Dear Proud Phillips County Citizens, We wanted IT, we needed IT, and we got IT! Now what??? Let’s keep IT! The “IT” I am referring to is the River’s Bend Assisted Living. We may not understand how we can help when we don’t have someone to move into River’s Bend now, so I thought I could share my opinion regarding that.... I love doing that! One action we can take is to support the amazing lunch meals provided by River’s Bend, Tony, Emily and awesome Chef Barb. The Congregate meals they prepare for Seniors are Tuesday, Thursday...
I have started reading the Phillips County News back when the Regina Mt. mailman delivered it with the once-a-week mail, rain, or shine, even when it was with a tractor. Always enjoyed it, of course there was a lot more pages back then. Just like a habit, if I miss a week, I think I’m missing something. Now Parker Heinlein outdoor columnist takes up space. He does like our Phillips County outdoor opportunities. I usually don’t waste any time to read his column, but have read enough to know, he leans left. So, what if this is the good ole US...
Dear Editor, I am writing this letter mainly to any Phillips County farmers or ranchers who are considering putting their property in block management. If you do, please consider your neighbors, their property, and their rights and how it will affect them. When the out-of-state hunters roll in, the block management soon becomes overhunted. Some hunters choose to trespass on neighboring farms and ranches to fill their tags. The signs placed for block management work only as good as the people who monitor them. Nothing ruins a quiet morning...
Long time rancher and congressional candidate, Ric Holden, recently spoke to the Prairie County Grazing Association, in Terry Montana at their annual meeting. Holden took part in discussions concerning the Bureau of Land Management decision to allow for the removal of cross fencing on government pasture allotments requested by the American Prairie Reserve. Bison tend to naturally congregate around water sources, which stresses and denudes these fragile areas. Holden stated that, "our family has...
Dear Editor, I am writing this in response to the adults who think it is okay to make negative comments on Facebook and in the classroom about a student athlete. First of all, my grandson is a wonderful young man and he does not deserve this kind of bullying. Every one of these bullies do not even know him or anything about him. I called Malta Schools twice trying to get on the agenda leaving voice mail with the superintendent but my calls were never returned. I believe the two junior high teachers who made comments on Facebook and comments in...
Dear Editor As most of you know Hi-Line Retirement Center in Malta closed early last fall, partly because Medicaid did not reimburse the facility the cost for skilled long term care per resident per day that it costs. At least ten others in the state have closed, with several others just barely staying open unless the state can increase the amount of reimbursement, those will close. Daryl Toews, former state senator from Lustre, Mt. wrote a letter to the Phillips County News the end of August concerning this issue. I wrote to him and he called...
Dear Editor While traveling the highways between Saco and Malta, you can't help but notice all the antelope on the north side of the highway. I was thinking about them, and the game we have now and what I can remember as a boy in the 1940s. There were no deer. There were no antelope. I never saw an antelope where I was raised south of Saco until the late 40s, maybe even 1950. I have no idea if antelope came down from Canada, in the hard winter of 49 and 50, I know I never saw them, there weren't any deer either. The BLM land in South Valley...
Dear Editor, My Father Egil Solberg was in World War I, my brother Les and brother-in-law Bill Murdock were in uniform during the Korean Cold War in the 50's. My uncle Clarence was in uniform during World War II. Two of my aunts were "Rosie the Riveters' during WW II. Son Jeffery was in the Peace Corps. Son-in-law Ronnie was a paratrooper in the Army. Granddaughters Jerilyn and Daisy were in the Army. Grandson Hector was in the National Guard. Foster son Joe was in the Navy in 2000 when he met President Bush on his ship the USS Lincoln. War is...
Dear Editor, I had hoped that this letter would not have to be written but the problem at the nursing home does not seem to be going away. The need to spend county money is all caused by one man, Governor Gianforte. January 2022 I met with the Governor's people and asked for help since Medicaid was only paying about 60% of the cost of keeping residents in the nursing home. The normal rate was 95%. Almost all the department heads in Montana are from out of state, and I thought they had just made a mistake that is easily fixed. They said it could...
Dear Editor, The Hi Line Retirement Center is being closed. The CEO of the Hospital and Clinic says there’s no funding, however, he found money to hire 5 new PA’s and started renovating the clinic. It seems like smaller renovations and 2 or 3 PA’s would have been sufficient and the rest of the money given to the Nursing Home. Instead of closing the Nursing Home and getting rid of our Seniors, let’s get rid of the CEO from South Dakota and get a Malta person with a HEART and COMPASSION. The Nursing Home has been open for years. It is...
Dear Editor, I’ve heard some real disappointing stories and I was wondering what you know about the Hi-Line home and our hospital / doctors office? Is, or was, the census at the Hi-Line up near 40 residents recently? Is the door that used to connect the home and the hospital emergency room closed off now? I have seen 2 ladies pushing a gurney through that door and they were running. The patient didn’t have to wait for the ambulance or pay the expense, and the patient was tended to quickly. When my father, my mother and both my wife’s...
Dear Editor, I read Kari's Quiet Corner today. In response, I would, especially, like to see acts of kindness stories printed in the PCN. I realize they would not be a regular feature, and it would take a 'listening ear' to garner those stories. Another thing: I think it was when Eva Solberg was writing for the PCN that she wrote articles about Phillips County's senior citizens. I found them interesting. It has been said "that everyone has a story". That was 'brought home to me' when I attended a celebration at Landusky a number of years ago....
Dear Editor and Readers, Transformation is an interesting word. According to Merriam Webster’s Online Dictionary, its definition is 1) to change in composition or structure, 2) to change the outward form or appearance of, or 3) to change in character or condition. When President Obama said “We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America,” what was he referring to? That’s a big question, but not a difficult one to answer. To some, the transformation would seem that he wanted to ruin the country, that...
Thank you for all your support as we embark on our 53rd season! The start of this summer was undeniably rocky, as we navigated around COVID cases, virtual rehearsals, cancelled flights and missing materials. We are in the final week of tetris for our Rep schedule: rehearsing & building 3 shows all at once, over a 3-week period. I wanted to address a little hiccup in the branding for our programming: The Complete History of America (abridged), written by the (in)famous trio of comedians known as The Reduced Shakespeare Company, is definitely a...
Dear fellow Americans, Remember way back in 2008, as he was making a presidential pick me speech, Barack Obama said we would have to "fundamentally transform America?" Where good is evil and evil is good. Look around you, abortion - good. Pro-life - bad. Stealing is okay just as long as you steal from the right people or businesses. You can even kill somebody gets out on a no-cash bond and do it again, all in the name of equal justice. You don't transform something you love. I love this country, I love what it stands for, you can come from...
Turning compassion into action has always been the Red Cross way, but we certainly don’t do it alone. That’s why we want to thank you for making Red Cross part of your community. Last year, Red Cross volunteers helped 714 people in Montana following disasters like home fires by providing food, shelter, clothing and emotional support. When emergencies like the Pine Grove wildfire strike, we meet families’ most immediate needs and let them know they’re not alone. About 90 percent of our workforce are volunteers who train year-round to...
Dear Community, At this point in time, we would like to give all of you in Phillips County an update on the status of Hi-Line Retirement Center. Throughout the past year we have run into several challenging issues, The greatest challenges facing Hi-Line Retirement Center is labor shortages and low census. Pre- COVID, the facility’s daily census was 42 and was fully staffed. Post COVID, the facility census is averaging 30 residents; it is becoming increasingly difficult to find qualified staffing. In order to operate profitably the facility...
On March 7, 2022, the Phillips County Commissioners passed a resolution to request voter approval for a local option motor vehicle tax on the June 7, 2022 federal primary ballot. Approval of this issue would place a 0.5% tax on all new light-weight luxury vehicles with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price over $100,000.00 or more and all new motor homes over $200,000.00. The additional cost for title and registration would be $500.00 for a light-weight luxury vehicle with a manufacturer’s retail price of $100,000.00 and $1,000.00 for a...
Hello to all, Constitutional Initiative 121 or CI-121 is a proposed initiative petition currently circulating to gather enough signatures to qualify for the ballot this November. If asked, decline to sign the petition for CI-121! We must keep this misleading ballot initiative off the ballot. CI -121 is not in the best interests of Montanan communities, businesses, or schools. We need to protect new homeowners and keep families in their homes. Small businesses are already struggling. We need to protect them from a tax shift that could...
Dear Editor, Hello to all, I'm writing to invite people to come to church. The pastor of the Methodist Church of Saco and the Little White Church of Malta is a thought-provoking pastor who tells it like it is. He tells us what we need to hear, not what we want to hear. Church in Saco starts at 9 a.m. and Malta, I think, is at 11 a.m. Pastor Steve's sermon from last week was eye opening, and to hear it tune in to KMMR at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Thanks for your time, Sam Kindle...
Dear Editor, Last spring I, Lowell Young, was watching Operation Outdoor Freedom on the Discovery Channel. It is a great show that honors our Veterans. At the end of the show it said that if you wanted to nominate someone, to send an email with their name and story. I nominated Darin Dimas from Poplar, MT. Darin served a tour in Afghanistan with the Montana National Guard. He also has two sons that were Army Rangers. Three weeks after I submitted his name I received a call from the producers of Operation Outdoor Freedom and they wanted to tell...
Dear Editor, I wanted to take a moment and thank Todd and Brenda at The Loaded Toad for all their help in getting me the medicine I need. I have been treating my own throat cancer because I refuse to go the traditional mainstream medical establishment route of destroying my immune system to kill the cancer cells. The odds are not in my favor and so I decided to go a more natural, God-given route for my treatment and use cannabis. I had read about all the anecdotal evidence that suggests that cannabis can kill cancer and found information about...
Dear Editor, My name is Angel Arocha, the Mayor of Dodson, Montana. I have occupied that position since being appointed to the vacant seat in May of 2021 and elected in November 2021. During my tenure, the City Council and I have worked on a number of exciting projects by bringing technology to our little town along with other projects that we are pursuing for the improvement of our community. Apparently, a potential problem with the conduct of the last election has been reported to county election officials. There seems to be much outside...
Dear Editor, We received a clipping from a Seattle newspaper about "Malta," an island in the Mediterranean Sea, our namesake here in Phillips County from Pat Milne Hitchcock, a 1953 MHS graduate. Her father, C.R.Milne, was a fuel distributor for Standard Oil and Mayor of Malta in the 1960s. The article was about cannabis and its use, which is comparable to our new laws here in Montana. "Malta (the Island) legalized cannabis possession and cultivation in December for personal use by adults, took steps to set up what could become Europe's first...
Dear Editor, The My name is Saleena Davis and I am about to tell you about my life at M.O.I., which is also known as Malta Opportunities Inc. I moved into the group home in 2013. It gave me the opportunity to meet great staff and clients and to meet personal goals to succeed in life! There has been some good times and rough times! There are great staff and clients who have come and gone that I will truly miss! But there are still great staff who are still here to help us clients to succeed in life! So, like I said, I have been here since...
