Smith ties for 2nd in bull riding

Malta resident John Smith tied for second place in bull riding at the Vigilante PRCA Rodeo in Butte, July 15-16.

Beau Bill of West Glacier and Smith each scored 82 points on their rides and each won $437 in prize money.

Schwenke, Ramone 2nd in team roping

The team of Shane Schwenke, Zortman, and Spider Ramone, Hays, took second place in team roping at the CM Russell Stampede in Stanford on July 17.

They won $798 in prize money with a time of 5.5 seconds. The winning time was 5.3 seconds.

County seeks ideas on the rebuilding of pavilion

The public is invited to offer suggestions concerning the rebuilding of the Phillips County Pavilion at a construction meeting Monday, July 25, at 5 p.m. in the meeting room at the First State Bank.

“Nothing has been decided,” said County Commissioner Chairman Lesley Robinson. “They’re just going to come with some ideas we can go from.”

The pavilion, located north of Highway 2 in Malta, was damaged when the roof collapsed during the winter from accumulated snow, buckling sidewalls in the process.

Carl Kaasa wins $100 in 1st health care raffle

Carl Kaasa was the first monthly winner in the Phillips County Health Care Fund Raiser raffle.

Kaasa won $100 in chamber bucks.

Four monthly mini-raffles for $100 in chamber bucks each will be conducted leading up to the big event set for Nov. 8 at City Hall when a gooseneck stock trailer (or $4,000 in cash) will be awarded as a grand prize.

Carney wins pair of medals in Big Sky Games

Malta’s Darrell Carney won a pair of medals last Saturday during the Big Sky Games in Billings.

Wrestling at 180 pounds in the 26-32 age group, Carney split his two matches to claim a silver medal in matches held at Billings West High School.

The 29-year-old also won a bronze medal in the 800-meter run in the 19-29 age group against a complete field of runners with a time of 2:17.

NeVille third in 800 at Big Sky Games

Twelve-year-old West NeVille claimed third place in the 800-meter run at the Big Sky State Games in Billings this past weekend.

NeVille shaved four seconds off his previous best time and ran against four 13-year-olds in the finals. His time was 2:35.

New Manager For Penneys

Mrs. Berniece Vetter is the new manager of the Penneys store in Malta.

With her appointment as the Malta manager, Mrs. Vetter becomes the second woman manager in the nationwide J. C. Penney organization. About a year ago the first woman was appointed manager in a Worland, Wyoming store.

Mrs. Vetter comes to Malta from Glasgow where she was assistant manager of the Penneys store. She has been affiliated with Penneys for nine years.

Preparations for Fair are Nearly Completed

Plans for the 56th annual Phillips County Fair, Aug. 6, 7, and 8, are nearing completion, it was reported Wednesday by Marion Waters, secretary.

Some horses are already stabled at the fairgrounds in preparation for the pari-mutuel racing program which will be introduced this year.

The racing programs will be run on Friday night and both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Ball Parks Supervised From Now On

Arrangements designed to avoid future conflicts on the use of the local baseball diamonds were made by the city council last week when it designated Coach “Bun” Lodge as the manager of the south field and Felix McCollom as operator of the Trafton Park field.

In the future, any team or other organization desiring in using either field will be expected to consult these two individuals.

The council emphasizes the fact that both fields are for the use of the public and nobody will be barred. The arrangement is made merely to avoid confusion in dates and plans.

Housewives Urged to Save Fats as During War

In addition to cooperating with the President’s Famine Emergency Program by using less wheat, fats, and oil products, every woman can make a tangible contribution by saving and promptly turning over every drop of used fats to her meat dealer.

This statement was made by R.J. McKenna, State Director of the Production and Marketing Administration, who urged every woman to become a committee of one to salvage enough used fats so that a part of the edible supply can be contributed to fighting starvation in many parts of the world.

Fireworks Featured at Fair

Thearle-Duffield to Present New Spectacular Program

The Phillips County Fair Board announces contracts have been made with the Thearle-Duffield company of Chicago for a two-night display of the most elaborate fireworks ever shown in this section. The exhibition will be seen at the county fair, August 10 and 11.

Thearle-Duffield is the same company that provided the fireworks displays at the Chicago, New York, and San Francisco world’s fairs and many of the new fireworks features that were developed for those events. The company has also kept pace with wartime progress in this field due to the association of its president with the U.S. Army Engineers during the war.

100 years ago-

- Floyd C. Fenstermacker, a national geological surveyor, was killed near Wilder when his car stalled on a hill. He had been working with a crew in the Little Rocky Mountains.

- The Landusky school was awarded first prize for the best general school exhibit shown at the interscholastic roundup held in Malta.

- Sixty thousand trout were received in Malta. M.J. Reilly of the Matador had taken 12,000 for distribution in streams on the ranch, B.D. Phillips had taken 20,000 and Paul Hensen, 18,000.

- Fire destroyed the Freewater store building and its contents. The store was owned by Edwin Garland and Frank Zuber. Mrs. Sarah Garland owned the building.

- A marriage license was issued to George Questeaux and Josephine Garand, both of Lonesome.

- Hail struck the north bench inflicting damage on crops on the Dunnigan, Monroe and, Wuest farms.

- A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Sid Hould.

- Miss Anna Lee Survant had returned from Pitchfork, Wyoming where she had been visiting.

- Ellen Swanson, Ada Town, Evelyn Zabel, Violet Pancake, Dorothy and Frances Garrison, Bessie Cattanach, and Thelma Wuest were attending summer school at Dillon or the State University.

- Five freight outfits were in Malta after mine machinery for the Alder Gulch mines. Editor Smiley suggested it might be a good idea if the businessmen of Malta made some effort to get Valley County commissioners to do a little work on the road between Malta, Zortman, and Landusky.

- S.D. Leedy of Leedy was in town complaining about home-seekers, who, he said, we’re beginning to overrun the country and take up all of the water-holes. If something wasn’t done soon, he said, there wouldn’t be enough land to go around.

- Deposits of the newly opened First State Bank were nearly $75,000.

- Charles Whitcomb had sold his wool clip for 16.5 cents per pound.

- The Circle Diamond had shipped in 35 head of thoroughbred Hereford bulls and was trailing them to the ranch in Cypress Hills in Canada.

- Mrs. Charles Whitcomb was visiting Mrs. Harry Cosner in Glasgow.

- In a story outlining Malta’s chances for growth and importance, it was pointed out that two shearing plants were in operation turning out between 5,000 and 6,000 head of sheared sheep daily. The Little Rocky Mountain mining area was booming, a mammoth hotel was being built in Malta and a vast irrigation project was in the process of being worked out on paper.
