Hey Mom, I got this…

Logan Abrahamson, local Eagle Scout, received recognition at the District Scout Banquet. He received the Heroism Award for his efforts in putting out a gasoline fire on his mother when she was attempting to start a vehicle in cold weather. He is the son of Willie and Jan Abrahamson.

Boots back on US soil

Members of the 484th Military Police Company headquartered in Malta gathered for a photo together after returning from deployment in Afghanistan. They arrived home for demobilization in Fort Bliss, TX.

It was a good run

Local referee, Kelly Murray, retired after 30 years on the court. He ended his career with a few tears and many memories over the three decades.

They know their beef

Four students at Malta Elementary were honored as winners in the essay contest, “Exploration of Beef – WOW What a Cow.” Selected winners were Wyatt Isaacs, Kennedy Koss, Hannah Hanley, and Marisa Sandvick.

Worth the battle

With three overtimes behind them, Malta’s boy’s roundballers Kendall Denham and Zach Handley celebrated the victory with Coach Davie Costin and Assistant Coach Tom Niebur.

Sharp shooters

At the State 4-H Shoot in Bozeman, eight Malta kids won first-place honors. Competing against 400 youth and winning in their age group and division were: Erica Smith (9-10 yr) & Charlee Rhodes (11-12 yr), air rifle-discipline; Erica Smith (9-10 yr) & Nathan Veit (15-18 yr), bow primitive; Kooper Oxarart (9-10 yr) 3D archery; Tanner Smith (11-12 yr), Peyton Meers (13-14 yr) & Nathan Veit (15-19), archery primitive.

Bank recognizes staff

Rhonda DeVries has been promoted to vice president of operations at the First Security Bank; she joined the bank in 1982. Denis Boland, who joined the bank in 1991, was promoted to vice president of lending. The announcement was made by bank President Gary Howell.

Brushing up on their talents

Two local artists will show their work at the 30th Annual C. M. Russell Western Art Show in Great Falls. Returning for their 18th juried art show are Judy Michael of Malta and Ron Haynes of Saco.

Headed for State

The Malta Mustangs enter the Class B State Tournament, their second in three years, as a one-seed and will face Three Forks. Coach Bernie Wasser said, “We’ve accomplished three of our four goals and we’re right on schedule for the fourth.”

School doesn’t have to be boring

Patti Webb, a Malta first-grade teacher, has been awarded the Ag in Montana Schools Award of Excellence. Some of her activities included bread baking, butter making, a unit on rodeo animals and their care, and trips to a local ranch to view the operation.

Honker on a hooker

Glenn Flatt speared a 41.5-inch Northern Pike at Nelson Reservoir. The fish weighed in at 25 pounds.

Young & upcoming

Coach Jeff Hould and the Malta JOM Team of Shawn Carnahan, Cole Peterson, Dylan Bergos, Jake Hould, Lennie Cebulski, Nicole Salsbery, Jessica Webb, and Randi Johnson lost in overtime to the Hi-Line Hoopsters. Shawn was named to the all-star team and Nicole was MVP for girls.

On the Registry

The Saco Mercantile is among some recent additions to the National Register of Historic Places. The building was constructed in 1907.

Dern it…

It was a weekend of frustration for Saco as the Panthers were eliminated from postseason play in the Eastern C Divisional Tournament in Sidney. They suffered a 58-54 loss to Medicine Lake.

Starr still shining

Curtis Starr (quite young, sporting a mustache) was pictured in the weekly PCN with birthday wishes in a poem. Speculation was he was in his 50’s, however, the staff preferred to keep their jobs so the mystery was undisclosed.

Takin’ it down…

Captain and floor general of the Mustang squad, Jim Molloy, the only seasoned veteran on the young Mustang team, was hoisted by teammates to claim the net that traditionally goes to the championship team. It may be the last net claimed by the Mustangs from the NMC as they move up to Class A next year and it is doubtful if the divisional will be held in Havre.

Young leader competes

Gail Blunt recently won the American Legion oratorical contest in both the local and district levels and went to the zone meet in Conrad where she placed second. Bob Jacobs, commander of the Malta American Legion Post, accompanied her to Conrad.

Big trucks coming

The Howe Company was the low bid for a truck with an 800-gallon tank installed and delivered to the City for $19,257. Plaza Ford will furnish a 1973 tilt cab diesel-powered truck chassis for $10,721.21.

Neighbor helping neighbor

Al Minugh, a Dodson rancher, was featured in the Seattle Times. He was recovering from a fall from a television tower while he was ascending the 470-foot tower to remove Christmas lights, having shattered both heels. His hired man had quit last month, leaving his wife and three teenage children to care for 400 head of cattle. The article told about neighbors pitching in to help at the ranch.

Been there, done that

Having confetti on hand is “old hat” to the Mustang cheering section as they exploded with elation in the closing moments of the district tournament championship game in which the Malta Mustangs defeated the Big Sandy Pioneers. It was the fourth consecutive district championship for the defending state champions.

The Eagle that doesn’t fly

The Eagle Scout badge was presented to Bill Losleben at an impressive ceremony on Saturday. Four Eagle Scouts, Glenn Mueller, Maurice Funk, Leslie Eskildsen, and Leonard Anderson took part in the ceremony.

Tragedy is over

Funeral rites for Ole F. Jeglum, 67, were held at the Malta Lutheran Church on Saturday afternoon. He is survived by his widow. Pall bearers were Ben Vanderhoff, Herman Krumweide, B. I. Anderson, William Driver, Emil Lundstrom and Christ Ode.

Desperate measures

“I would kiss a dog if I knew he was from Montana”, writes Dudley Jones to Senator Fred L. Robinson from San Jose, CA, where the Dodson man has been spending three months in a hospital. Gaining weight he says, and making it so tough for the doctors that they are about to turn him loose!

Top-notch students

A perfect score in every world history test, including the six-week test, has been received by Delores Hartman in the past six-weeks period. In the final test, Roger Green was second highest with a 98. Placing third with 96 was Evert Bruckner.

It was a good year

The Dodson basketball team and coach will be the honored guests at a steak dinner at the Coffee Cup Café dining room Thursday evening by Steve Holman. About 20 are expected to attend.

Ray Reed, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Reed of Malta, died in a Minneapolis hospital from wounds received in WWl.

R. Lee Feigel, pioneer Saco resident, died at his home.

Alex Doney of the Larb Hills was dead.

Jack Davis had committed suicide at a wood camp on Lodge Pole Creek in the mountains.

Searching

Charles Ricker had resigned as constable at Zortman. A petition was being circulated asking for the appointment of D. L. Baird.

Messrs. Mead and Cowan, Cottonwood ranchers, reported farmers were getting ready for spring work.

A nine-pound boy had arrived at the Adolph LaFond ranch home west of town.

Wooly woolies

Buckley and Collins purchased a band of 3,000 ewes from George Jones. They paid $4.50 per head.

Hang on…here comes a corner..!

The Enterprise was informed that Harry Cosner was planning the establishment of an automobile line between Malta and Zortman. A large automobile carrying eight passengers and express would make the 55-mile trip and return in one day, it was believed.
