Distinguished Young Woman

Tessa Lulloff, a junior at Malta High School, was crowned 2014 Distinguished Young Woman at the annual scholarship program held Saturday night in the school auditorium. She will receive a $350 scholarship. Lulloff also won the talent, interview, and self-expression portions of the program and will receive $100 scholarships for each. Avery Wiese was the runner-up and will receive a $200 scholarship. She also won the Be Your Best Self award and a $100 scholarship. The scholarship is given to the girl who best exemplifies the motto of the program. Meghan Johnson won the scholastic portion of the contest and a $100 scholarship. Raven Bear won the spirit award voted on by the contestants themselves and the fitness award and will receive a $100 scholarship for each. Lulloff is the 52nd young woman to be crowned in the local program which began in 1963 and was known then as the Phillips County Junior Miss pageant.

Holman, Brookie earn Phillips County Motor Sports scholarships

Phillips County Motor Sports has announced its 2013 scholarships winners-four in all. President Greg Kirkwood announced that Cordell Holman, son of Mark and Ronna Holman, and Dalton Brookie, son of Russ and Della Brookie, are both recipients of the $500 scholarships. Both are seniors at Malta High School.

Tim Hasler – your friendly neighborhood garbage man

Tim Hasler of Malta has been honored as the happiest municipal garbage truck driver in Montana. Not really.

But if there were such an award, Hasler, who operates the City of Malta's garbage truck, would be a shoo-in. Hasler, who has worked for the city for 31 years and started working on the garbage crew part-time in 1980, back in the days when crews emptied garbage cans into the garbage truck by hand, smiles, and waves to passersby from his driver's perch on the curb side of the cab of his Freightliner garbage truck.

Cub Scouts see calf born

The Tiger and Webelo Cub Scouts of Pack 432 toured the Phillips County Vet Clinic as a Go See It project. Veterinarians Dallas and Patty Maxwell, with assistant Greg Peterson, showed the Cubs around the clinic. During the tour, word was received that a rancher was bringing a cow in who was having trouble calving. A Cub inquired if they could watch the calf being born. Permission was given and all parents agreed their Cubs could watch this earth-shaking event.

New Airport to Open May 15

Phillips County's new airport is scheduled to open officially on May 15, according to Lee Robinson, Airport Authority chairman.

That's the day the large "X" on the new runway which signals pilots the runway is not open will be removed and transferred to the runway at the old airport south of Malta.

Bronze sale raises $4,680 for MHS scholarship fund

The Mustang Foundation successfully raised $4,680 from bronze sales from Feb. 22 until April 15. Two MHS seniors and one alumnus will receive the scholarship each year pending available scholarship funds.

New Business in Malta

Dan Sisco, Malta Chamber president, and Chamber members Bob Galt, Sonia Young, and Jeanne Barnard, congratulate Bob Twiford at the Grand Opening of his new business, Malta Marine.

Brown gets science award from USAA

The United States Achievement Academy has announced that Jesse Brown of Malta has been named a U. S. National Award Winner in Science. This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. Brown, who attends Malta High School, was nominated for the award by Mardy Demarais, a science teacher at the school.

Tony Roberts gets music award

Merle "Tony" Roberts has been given the 1998 Outstanding Musician Award at Montana State University-Billings. Roberts graduated this past weekend with a degree in music. He is the son of John and Janice Roberts of Malta.

70th Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Paul LaBrie of the South Wagner community were honored Sunday, April 29, at a special mass and reception in honor of their 70th wedding anniversary. Rev. Martin J. Burke conducted the mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church and a reception followed in the church social rooms.

Arbor Day Project

Members of the Malta Woman's Club, Mrs. Ken Cox, Mrs. Jim Farstad, Mrs. Dale Edmister, Mrs. Viola Bergan, and Mrs. Jim McKoy, participated in planting two flowering crab trees in the city park last Monday as part of their community improvement project and commemoration of Arbor Day.

4-H Demonstration Winners

The winners for the county 4-H Demonstration Day held last Saturday at the high school were Terri Kelly, first in the junior division in agricultural demonstrations; Tami Bergtoll, third, junior division, home economics; Linda Jacobson, tied for first, junior division, home economics; Kathleen Koss, third, senior division, miscellaneous; Bonnie Koss, first, junior division, miscellaneous; Joyce Jacobs, second, junior division, home economics; Terri Jo French, tied for first, junior division, home economics; Lynne Orahood, second, junior division, agricultural; Diana Robinson, first, senior division, agricultural; Ross Simser, third, junior division, agricultural, and Bobby Math, third, junior division, miscellaneous; Carol Flansaas, first, speech contest; Gail Blunt and Dee Lynn Cowan, first and second respectively in the senior division, miscellaneous; and Rita Crowley, second, junior division, miscellaneous.

Underpass Job at Malta Scheduled

Bids on the construction of the underpass in Malta have been tentatively set for opening at Helena on June 15, according to an announcement made by members of the highway commission this week. The Malta job is one of 13 road and bridge-building jobs scheduled.

A barn at the H. G. Robinson home on the north side was destroyed by fire. The loss included the Robinson car, a saddle horse owned by George Robinson, and a couple of saddles and other gear.

Dr. E. V. Cabbage, who had been sued for $15,000 in damages in a breach of promise suit, settled the matter by giving the plaintiff, Miss Jeannie Hollensbeck, a Ford car.

The editor of the Enterprise pointed out that Montana law made it a misdemeanor to brand stock with a running iron. Owners must brand stock with a regularly built branding iron.

The Enterprise was completing its sixth year of publishing a weekly newspaper.
