A stand-alone independently owned bank, The First State Bank of Malta celebrated its 110th anniversary last March. As of October, Bob Galt became just the eighth president of the bank in its long history.

A daughter, Castielle Louise, was born to Jory and Katherine Schipman. She joins brothers, Ross and Cody, and sister Lexis.

A filming crew was at the Great Plains Dinosaur Station to film for a possible series, “Bone Rangers.” Local rancher Brenda Koss was interviewed as the museum has numerous fossil finds from the ranch by owned by her and her husband, Kevin.

Erin Elizabeth Solberg was born to Roger and Shari Solberg in Havre. Art and Sue Solberg are the paternal grandparents.

Traffic delays, lane closures and reduced speed limits will be implemented to aid the construction and repair of Highway 191 approximately 18 miles south near James Kipp Recreation Area.

Whitewater native, Andrea (Hammond) Lien and her husband, Wyatt, had moved home and were part of the “Coming home...” series. They are the parents of twin daughters.

The Malta M-ettes were led by Darby Schye with 29 kills to sneak by the Poplar Indians in tough volleyball matches. Tessa Lulloff led the team with 16 of 68 digs.

Local winners in the Little Rockies Sectional Bridge Tournament held in Malta were Malcomb Clouse and Bonnie Millar.

Some Miles City Cowboys thought they were going to tame and ride a visiting team of Malta Mustangs. Into the first quarter, Malta began bucking and threw the Cowboys for a hard fall on the Miles City grass in a 34-9 Malta win. It was the first win in five straight tries.

With 11 seconds on the clock, Penguin Ashley Hammond shot two free throws to cinch the 34-30 win over Hinsdale.

Carolyn Morrow was to be the guest at a 90th birthday party in her honor, to be held at the New Country Home.

The fine craftsman skills of Ken Wiederrick were on display at the local bank. A cedar chest he made was being donated to the Health Care Foundation Fundraiser.

Malta student body had voted Shannon Davis and Nick Oxarart as the ’98 Homecoming royalty.

Ronna MacKay was the first-place winner in the Octoberfest promotion in the decorating competition. Second place was won by Jan Kirkwood and Pat Anderson won third. Stacy Solberg was the winner of the pumpkin weight guessing contest – she was right on with her guess of 144 pounds.

An open house was held to welcome Thad Giblette, Family Nurse Practitioner, his wife, Suzanne, and their three boys.

The children of Bob and Evelyn Brandt were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at the Senior Center.

Janice Reichelt, R.N. at the Phillips County Medical Center, was recognized as the first Employee of the Quarter.

The Saco Panther basketball girls came close twice but were unable to claim a win, losing to Lustre Christian Academy and Frazer. Erica DePuydt led Saco with 16 pts. and Brooke Beadle added 15.

The Punt, Pass and Kick competition was held last Saturday. In the eight-year-old division first went to Daniel Raymond; nine-years-old: Brad Shell; ten-years-old: Lance Beto; eleven-years-old: Del Stiles; twelve-years-old: Mark Halvorson; and thirteen-years-old: Gary Nordlund. They will advance and compete in Great Falls on Saturday.

James Fladland of Malta has been installed as parliamentarian for the Office Education Association at Helena Vocational-Tech Center.

Bill Smith is the new manager of Anthonys in Malta. Smith comes from Columbus where he was store manager for four years. A native of Rhode Island, he and his wife, Carol, have five children.

The District 2 fall meeting of the American Legion and Auxiliary will be hosted by Malta on Oct. 7. Robert Jacobs, Commander of Post 57, states that 150 are expected to attend. Legion Posts in the district are Havre, Chinook, Big Sandy, Malta, Hogeland, Gildford, Dodson, Saco, Chester and Turner.

Oct. 7, 1948

Chief of Police A. W. Pray announced yesterday that he and Officer Einar Veseth had run down the perpetrators of a series of Malta resident robberies that occurred during the summer in the absence of the owners. Two of the three boys are already on probation because of a conviction on a similar charge.

Information was filed directly in district court Tuesday charging Floyd Miller, a transient, with grand larceny. He pled innocent to the charge, was bound over to the district court under $1000 bail and remanded to the custody of Sheriff Frank Partridge.

Agnes Kegel Cruikshank, of Turner, became the bride of David Erickson at a quiet double-ring ceremony at the Saco Lutheran Church Sunday morning.

The Dodson Coyotes will return to the football wars Friday afternoon when they travel to engage the Panthers. Prospects have been considerably brightened by the return of Clarence Adams and Doug Kirkaldie to the lineup.

A brand new hearse, being driven to Alberta, Canada, was involved in a wreck east of Harlem. Harold Culhan, driver of the hearse, his wife and two little girls were riding in the vehicle; the only casualty was Mrs. Culhan, who received a broken finger.

The Ruby Gulch mill near Zortman, said to be one of the largest in the state, was destroyed by a fire of unknown origin. Manager Walter Phillips was out of town on business at the time. The mine had been reopened after a shutdown during the war.

People of the Content community had held a chicken dinner from which $45 was realized. The money was to be used to purchase an organ for the Grove Coulee school.

Walter Risen was in from the north bench stating he was a firm believer in corn as a Montana crop. He reported that lambs turned into a corn field had gained 10 pounds in two weeks. At that rate, he figured his corn land had yielded him $40 per acre. He was going to plant 200 acres in the spring.

Stock Inspector George Hall had unearthed one of the biggest horse thief gangs in history. He had recovered 50 head at Williston, N. D. that had been stolen from the Coburn outfit. Many prominent businesses were said to be involved.

Carl Buttman, 30, died at the local hospital. He had crawled to the hospital on his hands and knees. He had been in town for several days. “Booze finally nailed him to the cross,” the editor commented.

Sixty thousand head of lambs had been delivered to Malta. The price was about $3.20 per head.
