The Phillips County Fair had ten cars and three new drivers show up for the AMX races. Local winners were Luke Brown (B Main, first place), Robert Kindle (B Main, second); George Anderson (A Main, second); and Scott Hould (Hard Luck).

Bidders spent $113,851 in the livestock sale at the Phillips County Fair; $5,366 went to various charities, including nine-year-old Victoria Kirby, who was injured in an auto accident on July 2.

The “Music Man” opened at the Fort Peck Theatre.

Tessa Luloff traveled to Cut Bank to participate in the Distinguished Young Woman of the Year, representing Phillips County.

Tucker Schye earned Defensive MVP honors for his second All-Star game this summer in the East-West Shrine Game played in Butte on Saturday.

Bud and Rhoda Johnson would celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary at a reception in their honor at the Lutheran Church on Saturday the 28th, from 4-6 p.m.

Justine Knudsen, an eight-year-member of the Malta Steak Club earned the right to attend National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, GA.

The Big Flat Electric Cooperative team of Darren Demarais, Ross Hasler and Bob Johnson took second place at the 7th Annual Lineman’s Rodeo. They missed taking first place by one point.

Lance Haser won four top-three prizes last Saturday in the Big Sky Games in Billings. He competed in the 14 to 15 year old age group, winning two-second places and two third places in the track and field division.

Pegasus Gold, Inc. is appealing a recent decision spelling out what the State of Montana and the Bureau of Reclamation expect Zortman Mining Inc. to do to reclaim the mined areas in the Little Rockies mountains.

Jason Erickson, of Saco, has been recognized for academic achievement as a US Honor Roll Award winner. He is the son of Lyle and Joyce Erickson of Saco.

LeeAnn Pekovitch took high point honors in the Senior Girl age with three first places at the Scobey Swim Meet.

July 19, 1973

Charles Claypool was presented with a 50-year pin and life membership in the Masonic Lodge by William Waters. He was initiated at the Balaton Lodge in Balaton, MN. In 1923.

Russ Cebulski greeted William Orbeck, of Federal Way, WA, when he landed his 1939 DeHaviland Tiger Moth biplane in Malta. Orbeck and his wife were stopping for fuel on their way to Canada for the annual meeting of the Scarf and Goggle Convention, an antique airplane club.

Catherine Nelson was given in marriage by her cousin, Richard Gilmore, to Loren Johnson. They were married in a morning ceremony at the Lutheran Church in Dodson.

A daughter was born to Mrs. Lynn Simonson of Whitewater.

Bill Cotter, president of the Phillips County Saddle Club, presented the high point trophies to Joel Heger and Diana Robinson.

Seven-year-old Rick Olson was the youngest outrider on the Wolf Point wagon train.

The Milk River Wagon Train Association had available postcards which showed Bud Hasler in the foreground, which was taken by Dr. Jim Curtis.

Mrs. Deb Long tied for second place in her flight and Knute Jacobson won second in his flight at the Glasgow Golf Tournament. Also participating were Mrs. Roger Ulrich, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Robertson, Deb Long, Glenn Flatt, Don Cole, Ron Scott, Bud Yates and Jim Nordlund.

Seven 4-H Clubs were represented at the 4-H Camp at the VFW recreation center near Landusky: Little Rockies Club, Landusky Gold Nuggets, Nifty Stitchers, Registered Sheep Breeder’s Club, Strater Baby Beef Club, Sun Prairie Gophers Club, and Sun Prairie Boosters.

Showing complete mastery over the Saco Sluggers, Gene Seel pitched his Malta teammates to a no-hit, no-run victory in the Phillips-Valley league on Sunday. Jack Campbell sparked the Malta attack with a triple, and Duane Simanton poled out a double.

The Phillips County Hangar of the Montana Pilots’ Association met and requested via letter the development of a landing strip at the Plunge and in Loring.

President Truman issued a proclamation calling for the draft registration to start on August 30. On that date, persons born in 1922 after Aug. 30 will register.

The loan rate for 1948 crop wheat will be $1.86 per bushel on farms in Phillips County, according to the ASA Committee.

Eli Southwick, a resident of the county for many years, died at the Ed Downing home in the Strater community.

Tom Kelly, one of the county’s old-timers, died at his home in Dodson. Funeral services were held at the A. J. Barrett home in Dodson.

The old courthouse offices above St. Hills’ store (Buttrey Foods) were being made into six apartments.

Kathryn Macey, senior clerk in the Malta post office, and John Hohler, who had been employed at various stores in Malta, were married in Portland, Ore.

George Martin, locally known as “Wild Bill the Bronc Buster,” was recovering from a broken finger received when a horse kicked him. The finger was about ready to use when an unbroken horse he was saddling, turned end for end, let fly with both hind feet and kicked him, breaking a finger on the other hand.

A big 50 horsepower engine and boiler purchased by John Survant and Lewis Trudell for irrigation purposes had arrived in Malta and was to be put to work in the near future.

J.E. Bowen of Whitewater was in town with the news that he had completed a fine six-room house on his ranch.
