Councilperson Bonnie Wiederrick would be challenged for election in the upcoming election by Alice Hofer who filed before the 5 pm deadline. Mayor Shyla Jones and Ward 1 Alderman David Rummel were running unopposed.

The Dodson Mayor election turned into a three-way race, with Randy Dolphay, Theresa Cole and Al Minugh having filed for the office. Two four-year council positions are open and Caleb Best, Deserae KillEagle and William “Bean” Simanton have tossed their name into the hat.

City landfill operator, Bob Kapp, was a popular fellow at the city dumps as his special machine crushed the contents of city residents’ waste, making it a seagull smorgasbord delight.

Boy Scout Pack 432 sent eight troops to Rudyard for the Cub Scout Day Camp. Attending were Dre Oshio, Elijah Hawes, Colton Bailey, Hunter Missledine, Marcus Knudsen, Brant Bailey, and Draven Lageson.

Travis Anderson took first at the opening racing season at the AMX Speedway. Also competing were George Anderson, Seth Hamilton, Scott Hould, Frank Kindle and Troy Manoukian.

Author Orvin Solberg had penned a book titled, “My Buckle,” which is a story about Johnny Daniell, who lives north of Malta. It is the story about the hurdles and hardships in life and lifting others up.

The City of Malta has stopped issuing free swim passes to underprivileged youngsters, according to City Clerk-Treasurer Carolyn Schmoeckel. She told the council recently that it is getting to the point that there are more free swimmers than paid swimmers. “We all know the pool loses money,” she said.

In the upcoming election on Saco, the only candidate filing for the council is Gayle Hammond, the incumbent.

A truck, tractor pull will replace the demo derby at the Phillips Co. Fair this year. This will include professional pullers, 13 mini tractors, four 4x4 mods, and four diesel pickups among others!

Katie Veseth was selected to serve as intern for Sen. Conrad Burns in Washington, DC in July. She became interested in government after attending Girls’ State.

Making the Dean’s List at University of Montana at Missoula were Irene Galano, Sue LaBrie, Janelle Lamb, and Erik Schumacher.

Retiring City employee Lonnie Peacher was honored at a reception on his final day of work. He had worked for the City for 20 years.

Keenan Blunt received a $1,000 scholarship from Farm Credit Services; Kim Wiederrick also received a scholarship.

Robert and Betty Plouffe of Saco had received funds from an economic development fund through PhillCo. The funds would be used to expand their business, Pay & Save in Saco, to meet inspection requirements of state and federal regulators

Ted Sintler was added as an assistant vice president in the ag and commercial loan department of the Conrad office of the Farmers State Bank of Montana. He is the son of Jim and Leila Sintler of Malta.

Finishing second place at the Big Sky Games at the Havre regionals were Tanner Anderson, Chris McMullen, Kurt Reichelt, Buckshot Nelson, Bryan Simanton and Dusty LaRoach.

Vandals broke windows at two businesses; and at the elementary school, they broke a window and gained access to the building. No estimate for damage costs was available on the window or the pop machine which was damaged by pry bars.

June 28, 1973

Fr. Martin Burke was being transferred to St. Peter and Paul parish in Great Falls. His successor will be Fr. Patrick Donovan; he will take a two-week vacation to Ireland prior to starting duties at his newly assigned parish.

There were six accidents over the weekend, one involving the hospitalization of a local. Jean Green was admitted to the hospital Saturday evening after his car rolled. He was treated for bruises and a bump on his head and released Monday morning.

Airman David Daellenbach has been assigned to Lowry AFB, Colo., after completing Air Force basic training. He is a 1969 graduate of Malta.

Jim Ed Brown, country western singer, will be the night show at the Phillips County Fair this year.

The children of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Kienenberger of Dodson gathered from far and near to honor their father on his 80th birthday. Their 11 children gathered were: Dorothy Lumsden, Betty Lou Opland, Sharon Baker, Virginia Eskildsen, Hugh, Bud, Bruce, Charles, Dean, Douglas and Ted.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Lang were honored by their children on their 25th wedding anniversary. Rita Maloney and Jack Lang were married on June 21, 1948, in Malta.

Rhonda Whiting and Tom Lankford were united in marriage at St. Francis Xavier Catholic in Missoula. Jerry Lankford of Dodson was the best man, and flower girls were Cheryl and Bridgett Lankford, all of Dodson.

Friends and family are invited to a reception for Gordon and Ruby (Blatter) Aycock who were married on June 18th in Reno. Join us at the Blatter Ranch 1:30-4 p.m. Sunday.

July 1, 1948

Alyce Wagner, of Fort Peck, and Thomas Taylor of Malta were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Malta at 8 o’clock. Rev. Fr. Crowley conducted the ceremony.

Nels Watney, who has operated an auto repair shop in Malta for many years, sold his business to the Malta Mercantile Company. Paul Jacobson will take over the management of the business.

Sgt. Martin Renne of Dodson, who joined the Air Force in Sept. 1940, is currently serving as aircraft clerk in the operations section of the Headquarters, 314th Composite Wing, near Tokyo, Japan. Renne has had the unusual experience of making promotions every six months since his entry into the service.

There is a July 4th Concert at the Malta City Hall. Music will be furnished by the Swift Current Boys Band. Music will start at 7:30 P. M., the cost of admission is fifty cents for adults and 25 cents for children.

Reynold Jones, who was living on the old Long X ranch on the Missouri River reported the water was standing six feet deep in the house.

A destructive hail storm took a heavy toll on crops in the Content country. The heaviest losers were H. Westman, Lars Olson, Ole Solberg, Ole Lee, Karl Kjos and H. Kvale.

The Palace Theatre in Malta was sold to Mrs. Matilda Veseth and her son, Carl, by John Survant. Carl was to take over management.

Mrs. Ole Formo died at home in Malta after a short illness.

Lightning struck the Fred St. Hill residence and damaged it considerably. No one was injured.

H. G. Cowan had announced that a grove of walnut trees he had planted from seed had withstood the winter and was making good growth.

C.L. Armstrong and Mrs. Martha Goggins, both of the Larb Hills country, were married in Malta by Rev. Snape.

A water rights suit had been started by H. H. Hedges and 25 others against D. W. Bateman and 36 defendants involving the waters of Beaver Creek.

Bertha Hardy had leased the upper story of the Cowan Hotel building and planned to open a hospital. She was the registered nurse.
