shows on his face through his friendly smile. Don't kid yourself or be misled, Robert is a dedicated man...dedicated to his family, his work...and his community. He...

  • Dino Day: Yabba Dabba Do ~ We Had a Grand Old Time!

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Jul 12, 2023

Approaching the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum (GPDM) last Saturday, one was greeted by the creativity of the young-at-heart amateur paleontologists' artwork that welcomed guests and visitors for a fun day for all ages. The sidewalk served as a chalkboard, or palette, and was graciously decorated with the likeness of dinosaurs created by many age groups. The Kiwanis set up their hamburger grill and served 100 hungry enthusiasts and ran out of burgers. Malta Kiwanis President Mardy Demarais said,...

  • VFW News: Never Forget Our Hard Fought Freedom

Sharon Kindle, Patriotic Chair, VFW Post 4067|Jul 12, 2023

By now the glorious 4th of July celebrations are gone for another year, but lest we never forget our hard-fought freedom and we are still fighting for it. Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. On July 4th the signers of the Declaration of Independence asserted that all are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. With these words, our forefathers formed a new nation and put...

  • PCN Article is Fridge Worthy, Thank You

    Jul 12, 2023

Dear Editor, In reference to the message, “Reflecting on a Grateful Nation” by Kari Hould in last week’s PCN, thank you, Kari. I am going to clip your column and put it on our fridge door. You are right on this date, July 4, 2023. My parents came from Norway at a young age to find that future and hope in this “Grateful Nation.” We can do that by what we do and say. You mentioned, Kari, that kindness does not hurt; you are right on. As we think about our business's downtown, churches, schools, doctors and nurses care, banks and so many serv...

  • Asphalt and Sulfur Can Change Things

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jul 12, 2023

The railroad bridge collapse last month that spilled tanker cars full of liquid asphalt and molten sulfur into the Yellowstone River was hardly the first indignity the river has suffered. A broken oil pipeline under the river near Billings a few years ago comes to mind. So does a broken sewer line over the river at Gardiner, to name a few. The longest free-flowing river in the lower 48 has taken some abuse. Before the rail line between Livingston and Gardiner was discontinued, trains used to del...

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Jul 12, 2023

This is the first thing that I have written since my arrival back from Sweden, and it is safe to say that I am still battling jet lag. A few weeks ago, before my departure, I wrote a column noting some of my own personal struggles with battling through depression and I have received a few letters from readers. I want to say that I appreciate you all reaching out! I hope that it was in some way useful to someone. To those struggling, we need you here and love you. My family’s trip to Europe w...

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Jul 12, 2023

What a week! After working at the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum on the Fourth of July, Cindy Clark invited me for dinner. It was nice and relaxing. I think the only other people in Loring were the Boschees later on. The town was very quiet. The Lumsdens and Blunts spent several days at Nelson. I spent a lot of time planning for the Kids’ Day activities on Saturday. And when the day came, I feel that it went well! About 70 kids plus parents were enjoying the activities and the movie Jurassic P...

  • Ranchers Benefit from Fencing Projects with Ranchers Stewardship Alliance

Kayla Walker, For Ranchers Stewardship Alliance|Jul 12, 2023

There's been entire books written on the history of fencing in the West. The evolution of barbed wire, the impact fences had on the landscapes, and the range wars that ensued when fences first went up are all remarkable and fascinating stories that will forever stand in the history of the American West and the ranching industry. But when those same fences that made history are still standing today, plans to upgrade have likely been discussed. Modern day ranchers, however, know the harsh reality...
