Driver Jamie Johnson of Billings was not injured after the two pneumatic trailers he was pulling went off the road, slid 648 feet before it rolled a quarter of a roll and landed on the passenger side.

At the state swim meet, Darrow Messerly and Tate Carney brought home bronze medals. Shayen Garfield “went into the state meet seeded twelfth and swam for the championship, and finished sixth,” said Coach Lynn.

A time capsule buried in 1955 in Saco and discovered eight years ago will be reburied during Saco Fun Days along with some new items.

The First State Bank of Malta announced a new face on staff at the bank. President Jim Sandsness said Logan Lund of Lewistown is on board and he is glad to see more youth at the bank.

The carcasses of six beef belonging to Leila Mecklenberg, Danielle Lett, Rebecca Smith, Markelle Lett, Kendall Koss, and Vanessa Mitchell received Steer of Merit awards at the carcass judging.

Mary Nordlund was the grand prize winner of the Las Vegas trip during the open house at the newly opened Independence Bank.

A mental health training is being offered; like First Aid, Mental Health is a valuable tool when dealing with a crisis. Fallon Brown will conduct the classes.

Supt. Kris Kuehn said AYP testing is really just a “three-day snapshot in March of our education system” and doesn’t really measure student progress over an entire year.

Dan Ritchey, 32, has joined the Phillips County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy. His hiring returns the department to a staffing level of six plus the sheriff.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Olsen and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Olson invite family and friends to the wedding of their children, Ryan and Crystal.

Doug Plouffe, acting as his own attorney, filed a claim against the Department of Public Health and Human Services seeking damages for their actions against the Sleeping Buffalo in the 1990s.

The Malta Stockyards/Newby Livestock won the wild cow milking contest at the Phillips County Fair. The team consisted of Jim Orahood, Larry Olson, and Cameron Beachler.

Wyatt Pederson, 5, was crowned the champion junior bullfighter at the county fair in Dodson. The second runner-up was Colten Pekovitch, 8.

Wedding vows were exchanged and united Cory LaBrie, of Malta, and Monica Schaub, of Havre.

Eric Wilke and Dara Cline, and Jason Fladland and Jamie Anderson, had invitations inviting family and friends to their weddings.

City employees will get a one percent longevity raise plus a 10-cent an hour increase in their hourly rates. The hike does not apply to council members or the mayor.

The fourth annual Milk River Wagon Train is scheduled to leave Landusky early in the morning of Aug. 30 on its trek to Malta, according to co-chairmen, Louie Perry and Bud Hasler. Bud Bradley was named Wagon Boss and Gail Smith was named Trail Boss. Jake Wiederrick will be in charge of night camp guards, Sonny Oxarart is in charge of the red bandana troubleshooters.

A reception honoring Mr. and Mrs. Fern Taylor on their golden anniversary was held at the Little White Church.

The Cates Sisters, Margie and Marcy, will be featured at the Phillips County Fair on Sunday evening. Also appearing will be Jim Ed Brown and the nation’s most outstanding female yodeler, Jean Valli.

Action continued to increase in far-apart Montana gas and oil areas during the week. A newcomer, Midlands Gas, staked a series of tests that may include a hundred or more this week.

Bud Bradley owns “Muggie,” a horse of the remarkable age of 33. Born at the Bradley Ranch, the horse was broke by Bradley and rode until about five years ago.

Dr. Carl Totman was recognized as the past president of the Montana Optometric Association recently at their convention in Missoula.

Don Timm, a farmer and rancher from north of Hinsdale, had a narrow escape last week when a butane gas bottle exploded in the back of his pickup. He had left the pickup minutes before the explosion.

Aug. 5, 1948

Funeral services for Pvt. Carl Brun were held at the Custer Memorial Cemetery. Brun, 34, entered the service early in 1943 and met his death in April 1944. His body was returned to this country under the repatriation act for WWII dead. His widow, the former Mildred Paulson, flew in from Brooklyn for the services.

Chariot races will be an additional feature to the afternoon fair program this year, stated Edgar Lee, president of the Phillips County Fair Board. The breakneck speed, the flimsy chariots with drivers standing in them, urging the horses on, should make for thrills aplenty. Contestants will be required to sign clearance papers before participating, said Lee.

The race starter is George Pancake, and the judges are Sid Funk, Bryan Stevens, and Victor Nordlund.

Rough riding thrills and spine-jolting spills will be the order of the day when Johnny Hagen brings his string of horses to the Phillips County Fair on August 14 and 15. Local riders who are expected to participate are Sonny and Tweet Oxarart, Ike Blatter, Lloyd Trottier, and others.

Funeral services for Pfc. Merle Kaasa were held Wednesday afternoon. He was killed in action on March 26, 1945. He was 21 at the time of his death; he had graduated from Saco with the 1942 class.

“Arrowhead” a three-year-old gelding owned by Bill Simanton of Strater, won the three-year-old maiden race at the Marias Fair in Shelby last Saturday paying odds 64 to 2 and winning a $200 purse. Also racing was “Lucky Trail” owned by Bud Phillips of Dodson, who will also be entered in the races at the Phillips County Fair on August 14 and 15.

The fight arena at Shelby, the scene of the Dempsey-Gibbons bout on July 4, was sold at auction for $5,500 to satisfy a chattel mortgage held by the Monarch Lumber Company.

The Fred Southwick family had returned to Malta after a year spent in Oregon.

Mr. and Mrs. Magner had returned from Williston, N.D. with a brand new Studebaker Speedster.

Masked men held up a local gambling house and robbed it of $1,300, which it had taken the house several days to get in a similar manner from its patrons.

Guy Turpin had sold his saloon to A. E. Edwards of Edmonton, Alta.

Jeanie Davidson lost her saddlehorse. While riding at the ranch it suddenly fell. It was discovered it had a broken leg and had to be shot.
