Middle School Wrestling Season Ends

Thirteen Malta Jr High wrestlers competed in the Glasgow Middle School Invitational on Saturday, December 17. The schools participating were Circle, Wolf Point, Glasgow, Harlem, Malta, Poplar and Sidney. This was the last tournament of the Jr High season.

There were six 5th graders that competed at Glasgow. Braun Sims was 1-2 on the tournament. Braun got 3rd but had a much improved match against a Glasgow opponent where he only lost by decision. Beckett Squires was 2-1 and got 2nd place. Beckett won two matches by pin and decision and lost a match by pin. Cameron Spencer was 2-1 and got 2nd place. Cameron had a great comeback match where he was behind all match and pinned the Circle kid near the end of the match. Braxton Egger was 0-3 and took 4th place. Braxton lost two matches by pin and lost one match by technical fall. Beau Merriman was 1-1 and took 2nd place. Beau lost by pin and won by pin. Beau won the Quick Pin Award for the 3rd week in a row, pinning his opponent in 13 seconds this week. Beau’s previous week’s pins were in 12 and 19 seconds. Kallie LaBrie was 3-1 on the day and took 2nd place. Kallie wins the Most Exciting Match of the Week and Wrestler of the Week for the Glasgow Tournament. Kallie came from behind against a Glasgow opponent and pinned her. This was her first win against the Glasgow girl. Kallie had a much improved match against a Poplar opponent and had two other pins. Kallie’s position and pressure has improved as well as her technique.

Three 6th graders competed at Glasgow on Saturday. Gabe Oshio was 1-2 and received 3rd place. Gabe lost two matches by pin and won one match by major decision. Corby Mears was 0-3 and was 4th place. Corby lost two matches by pin and lost one match by decision. Hayden Roberts was 2-1 and got 2nd place. Hayden lost one match by pin and won two matches by pin and decision.

Two 7th graders competed in the tournament. Steeler Blunt was 1-2 and got 3rd. Steeler lost two matches by pin and won one match by decision. Steeler had a much improved match against a Glasgow opponent that he has never beaten, giving him hope that he will defeat him someday soon. Lane Spencer finished strong with a 3-0 record and 1st place in his weight. Lane had to face his Glasgow opponent for the 7th time this Jr. High season. The Glasgow opponent won the 1st three matches of the season and Lane won the next three matches. In the 7th meeting between the two talented wrestlers, Lane dominated his opponent 12-1 in an exciting match for the fans.

Two 8th graders competed in the tournament. Kenan LaBrie was 3-0 and finished 1st place in dominant fashion. Kenan won by pin in every match and finishes the season as the only undefeated wrestler on the team. Skylar Gilkerson was 3-1 on the day and finished 2nd place. Skylar had three wins by pin and one loss by pin. Coach Trey Simanton who coached Jr High last season, says that Skylar is much improved from last year. Skylar works hard in practice, improving on his technique and it shows on the weekend.

The coaches would like to thank the managers, Courtney Merriman and Sabra Sims, for their hard work that makes our job as coaches easier. We would also like to thank the parents and administration for their support in a successful season.
