Malta was host to 378 swimmers and their families and coaches this past week-end for the Montana Federation of Swimmer Eastern Divisional. In an event where only the top twelve individual swimmers qualified for the State Meet next weekend in Hamilton, The Malta Swim Team placed 26 of 28 possible. At the Eastern Divisional swim meet in Plentywood, the Malta Swim Team only had 19 of their 45 swimmers, however 18 swimmers qualified for the state meet in Roundup this weekend. Malta took eighth overall as a group and 13 of the 18 state qualifiers placed in the top twelve in all three of their events. The Malta Swim Team has only one more meet before Divisionals and for having so few swimmers in the pool, the team has done well and they have been improving weekly. This was apparent at the swim meet in Scobey last Saturday and Sunday as most of the nine swimmer present saw their times drop during events. The Malta Swim Team fared well in Eastern Federation Swim Meet, which they hosted, finishing third among teams present at the event. The team took second in relay events. Malta Swim Team brought 29 swimmers to the first swim meet of the season in Harlem. The team placed second out of 12 competing teams. "All the swimmers swam very well, especially for only having 3 days in the water for practice," said PCN Correspondent Yvonne Garfield. On August 2 through the third the Malta swim team went to Conrad for the state meet. The team didn’t place amongst the top teams this year, however there were several swimmers that placed in the top ten of their respective divisions. “The kids swam hard. They put in a lot of effort as Malta kids do,” Malta Swim Team Coach Donnie Lynn told the PCN. “That’s one thing I have no complaints about. The Malta swim team showed up 26 strong at the Lewistown swim meet last weekend. Young Midget Darrow Messerly and Senior swimmer Jenise Amestoy, led Malta in scoring, with 34 points a piece. Messerly, who was sick for last week's meet bounced back hard, claiming two top finishes and a third place finish. Messerly won the Men 9-10 100 meter IM, with a time of 1:31.39 and 50 meter breaststroke, with a time of 45.36. His third place finish was in the 50 meter freestyle, an event in which he posted... The Malta Swim Team only brought five swimmers to the Glendive meet last weekend and even without help from state champion swimmer Darrow Messerly, the team fared well, with all five qualifying for the top 12 for the final rounds. Last week the Malta Swim Team had a one day meet in Plentywood. The team did good considering the team only had nine swimmers representing the team opposed to 30-45 swimmers from other teams, but the team was unable to compete for a placing. They were sixth of seven teams. Normally the Plentywood and Scobey meets are held on the same weekend, due to the fact they are a day long event. Even though the swim team only had 12 swimmers present at the Roundup meet, the team took home sixth place out of eleven teams that attended. Janessa Malmend was the big winner placing first in the 11-12 100 meter freestyle with a time of 1:23.91 and first in the 50 meter backstroke, with a time of 42.15. She took fifth in the 50 meter breaststroke, with a time of 47.79. Malmend scored 36 of the team's points. The team had two relay teams in the 11-12 women class and both teams won. The team... The Malta Swim Team took third at their home meet last weekend, led by 10-year-old Darrow Messerly, who pulled out a hat trick in the pool, winning in three events. After having a rough year in 2013, due to a majority of the swim team being in the lower parts of their age bracket, the Malta Swim team will look to make noise this year. "Most of these age brackets go in two year age brackets," Malta Swim Team head coach Donnie Lynn told the PCN. "About 70 percent of our team was sitting at the bottom of the age bracket.
