Mavericks Defeat Frazer, Fall to Lustre, to Face Dodson, Circle

The North Country Mavericks basketball team split games against 3C opponents this past weekend.

The Mavericks fell 78-34 to the Lustre Christian Lions on Friday, January 13, in Saco. They then defeated the Frazer Bearcubs 74-37 on Saturday, January 14.

The North Country Mavericks and Lady Mavericks will take on the Dodson Coyotes and Lady Coyotes in Dodson on Friday, January 20, in Dodson, The event starts with a JV Boys game at 5 p.m. (four-four minute quarters), then the girls varsity game at 6 p.m., and lastly, the boys varsity game at 7:30 p.m.

North Country will then go to Hinsdale to face the Circle Wildcats on Saturday, January 21. The night will serve as Hinsdale’s Senior Night. The event starts at 1:30 p.m.

In North Country’s win over Frazer, Blaine Downing led with 35 points. Kade Strommen had 18 points, Jake Brown had 13 points, and Coy Bowman had eight points.

Though Frazer only fell behind 36-25 by halftime, the Mavericks put the game away in the second half outscoring the Bearcubs 24-5 in the third quarter and 14-7 in the fourth quarter.

“We had some big improvements in our transition offensively,” North Country Head Coach Haakon Fredrickson said. “The guys started to look up the floor and move the ball passing instead of dribbling the whole time. That led to some open buckets right under the rim. Our defense is coming along so we are able to limit open shots down low and on the perimeter.”

The Mavericks fell one night prior to Lustre, a team that is 10-0 and amongst the top teams in Class C.

Downing scored a game-high 24 points, followed by Strommen who scored five points, Jake Brown, who added three points, and Laytin Erickson who scored two points.
