Members of the community gathered and carried a large wooden cross to the Kirkwood Chapel in observance of Easter observance. The Ministerial Association held a Good Friday service later.

Buffalo from Ft. Belknap wandered approximately 30 miles east onto the property of Larry Smith and Richard Gilmore. The sheriff’s office estimated 150 buffalo; the Ft. Belknap Fish, Wildlife, and Parks agency assured the landowners the buffalo were insured, and all property damages would be taken care of.

Joyce Wright entered the Harlem Seed Show and won 2nd place in the Death by Chocolate entry. Fellow Red Hatters Bonnie Marney and Jean Pewitt accompanied her and served Joyce’s famous almond roca.

The 14th Annual Swishfest was opening and 79 teams were onboard to compete. According to Katie Skiff, organizer of the event, the teams are coming from Great Falls, Scobey, and towns across the state.

Dan and Lori Lundstrom were blessed with twin granddaughters, Aubrey and Bailey. Their parents are Eric and Paula Highlander of Great Falls.

Winners in the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International announced the winners of the 22nd annual creative writing contest. Grades K-2 winners were Abby Yeska, Kendra Cummings, Teagen Erickson; Gr. 3-4 Loden Idler, Melony Messerly, and Morgan Johnson. Winning Gr. 5-6 were Carrieann Hofer, Anna Wright, and Emilie Carrillo. Winning for Gr. 7-8 was Kari Koss.

Lee Carpenter said he got a letter from the county and had 11 days “to come up with the bucks or they were going to sell me out.” He brought a wheelbarrow with 45,000 pennies and other change to make up the entire $593.97 due to the County Treasurer for full delinquent payment.

Dave Murphy was honored with the “Top Hand Red Bandana” award at the Wagon Train Feed at the VFW.

Girls State delegates from Malta are Katie Veseth and Jami Brogan; alternates are Cheryl Kaasa and Julie Blunt.

Saco resident Wayne Stahl tossed his hat into the ring for the House of Representatives for District 95 as a Republican. The primary election would determine the winner as Ernest Bergsagel (incumbent) who had filed for re-election on the Republican ticket.

Gary and Beth Casebolt were the second claim to be filed in District Court against Dr. Roger Baxter in Chinook for negligence. A similar case was filed earlier in the month by Gerry and Lorri Williams of Landusky.

Malta AAU wrestlers who competed in the State AAU Championship last weekend were Scott Moore (runner-up); Wayne French (4th), Matt Sims (5th) Luke Spencer (runner-up), Skippy Sims (6th), and Lance Haser (4th).

The upcoming marriage of Dara Cline and Eric Wilke was announced with plans for an August wedding in Havre.

Jami Brogan, Sarah Faaborg, Melinda Wilson, Katie Veseth, Cheryl Kaasa, and Erika Hanson won awards at the District Key Club Convention in Billings.

Mayor Duke Seek is seeking re-election and running unopposed. Candidates for two positions for Ward 1 aldermen are William “Bill” Cotter, Jerry Hanson, and James Parker. Filing for Ward 2 are Garry Adams, Carl Eaton, and Elmer Fiegel. Candidates for police judge are W. R. “Ray” Henneman (incumbent) and Dr. W. J. Meyett.

Bair’s Truckstop was advertising gas at 34.9 cents a gallon.

Mr. and Mrs. Sid Hould attended the Western Region 4-H Leader Forum in Albuquerque, NM, along with 16 others Montanans.

Construction is set to begin on the new G.N. steak house, lounge, coffee shop, and motel. The complex will have 30 units and seating accommodations by the windows.

The Phillips County Airport Commission met and unanimously decided that the lease with Mendel Flying Service to operate the airport will continue until its expiration date. A petition had been submitted to the commission to terminate the contract, which has another five years remaining.

Ted Kelly filed his nomination petition as a candidate for school board trustee of Malta. This brings the total to three candidates, as incumbents Rev. Joel Nelson and Bob Anderson had filed previously.

Mr. and Mrs. Otis Erdahl announced the engagement of their daughter, MaryLou, to William Schwartz. A July wedding is planned.

Students Call Off Strike

Malta High School students who staged a strike and street demonstration here last Thursday have agreed to return to school after the current Easter vacation, said Norman Storbeck yesterday. The school board president announced that a conference with student representatives had affirmed the board’s stand that nothing could be done until its authority was re-established.

The student-signed petition demanding the immediate removal of Superintendent J. H. Lesselyong and Coach B. W. Lodge will be disregarded, Storbeck continued, and a list of lesser grievances presented by the students will be considered at a board meeting at the city hall tonight. A representative group of students will be present, and the faculty will be represented by John Mikesell, the high school principal.

Dodson Ranks Fourth in State Tourney

The Dodson Coyotes returned home Sunday with fourth place in the Class B State Tournament held last weekend at Laurel. Although Dodson ranked fourth in the final outcome, the Coyotes have the distinction of upsetting all the dopesters in the state and of having won the hearts of tournament fans with their plucky spirit and their defeats of teams representing much larger schools.

Eagles Initiate at Regular Wednesday Meeting

Three members were initiated into the Malta Aerie of the Eagles Lodge at the Wednesday night meeting. Visitors included Earl W. Hoffman and Foran E. Higgens of Havre, and Paul Ness and Herb Friede of the Chinook Lodge.

Another visitor was Thomas L. Dewar of Zortman who was worthy president of Aerie No. 1687 of Zortman from 1907 through 1908. The Aerie was dissolved in 1912. Lyle Freeman spread the charter for the above lodge and still has the old receipts, it was stated at the meeting.

Fire at City Dump

Fire starting from burning trash at the city dump south of town jumped the road and burned a strip of grassland about half a mile wide and a mile long Sunday afternoon. Members of the fire department answered the call and part of them went to fight the fire, others remaining in the city. The fire was outside the city limits.

Skinner Case Opens District Court Term

The case of the State of Montana vs. Dwight Skinner will come up for trial in district court Monday, March 29, the first case on the docket for the spring term. The case involves the illegal possession of a beef hide. Judge R. M. Hattersley of Conrad will preside over the court session. Attorneys in the case are County Attorney Fred C. Gabriel for the plaintiff and James T. Harrison for the defendant.

Cummings Unearths Old Tax Receipts

Digging through old family papers recently, N. J. Cummings brought to light some interesting receipts issued in December of 1865 and August of 1866.

The two papers are receipts for taxes paid in the second district of Illinois and list sums of $3.45 and $2.50 as paid on income. The receipts were issued to Henry Stuart, a great-great uncle of Mr. Cummings.
