Greg Ziegler and his wife, Amanda, were returning to his hometown, to follow in his dad’s footsteps as a pharmacist. They were among some who were “coming home”.

Orvin Solberg was portraying Alex Murdock in the Historic Walk presented by the Phillips County Historical Society and Malta Dirt Daubers.

There will be a lot of Saco pride on display over the Labor Day weekend, as the community hosts its 50th Saco Fun Days with an All-School Reunion tossed in for good measure.

Thad Giblette, Family Nurse Practitioner, joined the Phillips County Health Clinic staff. He has a wife and three sons.

The 29th Annual Milk River Wagon Train will head out over Labor Day, beginning on Thursday. Wagon Boss is Rusty Pray and Trail Boss is Shane Anderson.

Malta City Council gave its okay to a 2013-2014 budget, which will see a levy of 189.25 mills compared to last year’s 147 mills.

Vandals destroyed the toilets in the restrooms located at Veteran’s Memorial Park, water was running under the door when discovered. Light bulbs, picnic tables and garbage cans were also targets of destruction. Vandals also hit Trafton Park restrooms and a storage shed that housed the riding lawn mower, which sustained damage.

Eight 4-H members traveled to Huntingdon County, PA, as part of an interstate exchange program, including Lance Anderson, Jacque Lind, Tess Lundstrom, Justine Knudson, Scott Ost, Nichole Robinson, Erin and Allisa Taylor.

Sports are gearing up with Cross Country headed to Poplar on Saturday and the M-ette’s and Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire basketball teams will be in Malta for action. The Dodson Coyotes will travel to Big Sandy.

Mustang standout, Kevin Lundstrom, was now a third-year starter at middle linebacker as an MSU Bobcat. He gave credit to Coach Scott King for guidance in his high school career.

The Malta Junior/Senior High School students had placed memorabilia in a time capsule to be placed behind a cornerstone at the High School as part of the Mason Ceremony.

Nate Solberg, now working in Townsend, was able to meet the pen pal he has been writing to since he was 11 years old. Heinz Wurzer, of Austria, spent several weeks enjoying the tour of the state with Nate.

April Taylor and Robin Luft were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in an evening ceremony. Mardee Scott and Brit Harris, nieces of the couple, handed out “silver candy kisses”.

Vic Nordlund of Dodson was recently awarded a trophy at the Midland Empire Fair in Billings for being the top racehorse trainer. He was the acting trainer for horses belonging to Don Pope, C. K. Hanson, and Phyllis Nicholson in addition to his own horses. This year the horses won six firsts, four seconds and four thirds. Not a bad effort for a very active 79-year-old.

Ruanne Payne became the bride of John Row, and they plan to make their home at their Beaver Creek ranch south of Malta.

Whitewater schools will be opening with new staff members Ken Hart, Michael Hammond, William Hauger, Mrs. Gladys Berg, Mrs. Pete DeMontigny, and Mrs. Shelley Dunbar.

Malta Schools will be opening Monday, with elementary starting at 8:50 a.m. and high school at 9 a.m. Lunch prices have increased from 30 cents to 35 cents. The regular start time for the high school will be 8:05 a.m., while elementary starts at 8:50 a.m.

“Aunt Julia” Schultz, age 100, passed away on Tuesday as Phillips County’s eldest citizen. She was a long-time resident of Dodson and a member of the Gros Ventres Tribe.

In a ceremony at the Lutheran Church, Kerry Compton and Gordon Faaborg were married. They will be living in Sidney.

Aug. 26, 1948

Dorothy Thompson and Phillip Perry, both well-known young people in the community, were married at Saco by Justice of the Peace Emil Lucht. They will live in Saco where the bridegroom operates the Gem theatre.

The remains of Pfc. Pius Wing of Hays, one of the Ft. Belknap casualties of WWII, will be returned to Montana for burial. The bodies of 18 Montanans are aboard the army transport Lawrence Victory. The veterans were all buried in temporary cemeteries in France.

Three Malta boys left this week to enroll in St. Edward’s Catholic Seminary. They are Tom Morrow, Jim Schumacher, and Edward Judge. It will be Morrow’s second year.

Dist. Supervisor Herb Friede states he has received numerous complaints from farmers and ranchers that they have observed the hunting of sagehens. The shooting of these birds is prohibited. They are one of farmer’s best friends. Friede said the birds live entirely upon grasshoppers, crickets, leaves, and grass, eating no grain whatsoever.

More than a million and a quarter miles have been traveled by military escorts accompanying the remains of WWII deceased to their final destination. Since October of 1947, a total of 1318 remains have been processed by the American Graves Registration, going to 13 western states and Canada. The total round-trip mileage traveled of the 1318 trips is 1,364,949, an average of 1043 miles a trip.

Mr. and Mrs. Perry Wilson sold their residence on West Survant Street to Gunder Flom of Wagner. He disposed of his real estate business and they are moving to the west coast.

Teachers in the Malta schools for the 1923-24 school year included Mrs. Celia Robinson and Mrs. Seth Dibble, junior high; Mrs. Nellie Stine, Ruth Andreason, Mrs. Catherine Weikle, Mrs. Gertrude Rathbone and Miss Lilian Cowing.

A hosiery salesman having represented himself under false colors to Malta housewives, found himself in the county jail for investigation.

R. V. Tucker sprained his ankle while dismounting his horse.

The Homestake people had abandoned their test for oil on the Bowdoin dome. The Phillips County well was encouraging difficulties with water.

Cecil Bigwood received a badly crushed thumb while working with machinery at the Dodson Dam.

Employees of the Bureau of Reclamation held their annual picnic, and about 100 attended.

A sensational suicide occurred at Wagner when David J. Barr, 25 years old, who had been employed on the construction of a coal chute, suddenly thrust a piece of paper into the hands of a fellow workman and threw himself in the path of the oncoming “Land Settlers Special.” His head and both arms were severed from his body. On the paper he had written, “I am going to die.” No one could account for his reckless action.

J.A. Hackshaw and William Legg, working in widely separated work areas, both suffered severe shocks during an electrical storm.
