Together in a land far, far away

Four Simanton’s from three National Guard units were able to spend a few minutes together while stationed in Afghanistan. Tory and Roy are brothers and cousins to Brian and Jon.

Speak up or be overrun

A trio of ranchers who already had buffalo roaming in their backyard urged residents to “get involved” and if necessary, to “fight it tooth and nail” or there would be problems down the road.

Team Coyotes

Things are looking up for the Lady Coyotes, according to head coach, Wendy Hopkins; there are four veterans back, two new students, and two eighth graders who would be “playing up.”

Sentenced in Federal Court

The U.S. Attorney General’s Office announced that in a recent federal court hearing, a 50-year-old Malta woman had been sentenced following her guilty plea for bank fraud/embezzlement by a bank officer, credit card fraud, and money laundering. Rhonda Lee DeVries was sentenced to 110 months of prison time, and a special assessment of $300. She was ordered to pay $3,811, 221.52 restitution and three years of supervised release.

DeVries was serving as Vice President of Operations for the First Security Bank at the time.

Where we gunna be?

New legislator, Senator Mike Lang, urged citizens to voice their opinion over the proposed re-districting. Lang was elected to HD 35 in the recent election.

Tinkle the ivories

Janice Roberts and her students showed up at the Malta Country Home and entertained residents. Students were Sierra White, Addison Ulrich, Justine Lamb, and Mckayla Foster. At a second recital, Sidney Meeks, Brylee French, and Jared Engebretson performed.

But, can you jump rope holding one?

Sixty-four individuals showed up and bowled at the Ninth Annual Turkey Bowling. Hunter Stolem won the Pre-K to 1st-grade category; Draven Lageson in the 2nd-3rd grade bracket; Kaden Bergos 4th-5th grade group; Shelby Ferrell in the 6th-12th grade category and Travis Lamb was the winner in the adult category.

Joy with twins

Macey and Tenley Lien, twin daughters, were born to Wyatt and Andrea Lien in Havre, MT. Howard and JoAnn Hammond are maternal grandparents, and Ree Simonson is the great-grandmother.

Wrestling n’ Ready

Coach Ryan LaBrie has state placers returning; Chris Doney (senior), Nolan Simanton (junior), and Jesson LaFond (sophomore). There are no fewer than six freshmen joining the returning wrestling squad.

Nod is no to six

When contemplating whether or not to switch to a six-man football team, Saco Superintendent Larry Crowder stated co-op football with Malta, is “a darn good deal” and they are not looking at any changes. Dodson stated they weren’t interested in six-man either.

Out in three

Dodson girls’ basketball team was eliminated from tournament action in three games. With only one senior, Dodson stated they would be back stronger next year.

Dobson going down

An icon in history, the old Dobson building, was torn down after being declared unsafe for use by state building inspectors. It most recently was used by M.O.I. workers for storage.

No excuses now

The Town of Dodson was being updated with the erection of street name signs.

Heading back…again

The M-ettes had qualified for their seventh consecutive Class B State Tournament.

Til’ death

Joe Peigneux and Ethel Kalkman were united in marriage in Havre, MT, on November 28, 1947. They would celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this weekend.

Oh! That quickly…

The girls’ basketball team from Whitewater, under Coach Mike Conroy, saw its 20-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt as the Penguins went from title contender to spectator in three consecutive losses. In a challenge game on Monday night, they fell short to Scobey 54-49 to seal up the season.

Fighting and defending

Army Pvt. Anna Pinnock has graduated from basic military training at Ft. Jackson, Columbia, SC. She is the daughter of Thomas and Joann Pinnock.

Once a queen always a queen

Pictured in a high chair, a beauty “Queen” was shown with a cake and wishes for a “40th victory over Time! Happy Birthday!”

First time is sweet

The Saco Panthers, after three losses to Whitewater this season, received their first-ever divisional championship trophy and are headed to the Class C State tournament. The team had put together their best tournament in school history to take over Savage in double over-time to earn the berth.

And it was a HUGE ONE!

Bill and Joan Hicks had donated the tree from their front yard for the city Christmas tree. Two Montana Power Company personnel used the company truck and boom truck to move it to the city park on Front Street.

Not so wise

Two men have been charged for felony criminal mischief after allegedly vandalizing an interior wall on the new Malta Junior and Senior High School construction site last week. Dan Neuquist, 17, and Wes Allery, 21, both of Malta had been arrested by sheriff’s deputies.

New names, new deals

Ron and Alice Anderson have purchased Camp’s Video and will rename it Central Video. They were planning to implement a “rent 10 videos—get one free” program.

Nov. 30, 1972

Young leaders in the making

Four Boy Scouts, Mark Halvorson, Carl Crowder, Barry Crowder, and Brian Ophus attended the city council meeting as part of the requirements to earn a merit badge in government. They were accompanied by Mrs. Percy Halvorson and Byron Ophus.

New babies

Births at the local hospital were a daughter born to Sydney and Kari Hould, and a son to Donny and Becky Green. A daughter was born in Havre to Terry and Jody Nesbit.

He died doing something he loved

Warren Lumsden, 56, had died Thanksgiving Day, while out hunting. Military services were held with pallbearers Jim Young, Vance Spencer, Gordon Kron, Jay Southwick, Sig Salveson and Frank Miller.

He leaves a widow and six children; he is survived by his mother, three brothers, and 16 grandchildren.

Here, foxy foxy…

Hardy “winter” hunters will be happy to know that Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge will be open to hunting red fox from Dec. 1 through Feb. 28th. Fox are usually hunted by stalking and using predator calls. When hunting by foot this sport requires patience, and skill, and each participant can receive a quality hunting experience.

Kettle pot ringers

Kenneth P. Murray, local Salvation Army chairman, announced the Christmas Appeal letter has been sent out.

Social event

The annual dinner and social evening which the VFW hosts will be on Dec. 2nd. The Auxiliary, their families, and VFW are invited. Leonard Anderson is in charge of the meal prep and Clarence Mikkelson will manage the social activities following the dinner.

Nov. 27, 1947

He’s the king of the silver dollar(s)

N. W. “Pete” Dobson, local Dodge-Plymouth dealer had the experience of a lifetime. Mr. and Mrs. A. Z. Sammons of Loring brought in 1,800 silver dollars. The coins weighed about 115 pounds. Sammons had been saving the coins since 1942 when he heard new cars would no longer be available to the public.

Fly, spot, drop!

In response to complaints by livestock owners, the BLM conducted an aerial hunt flying from Glasgow to Malta. This hunt yielded 22 coyotes; also being used was 1080 poison as a means of predator control.

Cradle Roll Meets

The Cradle Roll Mothers Club met at the home of Mrs. Earl Harden. Rev. F. W. Bruins was the guest speaker on, “What Baptism Means”; the social and courtesy program committee was made up of Mrs. William Ashby, Mrs. Lynn Bain, and Mrs. Harden.

Montana, the third largest state in the Union, if placed east of the Mississippi, would reach from Chicago almost to Washington, D.C., or from Washington, D. C. to the southern tip of Maine.

Those who serve

Pfc. George See, son of Mrs. Cora See, is now stationed with the famed First Cavalry Division which is on occupation duty in the ten prefectures of the Tokyo-Yokohama area, an army news release reports. The First Cavalry Division fought all the way from Australia to Japan during the war and was the first U. S. outfit in Manila and the first in Tokyo.

Wolf Point had won the county seat fight which had been carried all the way to the Supreme Court against Poplar and was now officially the county seat of the newly created Roosevelt County.

The Enterprise had made a mistake and was admitting it. A prison term of 25, not 10, was imposed upon a man by the name of Dye who had been found guilty of murder.

Prof. H. L. Brown had been prevailed upon to open a school of dance in Malta. With the approach of winter months, the gay young people of the community were preparing a series of happy events and wanted to be prepared for the latest craze in fancy steps.
