Courthouse Building Project Underway
Clausen and Sons Construction has begun a 1,800 square foot building project at the Phillips County Courthouse in Malta.
The project will replace two old buildings, one a lean-to, which had been used for storage and by maintenance workers and groundskeepers, according to County Commission Chairman Troy Blunt.
He said commissioners decided it was time to replace the old structures when maintenance worker Willie Hammar fell through the roof of one of the structures this past winter while removing snow.
The new structure, which abuts the jail area at the courthouse will be a steel building with a brick veneer on the exposed sides, the commissioner said.

Builder Stops In Malta
The westbound Empire Builder pulled to a stop in Malta Tuesday morning, for the first time since Amtrack took over.
It caused quite a bit of speculation. Upon investigating, it was discovered that one agent in the eastern states who did not know that Malta was no longer on the railroad map had sold a gentleman a ticket to Malta, Montana, so the railroad was honor-bound to deliver him here.
We don’t know who the man was who caused the unexpected stop, but he was lucky to make it to Malta without hitch hiking 70 miles from Glasgow.
19-Year-Olds Will Need I.D.
Joseph T. Shea, the administrator of the Montana Liquor Control Board, said recently that all persons attaining the age of 19 should apply to their county clerk and recorder for a Montana Liquor Control Board identification card.
Shea said many licensees have said the only identification they will accept will be the identification card.
Persons who are 19 and older will be able to drink alcoholic beverages legally after July 1 of this year.
The clerk and recorder will require a certified copy of a birth certificate, an 11/4-inch by 11/2-inch photo, and 50 cents.
The completed application will be mailed to the Liquor Control Board which will prepare a green laminated plastic identification card. The card will then be returned by mail directly to the applicant.

Friday Dance Planned For Young Folks
A weekly Friday night dance for young people of school age will be a feature of the city’s summer recreational program, it was announced this week by “Bun” Lodge, who is in charge of the program.
Held at the city hall auditorium, participation in this affair will be limited to young people, Lodge said, and the parties will run from 9 o’clock until 12:30. Young people unable to dance will be offered instruction as an added encouragement to attend.
Lodge said the regular daytime program got underway last Wednesday with 100 children making a trip to the swimming pool at the Legion Plunge. This popular feature will continue each week until further notice.
The high school athletic field is now the scene of daily baseball, with games running from 9:30 in the morning until noon and from 1:30 until 4 p.m.
Starting next Monday morning, parents wishing their smaller children to participate in supervised sports can send them to the grade school playground where a directed games program will be conducted each morning between 9 and 12 o’clock, Lodge announced. This program will be in effect throughout the summer.
Tourist Travel Through Malta Reported Heavy
Tourist camp accommodations in Malta are strained to the limit and travelers find it practically impossible to secure a room in a Malta hotel without reservations, local hotel men and cabin camp proprietors report as the vacation season gets into full swing this month.
Tourists are turned away nightly from cabin camps and the peak of the season is not due until July and August. Travel appears to be a general exodus from east to west and from west to east with Canadians making up a good share of the tourists. In many cases, Canadians who live in the prairie provinces and further east are returning from war work in British Columbia and seeing a little of the United States en route to their homes.

1903
- Glasgow, the county seat of Valley county, was having a crime wave of major proportions and Sheriff Harry Cosner of Malta was having his share of trouble. Three prisoners had escaped from the county jail, a man by the name of Brown, another by the name of Hardee, and a third named McKinley. Brown was captured in a haystack near Hinsdale and a posse was organized to hunt the remaining two. Shortly after Brown was returned to the city jail, a mob broke into the jail and took Brown and hanged him from a courthouse window. Near Ninth Point on the Missouri River, while the posse was trailing Hardee, C.R. Hill, a member of the party, was shot from ambush. The posse fired into the brush and discovered they had killed Hardee. John Darnell, a rancher, discovered McKinney hiding in his house when he returned home. McKinney fired at him and dashed out of the house and Darnell shot and killed him.
- Eighth-grade graduates from the Malta High School were Annie Tweedie, Grace Tucker, and Ellen Blassingame. Floyd Hardin, Harriet Taylor, and Emma Trafton passed from seventh to the eighth grade and, Divilo Ebaugh, Ellen Tweedie, and Chapman Taylor passed to the sixth grade.
