Rumble Strips, Sign Will Be Added To Intersection

Rumble strips and possibly chevron stripes will be installed at the intersection of Secondary Highway 208 and US 191 south of Whitewater.

County Commissioner Richard Dunbar of Whitewater said he has already talked to Montana Department of Transportation District Administrator Shane Mintz in Glendive about the intersection where a fatal accident occurred on Nov. 14, killing one person.

The commissioner said he alerted the administrator about “local concerns” concerning the intersection.

“We are working on doing a change order,” Mintz told the PCN. “The project is essentially done, but we still have the ability to do a change order that would install traverse rumble strips” which audibly warns drivers a stop is ahead.

“We’ll also try to install some chevron arrows,” he added. Motorists would see the arrows on a sign in their headlights at night when they approach the intersection.

“It’s just kind of warning you, hey, you’ve got to go one way or the other,” Mintz said.

Malta claims first football title

Mustangs outduel Baker 49-35 in an offensive showdown; Morris passes 2,000-yard mark

The Malta Mustangs and Baker Spartans traded touchdowns for most of the afternoon in a November fireworks display that gave the Mustangs their first-ever Class B football championship. Malta ended the season with an 11-1 record and Baker finished at 10-2.

Senior running back Mike Morris scored six touchdowns and pushed his season rushing total past the 2,000-yard mark as the Mustangs outlasted the Spartans 49-35 on a clear, but frozen field.

“I didn’t think that many points would be scored,” admitted a happy Mustang Coach Scott King, whose teams have been stopped in the semi-finals five of the six previous years.

“They’re a great team,” Baker Coach Don Schillinger said after the game. “We just couldn’t get them stopped defensively. They were powerful with both the pass and the run and they’ve got a good offensive line. We didn’t think they’d be able to throw that well on the frozen field.”

Stiles’ success at finding receivers in the cold weather was perhaps the difference in the game. Stiles, who finished with 227 yards on 16-of-24 tosses, was 15-for-22 for 213 yards in the first half alone.

“Obviously, I thought Kirk threw very well in the first half,” King said. “He went on a streak at one point and hit six in a row and he hit some key third-down passes. I guess it’s fitting that he saved his best for the last game.”

It Really Wasn’t 192 Below Zero

The new time and temperature sign at the First State Bank went slightly berserk when the first real cold weather hit this week, creating a bit of humor to cheer up chilly residents.

It was cold, yes, but 192 degrees below zero, no. It did get in the minus 20’s Tuesday and Wednesday, however.

Matmen Won Three, Lost One In Weekend Wrestling Meets

The Malta Mustang wrestlers won three matches and lost one over the weekend.

Friday night they were defeated by a strong team of Fort Benton Longhorns on the home mat.

Saturday at Denton, the Mustangs defeated Geyser 66-3, Denton 35-28, and Stanford 59-9.

The event was a double dual meet with Geyser and Denton teaming up to make one team, with Stanford, Fort Benton, and Malta the other teams represented. Scores were kept by individual schools.

Toy Clinic Is Announced By Farm Boys

The local chapter of the Future Farmers of America announces that its annual toy repair clinic is now in operation and is at the service of anyone who wishes this type of work done. Broken toys will be repaired free, either for return to the original owner or for distribution to other children at Christmas time.

The boys request that toys to be repaired be left at the shop by December 13, or earlier, in order that the work may be done before school closes for the holiday season.

Strater Snoosers In Bitter Battle Against Townies

Snoosers of the Strater Hot Shot aggregation moved in on Malta Monday night for the first of a series of gory whist battles expected to help fill the winter season. Against the Bucket of Blood, the Hot Shots dropped a match by an official count of 11 points but later claimed that a mistake in scoring had robbed them of victory. We understand a recount is underway.

Strater sent Tom Simanton, Sven Holte, Hugh Simanton, Dick Vogt, Ed Eskildsen, Kristen Sundseth, Horace Mathews, and Walt Campbell. The Bucket played Sandlie, Lesselyong, Monroe, Sumner, Harrison, Lloyd Thompson, Head and Elmer Hendrickson.

100 Years Ago - 1921

- The Red Cross chapter had opened a store for the disposal of worn garments and other accumulated articles, including items made by disabled war veterans.

- Harry Lyden was elected chief of the fire department. Glenn Liskum was made assistant chief, FW. St. Hill was treasurer, and J.F. Murray was secretary.

- The Saco Panthers, coached by M.R. Nelson, arrived in town for a basketball game and were beaten 50-7. The editor said “it was called a basketball game only because it was played during basketball season. Two weeks earlier it would have drawn a good crowd as a football game.” Stars of the game included Kenneth Liskum, Kenneth Murray, and Rader.

- 200 cars of Canadian beef stuff were being cleared at entry points for shipment to U.S. markets from Havre, Harlem, and Chinook.

118 Years Ago – 1903

- A note on female social graces appeared on Page 1 of the Enterprise. Girls expecting to rate as ladies were advised not to crack nuts with their teeth. Furthermore, mutton tallow was advocated strongly as a ladylike hand lotion.

- Elsewhere in the paper, it developed that a group of women’s clubs had banded together and raised $3,000 for the purpose of expelling Reed Smoot of Utah from the United States Senate. The ground was that he was an apostle in the Mormon Church.

- Instruments for Malta’s newly organized Malta Cornet Band had arrived. Editor Smiley remarked that the citizens were enduring rehearsals heroically, hoping for better things to come.

- A Professor Vaught had resigned his position as superintendent of schools here. Apparently, there had been a clash of temperaments within the halls of local learning.
