Residents of the county can now use the ENS (Emergency Notification System) for emergencies. The program acts as a Reverse 911 and allows dispatchers the ability to notify mass numbers of people in case of a disaster or warning. It also works for Amber Alert notifications.

The Phillips County Commissioners were preparing a grant to assist in funding the walking bridge across the Milk River. They say the need for a walking bridge is a safety one.

John and Ruth Flansaas were honored by friends and family on the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary.

The Phillips County Sheriff’s Office recently purchased two new patrol vehicles. The funding was through Operation Stone Garden and allows patrolling of the US borders. The last five vehicles have been funded through grant money.

Wind, loud thunder, and lots of rain pelted the Malta area for about 45 minutes just after midnight Tuesday morning. The KMMR weather station measured 1.54 inches of rainfall which fell in sheets propelled by gusts of wind up to 40 miles per hour.

Former Malta resident, Chuck Welch, was named to the National Director of New Business Development. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Robin (Lumsden) and they have three children.

Aug. 12, 1998

Two men from Helena were arrested in Trafton Park by the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office and the Tri-County Agency Drug Task Force. Arrested were Caine Osborn and Christopher Lorentzen. The operation resulted in the seizure of 317 grams of meth, drug paraphernalia, an unspecified amount of cash plus the older model Chevy Luv the two were driving. The estimated street value of the drugs seized was about $2,300.

The decision was made by the county commissioners to freeze wages and cut services to avoid a hike in property taxes.

Five generations were gathered to celebrate the 94th birthday of Ruth Abbey.

Family and friends of Thelma Turner were celebrating her 95th birthday at a reception in Havre.

The winner of the Malta Swim Team baby photo contest was Sophia Stiles, daughter of Del and KayDel Stiles of Whitewater. She received a $50 savings bond.

Ty Salsbery and Jake Murray placed second in the badminton category at the Big Sky State Games.

Burglars expended a lot of time and energy breaking into four businesses over the night. For all their efforts, they got away with $78 from the car wash.

The Bull Bash was a new attraction at the Phillips County Fair this year; the fair proved itself again as one of the best county fairs in the state.

Aug. 9, 1973

A cookie thief at the county fair had caused a mystery for several years; the chocolate chip cookies and chocolate fudge cookies had been disappearing for years. Finally, frustrated enough, Secretary of the Fair Board Marion Waters changed the padlocks and hired a night guard.

The following morning the watchman said he had shot the thief in the leg during the night. There was considerable excitement attending this revelation until the watchman explained he had shot the intruder – a pack rat.

Mike Camp, who had served on the city police force since Feb.1, 1972, has accepted a position as deputy sheriff under Sheriff Pete Messerly.

Rev. Fr. Martin Burke was honored at St. Mary’s Church. After serving three years here, he is being assigned to Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Great Falls.

Della Yeska had the Grand Champion fat beef at the Phillips County Fair. The beef weighed 1,190 pounds and sold for 89 cents per pound.

Adrienne Hitch had the reserve champion fat beef at the fair; weighing 1,200 pounds it was sold for 71 cents per pound at the livestock sale for $892. There were 78 beef sold this year.

Ralpha Smith of Malta and Duane Smith of Helena announce the engagement of their daughter, Ruth, to Ronald Moericke of Westby. A Dec. 29th wedding is planned.

Supt. Jim Nordlund announced the following new teachers that have been added to the Malta School staff. They include Jim Carver, Kent Hjelmstad, Sharon Weninger, Ken Larsen, Ron Meredith, Victor Schumacher, and Connie Combest.

Aug. 12, 1948

Jim the Boy, 35, a Fort Belknap Indian employed by the Ruby Gulch Mining Co. at Zortman, was killed when he was buried under tons of crushed rock in a sluice tank at the Ruby Mill. While sluicing tailings through a gate in the bottom of a tank, he apparently lost his footing and fell. He is survived by a wife and four children.

Montana’s 1948 lamb crop is 10% less than last year and the smallest crop on record. This year, 1,270,000 lambs were saved, compared to the largest crop of 2,965,000 head in 1944.

Johnny Hagen, Malta rodeo producer, promises fair crowds some real buckers when the rodeo opens this weekend at the Phillips County Fair. He will have a vicious bucker named Hagen’s Pet on hand for the riders. Well-known riders such as Ike Blatter, Lloyd Trottier, and Sonny and Tweet Oxarart are already entered.

Montanans purchased $11,187,000 of US Savings Bonds during the recent loan security program according to reports from Helena.

The two-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Kaufman died at her home on Beaver Creek.

Charles Magner was injured when a tire he was inflating blew up. The rim struck him in the head.

Morton Sherdahl, son of a Malta farm family was to make his debut singing at a concert in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY. He had been studying music since his discharge from a veteran’s hospital.

Malta was to have a good roads bee in September and businessmen were going to get out with the picks, shovels, rakes and trucks to remove rocks and fill in holes on roads over which the wheat crop would be moved to market. Especially in need of attention was the north Wagner Road and the Canadian trail from Mitchell Hill north.

Fred Monroe, a Saco sheepherder, in town to celebrate, imbibed too freely of Malta’s brand and decided to take a nap on the railway tracks. The early morning freight bumped him rather severely and his nose was wiped off his map for keeps.

Joe Hartman was offering a reward for the return of six head of work horses. Some wore the brand known as the Double Wrench.
