VFW Responds to Anonymous Letter

Dear Editor and PCN Readers:

To the group of people who anonymously gave the VFW Auxiliary a letter on their feelings on the Veterans Day dinner, we would like to address some of your issues.

1) As far as the menu goes, we do not know who is a diabetic or not. We can not plan meals around everyone's health issues. We all have different ones. But on the other hand, you know if you are a diabetic or not; and if you can’t have two starches, then don’t eat one.

2) As far as it being crowded in the serving area, tables were already set up for us before our group got there. Also, we served 15 to 20 more people than we have at any other Veterans Day.

3) The auction brought in five times the amount than any of our other fundraisers. We did try a raffle last year and just broke even after all the bills were paid that were involved with it. As for the auctioneer, he never claimed to be a professional but at least he got up there and volunteered, unlike the rest of you. If you saw him struggling to see you then you could have shouted out to him to get his attention, but instead you chose to do nothing. Having an auction is no different than having a raffle, by the way, it was approved by our District President and the Department Vice-President so we were not dishonoring the Veterans.

4) The helpers were given a chance to eat. We cooked over 80 lbs. of ham and 40 lbs. of potatoes. As for the salad and buns, there was nothing wrong with them and the “buns” were actually dinner rolls, which are smaller. Most of us who volunteer still work full time jobs and again, we didn’t see any of you guys stepping up to offer to make them from scratch.

In all we just want to let you know that you could have come and personally talked to anyone of us instead of your letter that you couldn’t even sign.

We are here to serve the Veterans and their families. We have only five to six people who volunteer on a regular basis. If you don't like how we did it this year, then VOLUNTEER to help us next year instead of hiding behind a nasty letter.

Thank you.

Michelle Stevens
