A long way to come for a birthday!
Noble Meisdalen had written an article sharing how the Meisdalen name came to the area. This was shared after his cousin Knute, wife Jone, and son Joselin had arrived from Norway. They had used a GPS and drove right up to his home at 226 Pearl Drive, just in time to celebrate Noble’s 91st birthday.
Under watchful eyes
Donald Bradley Lynn was sanctioned by the Montana Board of Outfitters, after being found guilty of illegally guiding hunters on the Ft. Belknap Reservation. He was fined $4,525 in fines and restitution, placed on probation for three years, and was prohibited from guiding on federal lands for two years.
Every day!?
Staff Sergeant Mike Soul of Malta, and Specialist Charles Stephens of Dodson, put up a Christmas tree and put the troops into better spirits while serving their country in Afghanistan. The cook team begins their day at 0430 hours, by cooking three meals a day, seven days a week, and feed over 200 at each meal.
Special night
Courtney Henry and Justin Paul were chosen to reign as king and queen of the annual FCCLA Snowball. The dance was held at the Bistro, following the announcement of the royalty and Grand March at the auditorium.
Mustangs Selected
The roster for the 2013 East-West Shrine game has been released. Malta’s Kaden Bedwell and Tucker Schye will play in the game in Butte on July 20th.
Making a difference
Ryan Flatt was volunteering with others at Hope Haven. They built a simple home for a widowed mother, her children, and grandchildren, during their stay in Antigua, Guatemala.

Local at work…hmm
In one sweep through the north country, burglars made off with an excess of $3,000 in cash, checks, and coins. The home of Mick and Paula Morrison, the North 40 Bar, and Farmer’s Union Oil Station were all targeted.
Setting the standards
Malta’s first lady of real estate, Betty Ulrich, will be retiring Saturday when she turns 80. Friend, Swede Fahlgren said retirement is better than just rusting away.
Gaining good!
A bull, son of EXT, owned by the Hould Angus Ranch of Malta, is third in the average daily weight gain in the Milk River Angus Association test. He is gaining 3.84 pounds per day for the first 56 days.
Changes made
The County Commissioners voted to cut the Co. Superintendent position (currently held by Gary Baden) to part-time and eliminated the position of deputy clerk. The deputy clerk position was held by Sue Kron, and by eliminating the position, would save the county $20, 839.
He has his ideas
A letter to the editor addressed the quandary the school board was in, and what to do with the money from the insurance company. George Eklund stated the board’s idea of “putting it all into escrow” or building a greenhouse was a crock of political-smelling bull crap. One of his suggestions was to replace Supt. Parker.
Conscience came a creeping up
Sheriff Gene Peigneux had in hand, received four large signs that a former Malta resident had returned. He said he had stolen them when he was young, and now, as an adult, he wanted to clear his conscience. The signs included a stop sign, railroad sign, and two intersection signs.

Robert and Susan Twiford, of Helena, have leased the former Mr. Tire shop and opened “Malta Marine.” An avid fisherman, Robert is currently serving as the state president of Walleyes Unlimited.
A bit of a setback
Wrestling Coach Ron Malone got strong performances out of Ty Nelson, Kris LaBrie, and Roy Simanton. Even with good showings, the team lost two duals, losing to Chinook and Glasgow.

Ice vs youth. Ice wins.
Lesley Jane Newton was driving her car on the South Wagner highway when she skidded on the ice, spun around, and went into the ditch backward. There was moderate damage to the car as a result of hitting some trees. Miss Newton was uninjured.
SMILE…you’re on RADAR
Chief of Police Ralph Young was pleased with the departments new radar gun. The mobile unit would be used to assist in controlling speeding.
Stats compiled
There were 58 marriage licenses issued at the Phillips County Clerk of Courts for last year tying the record of 58 recorded last year. Divorces were on the rise with 19 granted. There were 81 new civic actions, 43 probate cases, and passports saw an increase. There were 10 criminal cases last year.
With this ring
Marilyn Dolphay and Roy Taylor were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Malta on Dec. 2nd. Fr. Martin Burke conducted the double ring ceremony.
Date set
Mrs. Warren Lumsden announces the engagement of her daughter, Patricia, to Kenneth Zander of Harlem. A Feb. 18 wedding is planned in Malta.
Christmas fire leaves family homeless
The two-story hotel structure known as Hutton’s in Turner burned to the ground on Christmas day. There were no injuries, but all the contents of the hotel were destroyed. The establishment was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hutton. They lived in the motel with their five children.
Saddle Club Cotter
Bill Cotter was elected President of the Saddle Club at their meeting. Bernie Swenson is the new vice president; Mrs. Leonard Mingneau, secretary; Mrs. Bob Erickson, treasurer; and Marvin Lundman, Dale Driver, and Bob Erickson, directors.
A tradition is carried on
Mrs. Julia Schultz, at 100 years young, was more interested in young Paul Adams than she was in the New Year’s hat that was being presented to her by fireman Tom Boos. Belva Long was on her last shift as the nursing supervisor after a career spanning over 40 years and enjoyed the company of young Adams as well. Visiting the patients of the hospital and nursing home is an annual activity of the firemen.

Tragic wreck claims two
Two Ft. Belknap Indians are dead and three others are injured as a result of an auto accident about 20 miles south of the Agency. Dead are Plaited Hair, a Blood Indian, who had been visiting friends on the Reservation from Cardston, Alta., and Joe Nez Perce of Hays, a well-known cattleman on the reservation. Plaited Hair was killed instantly, an autopsy indicated, and his body was burned almost beyond recognition before it could be removed from the car. Nez Perce died Monday morning at the Ft. Belknap Hospital.
Enlisted
Harry Bishop and William Fanning have enlisted in the regular Army Corps of Engineers, it was announced by M-Sgt. Crawford, local recruiting officer. Donald Goschke enlisted at the Great Falls Air Base for duty as a flight clerk.
Hospital news
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dan McCommon of Wagner on Dec. 25. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Faydo. Deaths include an infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Faydo.
Next in line
It was announced from Washington, D.C. by Sen. Zales Ecton, that Thomas P. Schurr, a Malta student, was named as the Alternate to the U.S. West Point Military Academy.

Clyde Turner of Harlem was shot and killed by Loren Tolbert at a ranch 50 miles north of Harlem as the boys were dueling with “unloaded” guns.
