Cars will be the word this weekend, as the 11th Annual First State Bank Car Show and the Phillips County Motor Sports converge on the town. Those sitting at the Bank show area will get far less dust than those at the racetracks.

Flooding between the DY Junction and Bohemian Corner on Hwy 191 has resulted in the road being closed. It was closed due to 12 inches of water flowing over the highway due to heavy runoff from recent rains.

Kendall Denham will represent Montana in the Montana-Wyoming All-Star Games at Sheridan College in Wyoming and at Rocky Mountain College in Billings.

Tucker Schye will play in the annual Knights of Columbus Badlands Bowl. Played against North Dakota, the game offers a trophy and bragging rights that come with the victory.

Be on the lookout for a flurry of ducks hitting the canal water as the Rubber Duckie Race begins in conjunction with the Car Show. Racing from the golf course, the finish line is at the canal across Hwy 191. Prize money of $600 will be up for grabs.

Four locals will compete with three others from around the state for the KMMR local Texaco Showdown. Performing will be Amber Harms, Justin Paul, Eva Harms, and Vince Mace. The state Showdown will be held in Great Falls.

Jeremy Otteson was recently awarded a Presidential Scholarship at Carroll College. The scholarships are awarded to students who have earned a high school grade average of at least 3.25, and also on extracurricular activities and ACT/SAT scores.

U.S. Senator Max Baucus announced the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded a $145,000 grant to the Fort Belknap Indian Community to investigate the environmental consequences of removing rock from Snake Butte to build Fort Peck Dam.

Kent Williams, County Extension Agent, will be leaving to take over the extension agent duties in Miles City for Custer County. Because of budget cuts at the state and local level advertisement for the position will begin in September or October.

Leta Reiter was among the recent graduating class at the University of Great Falls, the largest class in UGF’s history. The daughter of the late Victor and Louise Nordlund of Dodson, she earned a Master of Education degree.

Craftsman Norm Haugness, to avoid boredom when he retired, built three looms and a spinning wheel. He traveled the hi-line giving demonstrations and talks about the long-lost art of spinning wool.

Four baby raccoons were in the caring hands of Jean Shippen when they were found orphaned after a fire. She was bottle-feeding them every four hours and when able to survive on their own, would be released on their own.

The Malta M’ettes were celebrating after winning the Class B Track Championship in Missoula. The team went from three points to 41 in less than 90 minutes. The relay team of Kim Wiederrick, Cheryl Keller, Mariah Guilfoyle, and LeeAnn Pekovitch won the 400-meter relay in a downpour to seal the victory.

Senior Joe Cartwright of Whitewater claimed three metals at the state Class C Track Meet in Missoula. He claimed a gold medal in the grueling 400-meter dash, along with a third and fourth place in his other events.

Thur. May 31, 1978

The Spring Horse Show of the Milk River Horse Association went on at 1:30 Sunday afternoon, despite having been called off due to rain. A number of exhibitors showed up not knowing it had been cancelled. Halter classes were held in the afternoon. Winners were: quarter horses-Doug Heger (1) and Tom Simanton (2); gelding-Jan McCuin (1) and Twila Olson (2); showmanship-Diana Robinson (1), and Barbara Robinson (2).

Twenty-two miles south of Malta a cow ran across the road in front of Gerald Slade and was killed; the cow was owned by Roy Spencer. Vern Peterson was the owner of a cow killed when hit by Joseph Hould at about 12:05 Monday morning. A third accident over the weekend involved a car driven by Lee Benzinger being rear-ended by Kelly Murray. No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.

Jim Tavary, son of Mr. and Mrs. Art Tavary who have owned and operated the Malta Nursing home for the past seven years, took over the management of the home this week. Tavary said he is planning a 14-bed addition and a recreation room, with construction to start this summer.

Billy Cox, Billings Gazette newsboy, lost his Sunday earnings of $4.75 when someone sawed the lock off the vending machine in front of the post office. The vandalism/theft occurred Sunday night or early Monday evening.

Deborah Jones of Hinsdale became the bride of Ron Sjostrom in a ceremony at the Methodist Church on May 12. After a honeymoon in Yellowstone Park the couple will be engaged in the farming/ranching business.

Ralpha Smith of Malta and Duane Smith of Helena announce the engagement of their daughter, Carla, to Charles Coffers of Elko, NV. An August 11 wedding is planned.

In a church decorated with bronze and yellow mums, orange glads and carnations, Judy Blunt became the bride of John R. Matovitch. They will make their home at the Loving U Ranch south of Malta.

Thur. June 3, 1948

Funeral services were held for Patrick Kirwan, a rancher from the south part of the county. According to Coroner Willford Bell, Kirwan apparently had roped a calf, jaw-marked it, and released it. As he stepped back from the calf, he stepped into the loop of his lariat. In some manner the horse became frightened and bolted, Kirwan was dragged about five miles over the prairie. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle (Mikkelson), and daughters, Maureen (11), and Kathleen (7).

Miss Doris McPhee and James Jerome Johnson were married Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Bruce Garlinghouse was promoted to superintendent of the Milk River Irrigation Project at Malta. He replaced Harold Genger who was transferred to Great Falls.

Henry Holmes has been appointed deputy sheriff for Zortman and Landusky by Sheriff Frank Partridge. He will replace Eric Thorsen who retired.

Miss Margaret Cruikshank was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Mrs. Ada Anderson for the position of county superintendent of schools. She recently completed her second year of teaching at the Saco High School.

Wild cow milking to bronc busting is scheduled at the Bar 2N Rodeo four miles west of Malta Sunday afternoon. The fast and good rodeo will have bronc riding, bulldogging, calf roping and bareback riding. Local talent will include western and cowboy songs by Fern Oxarart and Marjory Orahood. Local boys conceded to be among the top Montana riders will be Ike Blatter, Sonny Oxarart, and Don Slade.

The Little Rockies Mercantile company store was completely destroyed by fire. “A mysterious rider galloped into camp about 1 a.m. He rode as far as the store and returned in about 10 minutes. Although several people saw him, he spoke to no one, returning the way he came at a fast gallop.”

Burning of stubble to rid the county of grasshoppers was recommended as a way of fighting the pests.

Tommy Gibbons, a contender for Jack Dempsey’s title at Shelby on July 4, passed through Malta on his way to Shelby. Many people gathered at the gas station to greet him.

Mr. and Mrs. George E. Cummings were in town from Regina. Mrs. Cummings was suffering from blood poisoning.

The mines at Zortman had contributed $19,430 to the gold receipts at the state assay offices for the month of May. As a result, Choteau County, Zortman was located, ranked fourth highest in the state for the period.

The Union Sabbath School festival was to be an event of the week. Strawberries and whipped cream were to be served for 20 cents, ice cream for 15 cents and lemonade for 5 cents.
