In her golden years

Sylvia Ohs was bursting with excitement at the celebration of her 100th birthday. Sixty-one immediate members of her family gathered at the Malta Community Church to celebrate with her. Her one concession to her turning 100 is having to give up her driver’s license; which she did – reluctantly, to placate her daughter, Karen Wiederrick.

Close to a spanking

The Malta M-ettes remain undefeated after puttin’ a whoopin’ on the Lady Panthers Friday night, 62-18. The team was led by Jayla Graham and Brenna King, who scored 17 and 12 pts. respectively.

Frustrated

Amid frustrations and challenges – some of them requiring money to fix – were aired at a joint meeting with the Phillips County Ambulance Service, Phillips County Commissioners, and the Phillips County Hospital Board. Each of the three groups agreed to attend each other’s board meetings two to four times a year “just to keep in touch more.”

An area of concern was the hospital’s recent change to “medical assistance facility” (MAF) and a possible misconception by the general public, hospital administrator Larry Putnam said. “We are absolutely not downgrading the facility, but the impression we get from some emergency medical service (EMS) is now you’re just a first-aid station.”

The Bee that doesn’t sting

Second place went to Beth Johnson; third place honor went to Erik Faaborg, and Drew Brewer placed fourth after a tie-breaker was held.

Wagner to Bakersfield

Alvin Gladeau, formerly of Wagner, was nominated by the California Golden State Country Music Association for “Song Writer of 1997.” A song he composed was nominated for Song of the Year, also. He now resides in Bakersfield, CA., “Nashville West” as it is known.

Pay the fine or do the time

Justice of the Peace Gayle Stahl released a list of names who were delinquent on time-pay arrangements with the local court. With a quick copy of a certified copy of the docket page for proof, she can suspend the driver's license of those who are not keeping up with payments and are “just using the court.”
