Deputy Roberts Honored for Late Night Rescue at Nelson

Throughout a law enforcement officer's career, he or she may be called upon to set aside their safety in order to save another person's life. Such an incident took place on the evening of July 9, 2023.

Phillips County Deputy Sheriff Matthew Roberts responded to a disturbance at Nelson Reservoir at approximately 11:50 P.M. and found a juvenile female in the water 75 yards off-shore. It was apparent to Deputy Roberts that the girl was struggling to stay above water. Without hesitation, Deputy Roberts haphazardly removed his duty gear and went into the water to save the girl's life. Through his selfless actions and dedication to the community Deputy Roberts exemplifies the qualities of a law enforcement officer.

On Friday, August 11, 2023, it was Sheriff Jerry Lytle's honor and privilege to present Deputy Roberts with a plaque commemorating his life-saving efforts
