Winners of the Elementary National Geography Bee were Jillian O’Brien, first, Keith Epperson, and Colt French.

Garrett Giblette, Malta High School senior, has been selected to sing in the All-Northwest Choir. Outstanding student musicians from Alaska, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, and Montana make up the choirs, bands, and orchestra.

The Phillips County Hospital is in the process of joining the electronic age with new equipment and programs. They ask for your patience during this transition.

Local author, Colleen Barnard has written her first book and there will be a book signing at the library. Her creative abilities are entitled “Sarah the Seven-Legged Spider.”

Montana farmers who bought hail insurance will receive a refund of 40% of the premium they paid. The Montana Board of Hail Insurance issued 1,925 hail insurance policies covering nearly 1.8 million acres in 2012.

Dodson’s Jimmy Martin scored 21 of the team’s 40 points in the game against Malta JV, but they still fell short, losing 55-50 on Tuesday. Malta was led by Troy Manoukian with 13 points.

M-ette Mercedes Stiles hit a pair of treys in just under four minutes to bring her team back in front and win the game in a close game against Havre. The game ended 47-44 and was the first win of the season for Malta.

Five county girls’ basketball players received all-state recognition as Class C All-State team. Senior Kelly Marshall from Saco and Whitewater senior Haley Hammond were both selected. Whitewater junior Ashley Hammond and Saco senior Miranda Yeska and junior Brooke Beadle were named to the all-state second team.

Buttrey’s employees held a bake sale and sales were donated to the Angel Program. Buttrey’s itself also donated $150. Employee Elaine Newton presented Program coordinator, Claude Kielb, with a check to help underprivileged children get a gift for Christmas.

Local Kiwanis Club members will sponsor the Block of Bucks with proceeds to go toward Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD). Donors would receive a bag of peanuts.

It was a rough start for Dodson with a young squad as the boys basketball team lost three games in as many days. They were downed by Havre Sophomores 78-68, to Kremlin-Gilford 103-24, and fell to Joplin-Inverness with a score of 71-41. Ryan Lankford was leading scorer in all three games.

Heidi DePuydt, a seventh grader from Saco, won the local Elks Free Throw contest in the girls’ age 12-13 division. She made 19 of 25 shots to win the event.

Nathan Fried, a junior at Malta, added 10 points against Harlem to help with the 85-61. He also had four assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Some of the fourth-grade students at Malta Elementary School were pictured with gingerbread houses they had made. Pictured were Jared Pankratz, Jason Swingen, Lyndie NeVille, Melissa Wright, Brittany Simanton, Katie Smith, Ryan MacMurdock, Cole Wilke, and Erin Sanderson.

Lab and X-ray tech Carolyn Ripple has taken a job at Columbus; and Karla Coppedge, LPN, is moving to Billings. Jeanette Daniels has extended her leave of absence, and Joan Gerge, Home Health LPN, has resigned.

With the first week of competition underway, the Mustang grapplers are hosting a bug injury. Missing from action are Nick Silz (broken collar bone), Jon Green (shoulder), Lance Spencer (gone for the year with a shoulder injury), and Ryan Salsbery, who had knee surgery Tuesday.

D. J. Kovach and Kelly Pankratz won their age group (8-9 yr) at the Hi-Line Elks National “Hoop Shoot” in Glasgow. They will compete at Glasgow next week for regionals.

Sheepherder Phil Sims, and wife, Darlene, were set up to start marketing his original BBQ sauce, “Philsauce.” He had set up in a cook car, complete with kitchen, commercial sinks, and needed equipment for processing.

With the thermometer sitting at -35 degrees, Glen and Lois Bruckner, of the Harb Community, heard an explosion that involved a fire. A farm truck and tractor were lost resulting in $10,000 damage.

Everyone is invited to a 30th wedding anniversary party for Mr. and Mrs. Ned Mangis. The celebration will be held at their home on Dec. 17th.

National Honor Society members at Malta High School elected Vivian Solberg as president. Falinda Doucette will serve as vice-president, Ruth Johnson was elected secretary, Cathy Page was elected senator to student council, with Charles Johnson as representative.

Advance tickets for the New Year’s Dance are available at the VFW. Louie Stuff Orchestra will provide music.

Back by popular demand at Roger’s Lounge is the roast baron of beef. For $3 a plate, enjoy the evening with friends in a comfortable atmosphere.

Winners at the 66 Ranch Supply “Get Acquainted Day” were Henry Hanson (pr. Belted tires), Will Crasco (battery), George Kirkaldie (pr. recaps), and Albert Steubert (engine heater). Winning stainless pans were Mrs. Ben Swenson, Helen McBride, Annalee Stewart, Stacia Glass and Etta Schlieve.

The Phillips County Hospital Association construction fund now contains $97,174.24 in cash and assets, Treasurer R. G. Monroe said this week. President Fred L. Robinson said the directors decided there would be no formal, countywide solicitation of funds right now

Herman Licht was taken to a Havre hospital last week. Mrs. Leo Green is a patient in a Great Falls Hospital.

A large crowd attended the Farmers Union card party at Four Corners school house. Eighteen tables of whist were in progress. Mrs. Joe Rose took high prize for ladies; Joe Holzhey, high for men; Agnes Barrett, low for ladies, and Donald Green, low for men.

Melvin Wescott is serving a 15-day sentence in the county jail on a bad check charge. He is reported to have written bad checks totaling about $30 at Saco and to have stolen a watch and sold it. According to his own admittance he has been in trouble with the law before.

From the Blue and White Courier: SMART STUDENTS ARE IN M.H.S. Those in the seventh and eighth grades receiving A in arithmetic and science are Nancy Christianson, Dixie Vickhammer, Donald Allery, Margaret Deo, Jim Demarais, Lois Hanson, Kenneth Hanson, Donna Hanson, Carol Jaynes, Loren Moore, Shirley Storbeck and Jim Schumaker.

A $100 fine on a drunk driving charge was paid by David Ohs of Malta in Justice of the Peace Earl Hanson’s court on Monday morning.

Four Malta youths enlisted in the armed forces during the past week, bringing the total enlistments to seven in the past two months. Melvin Davis will serve in the air corps. Ervin Whiteford, John Klotz, and John Deniff will serve in the army.

The worst blizzard in the history of the Great Northern railway had tied up traffic on the main line for 24 hours. The U.S. Reclamation office at Malta recorded 38 below weather and three feet of driving snow. The roads of Lovejoy were so blocked that the auto stage to that point had been abandoned at Freewater where the driver changed to horses.

Amos Kelly had returned from Missouri. While there he purchased a purebred Missouri Jack.

L. C. Edwards was in Washington, D.C., in the interests of water users of the Lower Milk River Valley.

The Odd Fellow Lodge elected A. Elliot as grand noble. James Wilson was elected vice nobel, and Willard Syms was elected secretary.

Mrs. Guthrie was the new noble grand of the Rebekah Lodge with Mrs. G. L. Partridge, vice grand; Mrs. G. W. Clay, secretary, and Mrs. William McLellan, treasurer.

Civic minded citizens were proposing a sidewalk building project for the south side of town.

Rev. Snape of the Methodist Church was crusading against local gambling.
