Scott King to be new Malta High principal

Middle School principal Scott King will be the new principal of Malta High School.

A recommendation by Supt. Kris Kuehn that Mr. King be reassigned to the high school principal post drew unanimous support from the Malta School District at their meeting Tuesday night.

Mr. King will fill the vacancy created by the announcement of current high school principal John Roberts that he will retire at the end of his contract at the end of May after serving in the post for nine years.

In other business, the school board tabled a motion that would have closed the rural Tallow Creek School.

Instead, the board will take more time to see if it can get a more solid assessment of just how many students might attend the rural school next fall if it remains open.

The Little Rockies Arts Association will produce a talent show to provide the grandstand entertainment on Saturday night, Kimball announced.

“Our goal this year is to sell 2,000 tickets,” Kimball said. Last year’s main attraction, Toby Keith, sold about 1,500 tickets while the Bellamy Brothers and Patricia Conroy sold about 1,600 tickets two years ago.

Board okays hiring a project manager

Malta school trustees last week voted to hire a project manager, sometimes known as a “clerk of the works” to serve as the district’s eyes and ears during construction of the new high school/junior high complex.

Trustees are expected to officially award at least the base bid for the project at tonight’s school board meeting.

Shell Station Changes Hands Here Recently

H.E. Jacobson, owner and operator of the Malta Welding Company, has taken over operation of the Shell Super Service station, it was learned this week. Former operator Bill Pray has moved to the Morris Motors building where he will have the Hudson agency under the name of Pray Motors.

The new station will be opened as soon as it is completely redecorated, according to present plans. The station will be all done over in the new Shell Oil design, according to Jacobson.

The station will be run on a 24 hour a day basis and motor tune-up equipment is now being installed. It will also feature the latest in the Shell line of appliances and auto accessories. Joe Stewart will manage the station, according to Jacobsen.

The Malta Welding Co. shop will be moved to the new station and the building now housing the shop will be made into a body shop to be managed by Matt Allen. “We also plan to enlarge the body shop in the near future,” Jacobson said. Jacobson plans to continue to handle the welding section of the spread himself.

Guard Unit Is Offered To Malta

Lt. Col. Pat Warren and Lt. Col. James Neely of the Montana National Guard organization at Helena were in Malta Tuesday night to discuss the establishment of a unit here. Col. Warren is senior U.S. Army instructor for Montana and Col. Neely is associated with the adjutant general’s office as state maintenance officer.

Col. Warren said the Adjutant General would allocate a cannon company or an anti-tank unit to Malta if the community wished to organize it. Strength of either unit is approximately 80 officers and enlisted men.

The local group will consider the matter and notify the adjutant general of their decision later.

- Scott Leavitt became a candidate for congress from this district.

- The Enterprise announced that Arthur E. Nelson, brother of Ben E. Nelson, had won the St. Paul mayoralty nomination with the largest vote ever cast in the city’s history.

- Herbert Kibler was named as a member of the Phillips County Boxing Commission.

- Dr. Cabbage was in town looking after his oil interest on the Bowdoin dome. He was enthusiastic about the territory and foresaw considerable drilling. Also, here on oil business was Fred Whiteside of Kalispell, who was also doing some leasing.

118 Years Ago - 1904

- Spring had arrived but times were still dull around town.

- The Valley County Commissioners had named John Hardin as supervisor of roads for the Malta district.

- The Enterprise editor had previously appealed for payment of delinquent subscriptions. This week he announced the results. He had taken in almost enough to pay the express on his patent newspaper sheets, $2.90.

- The editor also served bitter notice on the Glasgow Republican organization that unless the Malta end of the county received some recognition, the wrath of the electorate would descend upon the boys at election time. “There will be something drop”, the paper elegantly expressed it.
