Colt French had the upper hand in the hay bale race at Ag Ed Day for elementary students. He’s an old hand when it comes to shucking bales.

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) members gathered with Mayor Shyla Jones as she signed a proclamation commemorating the 220th anniversary of the Constitution. DAR members attending were Fays Seel, Mary Emily Barthelmess, Sara Schumacher, Barb Wiebe, Jan Abrahamson and Esther Brosseau.

Homecoming Royalty for King and Queen 2013 includes Morgan Williamson, Tess Lulloff, Meghan Johnson, Sadie Stiles, Nathan Veit, Zach Handley, Troy Manoukian, and Garrett Zanto.

Another chapter in the “Coming home” series was Luke, Becca, Lane and Cameron Spencer. As a master electrician, Luke has opened his own business, “Spencer Electric.”

Saco native Todd Mandeville seems to have found his niche in life, at the end of a paintbrush. With little actual training, he embarked on telling stories through his paintings of old tractors, vehicles and old barns.

With a total of 374 yards compared to Roundup’s 123 yards, the Malta Mustang football team pulled off a victory. The final score was 46-0 for the Mustang victory.

At the end of the golfing season, Marian Hills had an 18-hole tournament; the winner reigning supreme as the “Club Champion” is Gary Howell. He scored 75 and was only three over par. With a close 78 was Ron Scott for second.

The Bishop Builders, Inc. ladies golf team won the team championship with a score of 195.50 points. The team was comprised of Toni Bishop, Karey Bishop, Gale Simonson and April Knowles.

Sept. 16, 1998

In an attempt to pass a school bus, Aimie Frank, 17 years old, lost control of her car and wrecked by the Dodson Overpass. A passenger, Kara McConnell, was ejected from the car and went into the water. Frank and another passenger, Jessica Wilson, remained in the car despite not wearing seatbelts. Frank’s eight-month-old son was strapped in a car seat in the back seat and survived the accident.

Through a grant, the members of the Malta Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited will be able to turn a dry pond at the golf course into an active warm water fishery. The pond will be planted with rainbow trout. Rods and reels for kids will be available to check out through the County Library.

Stacy Nicholson and Donna Ruble announced their forthcoming marriage. The wedding is planned for Oct. 17th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate with Martin Sandvick on the occasion of his 85th birthday.

One hundred thirteen youths ages eight to fifteen flocked the football field for the annual Punt, Pass & Kick competition. Winning were girls age 8/9: Courtney Grant; age 10/11: Roshon Nordlund; age 14/15: Katie Weber. Boys winning were, age 8/9: Curtis Darrah; age 10/11: Tyler Sjostrom; age 12/13: Nathan Robinson, and age 14/15: Cody Oxarart.

A letter to the editor shared a thought of Joey Adams: “In our public schools today, the teachers are afraid of the principals, the principals are afraid of the superintendents, the superintendents are afraid of the board, the board members are afraid of the parents of the children, and the children are afraid of nobody.”

Eighty-four-year-old Ed Svien had started making the annual wagon train four years ago. This year he was riding with his grandsons, Maynard and Ed LaFond, and also Kit Kaufman. The Linsey wagon was bought new by Egil Solberg in 1916, who hauled loads of oats from Malta to Landusky with it.

Warren Abrahamson filled his buck deer tag on the first day of bow season. He brought down a nice 200-pound buck in the area north of Plum Creek.

The Glasgow Scotties slipped past the Malta Mustangs 6-0 to win the opening game for both teams. Coach Glenn Flatt stated he had outstanding performances from Ed Cerkovnik, Chip Young, Jim Taylor, Chuck Scheele, Dan Lundstrom, Jean Green, Mike Sims and Mike Clouse.

The highway patrol reported three accidents over the week, two of them involving livestock on the road. Richard Messerly struck and killed a horse belonging to Lloyd Knudsen. The accident happened at 2 a.m. and neither Messerly nor his wife were injured.

Eighteen very excited residents of the county were those with their names drawn for special elk permits.

Saco residents were awaiting the opening of bids next week for a new gymnasium and shop building. The main structure dimensions are 124 by 66 feet, with additional storage of 25 by 28 feet. The playing floor will be 84 by 48, one of the largest in northeastern Montana.

According to Fred L. Robinson, Montana’s national republican committeeman, Gov. Thomas Dewey, and his running mate, Gov. Earl Warren, will make stops in Montana. They will deliver speeches in seven Montana cities in their bid for the presidency.

Lee Davison, head football coach, said his team is green and a little weak. He will rely on senior lettermen Delmar LaBrie, Louis Ruiz, Alan Rose, Don Hould, Cliff Barrett, Delbert Long, Ole Veseth, Tom Simanton, Vernon Doran, Jay Knudsen and Robert Lamb for strength and leadership.

Montana has the most adequate general hospital facilities of any state, according to Federal Security Administrator Oscar Ewing. There should be 4.5 beds in general hospitals for every 1,000 persons in the state. Montana has considerably more than “basic” requirements; Montana has a 6.1-bed ratio, the only state with more than six beds per 1,000 persons.

Enrollment in the Malta schools, including grade and high school, totals 629 pupils. This is a drop from 659 pupils last year. The freshman class of 51 is the smallest in 20 years.

Jack Lang of the Pasttime will award a 14-inch bronze horse to the best-uniformed rider and horse from the Saddle Club at the Fall Roundup parade this weekend. One of the largest crowds in Malta’s history is expected to be on hand to watch riders and cowhands bite the dust this weekend at the rodeo.

The first of a contingent of Mormons had arrived in Malta looking for irrigated farms upon which to locate.

Arnt Monger and Miss Mary Tillman were married in Malta; they plan to live at Content.

The Beta Alpha club was organized by a group of Malta girls. Members included Violet Veseth, Esther Edwards, Evelyn Watson, Evelyn Heiser and Esther Kodalen.

Judge A. Davidson was in Harlem on business connected with a horse show. He planned to show a Clydesdale stallion and broodmare.

P. J. Rowe, locally known as “Billy Roar” had died; he had been known as one of the most popular dispensers of liquid refreshments for about three years.

George Cunningham of Dodson was arrested by Stock Inspector Hall and taken to Chouteau County for a hearing on a charge of “unlawful handling” of a colt owned by George Smith.
