‘Macbeth Goes Hollywood’ at Malta High
Shakespeare’s tragedy takes on a modern, confused, comical turn when his agent options his script to a Hollywood producer who wants a “few” changes to make the play more contemporary, according to director Anna LaBrie.
Student actors include agent, Bayleigh Bruckner, producer Garrett Giblette; Shakespeare, Justin Paul; witness, Adrianna Bibeau, Courtney Henry, and Amanda Mummey; Macbeth Anthony Rappold; Stagehand Ashleigh Stiers; Banquo Palmer Giblette; Lady Macbeth Johanna Nagy; Macduff Carter Epperson, and extras Keyanna Gearheart, Andrew Bruere, Riley Abrahamson, Angel Salveson, and Joshua Carrillo. Emee Doucette is the stage manager for the play.
VanWichen Boys lead Malta to meet Victory
The Malta Mustang golf squad took first at the MHS Invitational golf meet last Friday. The Mustangs took the team win with a score of 373, followed by Chinook at 385.
The individual score was won by Chinook’s Scott Schmitt, second and third were taken by the VanWichen brothers. Freshman Keenan and senior Spencer were tied with 86 apiece. The chip-off was won by Keenan, the younger of the two, giving him second and Spencer third. Junior Garrett Zanto placed 7th in individual scores.
Children’s Author at Grade School
National award-winning children’s author and parenting expert Julia Cook, MS, is speaking to children and teachers at Malta Elementary School. Cook’s books have dealt with a variety of tough issues that children are faced with today-bullying, anxiety, anger management, divorce, and the list goes on. Her recent releases include Cell Phoney, dealing with cell phone addiction and etiquette, and Smarter than the Scoopers, which teaches kids to be safe from predators in a non-threatening way.
Swishfest Brings in a Crowd
The annual Malta Swishfest attracted a few hundred young athletes this year.
Fourth, Fifth-grade Students get Bringing Up Grades nod
Malta Kiwanis Club recently honored students at Malta Elementary School in their Bringing Up Grades (B.U.G.) program.
Fifth-grade students honored with B.U.G. certificates were: Ryder Anderson, Kaycee Bond, Kelbee Denham, Jacob French, and Jillian O’Brien from Mrs. Buechler’s room, and Kaylanna Bain, Blake Chambers, Keith Epperson, Carly Garfield, Bonnie Jones, Jordan Markuson, Hunter Misildine, Georgia Orahood, Andrew Walling, and Macy Williamson from Mrs. Carney’s room.
Fourth-grade students honored as B.U.G. recipients were: Colt French, Korin Longknife, Danie Rhodes, and Erica Smith from Mrs. Dusek’s room and Lauren Doney, Anabelle Giblette, Sidney Meeks, Pierce Mortenson, and Brett Wiebe from Mrs. Henry’s room.
Each of these students received a frameable certificate signed by Kiwanis President, Mary Brady, and a coupon for a free fruit smoothie at Three Sisters.

National Library Week is April 19-25 and in honor of this your Phillips County Library is once again offering “no fines.”

Saco BPA students Texas Bound
Top students from Saco High School are taking aim toward fulfilling careers in business and will be attending the Business Professionals of America (BPA) 1998 National Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Texas, on April 29-May 3.
Saco chapter members Mollie Forbes, Miranda Yeska, Brooke Beadle, Erica DePuydt, Katy Forbes, Kelly Marshall, Scott Bryson, Trista Marshall, and Erin Beadle will join over 4,000 other conference delegates from across the nation to participate in a national-level business skill competitions, workshops, general sessions, a one-day trip to Mexico and a fun-filled evening at Special Event/Six Flags Fiesta Texas.
Kirk Stiles Signs to play with Carroll
Malta basketball standout Kirk Stiles has signed to play with the Carroll College Saints, according to head men’s basketball coach Gary Turcott.
The 6’3”, 175-pound guard averaged 20 points per game, six rebounds and three assists for the Class B State Champion Malta Mustangs this year.
“Kirk combines outstanding athletic ability and basketball skills with a proven background of playing on championship teams,” Turcott said.
Murdock shares Peace Corp experiences
Jeff Douglas-Murdock, son of James and Patricia Murdock of Whitewater, recently spent two weeks helping his parents on their farm and ranch after having endured a four-month adventure in the Sahara Desert at the invitation of the United States Peace Corps.
He has been involved with the Peace Corps since he joined the organization in 1982 as a volunteer advising Young Farmers Clubs (similar to 4-H) in Lesotho, a small mountain kingdom enclave surrounded by the Republic of South Africa, in the days when apartheid (legalized racial discrimination) was practiced.

Student Exchange
The 17th annual Kiwanis exchange program begins next Monday involving students from Malta High School and Swift Current Comprehensive High School in Swift Current, Sask. Going to Swift Current are Cindy Wiprud, Margie McKoy, Chip Young, and Mike Haugen. Host students will be Brenda Nordlund, Butch Larcombe, Doug Goodheart, and Carol Flansaas,
Students from Swift Current who will spend from April 23-27 as students at MHS are Carol Penman, Kevin Satter, Greg Heinrichs, and April Baumann.
Bowlers at State Tourney
The men’s state bowling tournament is being conducted in Missoula and two Malta teams participated.
Keith Stine, Jerry Knoll, Bud Bradley, Jim Hicks, and Dr. Ed Cerkovnik of the Pastime Bar team, and from the Stine’s Nite Club team were Dr. Dan Molloy, Bud Yates, Don Watts, Merle Gunsch, and Dwayne Raymond. Mrs. Molloy and Mrs. Gunsch accompanied their husbands to Missoula.

Former Malta Man Drowns at Tacoma
The body of Harold P. Schumacher, who drowned while on a fishing trip at Tacoma, Wash., early Sunday morning, was returned to Malta this week for burial. Burial will be in the Malta cemetery with military rites accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Malta post of the American Legion.
Schumacher was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Schumacher of Malta and brothers Lee of Malta, Ray of Renton, WA, and Don of Dayton, ID.
Winning Posters Selected at Auxiliary Meeting
Judging of the poppy posters and awards of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes was a feature of Monday evening’s meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary. Winners were first, Fred Messerley, a fourth grader; second, Marilyn Fortin, a fifth grader; and third, Dwaine Head, a sixth grader.

Four big trucks loaded with drilling equipment arrived in Malta on their way to Landusky where the Ohio company was planning to drill for oil.
Twenty-one pupils were enrolled in the Harb school.
