2022 Jim Schumacher Memorial Livestock Day to be held at the Great Northern Hotel

A good set of speakers lined up for the Annual Jim Schumacher Memorial Livestock day January 27, 2022 at the Great Northern Hotel. Below is a short description of the topic and speaker.

10 am: United Property Owners will discuss their suite against Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks regarding their bison EIS.

11 am: CHS nutrition consultant for our area Baily Hagedorn will be here to discuss feeding the cow during the last 1/3 of pregnancy and preparing for calving. With producers forced to feed low quality straw for a major portion of feed, most cows are going to face protein shortages as we get closer to and after calving.

12 Noon: Lunch sponsored by Malta Chamber and Agriculture

1 pm: State Veterinary Office, update on the Tuberculosis outbreak in Blaine County. The State has tested thousands of animals and will provide a report and where the investigation stands to date.

2 p.m: Montana State Economist Dr. Eric Belasco will discuss tax implications to reinvest into livestock after drought. With the loss of about 25,000 mother cows in Phillips County to drought Dr. Belasco will discuss the time and tax requirements for producers to re-stock.

3 pm: Implants can play an important role in calf growth. Wade T. Nichols, Ph.D., is Senior Technical Services Manager for Merck Animal Health, one of the world’s leading animal-health companies dedicated to the development, production and marketing of innovative, high-quality, animal-health products. Dr. Nichols’ key areas of focus are in field trial research, growth physiology, nutrition, meat science issues, anabolic technology, feed-grade products, and economic and management issues in the U.S. cattle industry.
