Addy Anderson, winner of the third grade “What I learned at Ag Ed Day” contest said, “Cows are good for the environment because when cattle graze they reduce the length of grass. Cattle fight fires another way also. When they graze the grass, it gets shorter and it keeps it so there is less fire.”
Winners of the first “Brag Tag” awards at Dodson School were Nellene Messerly, Christina Jaynes, Tanner Ball, Cash KillEagle, Junior Stiffarm, Christopher Jaynes and Jeremiah Henry. Introduced by new Superintendent Debbie Combs, it is to refine social skills and respecting others.
Venture Crew 2429 held the Eagle Court of Honor for Terrence Snell at the VFW.
The Malta M-ette volleyball team lost a tough match to Chinook in five games in Chinook.
M-ette runners, Eva Harms and Marley Manoukian finished third and fourth at the Dodson Invitational.
Jenifer Anderson, in their reasoning for “Coming home…” said, “We had quite a few friends that thought we were crazy for moving back here. It’s not for everybody, but it’s for us.” She and her husband, Shane and two daughters made the move home from Billings.
Clark Kelly, county fire warden, Mike Flatt, rural fire chief and Marty Lundstrom, manager of Milk River Cooperative, welcomed a new GMC diesel rescue-recovery truck, made possible by a $50,000 payment from Cenex Harvest States (CHS).

Malta native, Karl Ohs, was praised before the US Senate and will receive the FBI’s highest honor for his part in ending the 1996 Freeman standoff near Jordan.
Members of the Big Flat Electric Cooperative were looking at a rate hike with the loss of revenue from Zortman Mining.
Ashley Hammond scored 41 points in two basketball games to keep the Penguins undefeated.
Though it was close much of the game, Malta Mustangs opened up and walked away with a 21-0 victory over Plentywood in football action.
Chamber directors Lonnie Link and Denis Bolland assisted with the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Last Chance Clothing with owner Carmen Allen. Mayor Byron Ereaux did the honors. Shana Carpenter also opened the Kid’s Closet at a similar ceremony.
Five schools gathered at Landusky for the annual Landusky Montana History Fair. Students presented displays before the judges Nate Murphy, Greg Kelsey, Dolores Hughes, Carol Owlsey, Florence Schumacher and Janice Roberts.
Family and friends of Florence Taylor are invited to a 90th birthday party in her honor at the Saco Lutheran Church.

Homecoming royalty are queen candidates Darla Ereaux, Cindy Kaufman, Cindy Wiprud, and Terri Cerkovnik. King candidates are Steve Baeth, Jean Green, Doug Goodheart and Chip Young.
The Malta Mustangs football team traveled to Choteau to be defeated 36-14, in a game where the Bulldogs forced Malta to make mistakes and capitalized on them. With a minute to go at half, Malta had tied it up with a 32-yard run by Byron Hould.
Residents at the newly opened Sheltered Workshop are Annie Jefferson, Janice Carlson, Emma Lenz, Tom Odderman and Richard Fauth.
Dale Edmister was the guest speaker at the Malta Women’s Club and he spoke on Indian religion. Mrs. Robert Soper’s fourth grade class; dressed as Indian maids; sang an Indian song. They were Arlana Froman, Becky Rothie, Sandra Martin, Sherry Simser, Julie DeVries, Kathy Hould and Kari Sintler, accompanied by Mrs. Dick DeVries.

Newcomers at Malta high school are Mary Ann Shores, who thinks the upper classmen are very nice. Eva Grimsley comes from Box Elder, she dislikes stupid people and rain. From Iowa comes Phillip Sousa, who dislikes school but loves hunting.
The Malta Mustangs staged an even battle with Plentywood but were greatly handicapped by the loss of Deb Long, who broke his leg in the closing seconds of the first quarter. The Wildcats handed them a 12-7 loss. One of the Plentywood boys was knocked unconscious and Chuck Klimper broke a bone in his hand.
James Leo served 39 years on the railroad track between Blackfoot and Williston, and had been stationed at every town and village between the two points. At the end of his 39 years he chose to retire.
First year teacher, Dean Robertson, vocational agriculture teacher, has an unusual enrollment. It is estimated that his Vo-ag department is the third largest in the state.
Sgt. Delbert Compton, of Loring, will be released from the Air Force upon his return from overseas duty.
Jack Reynolds participated in a rodeo beard-growing contest and ultimately won. The lady judges said it was very fine textured long staple stuff and worth 90 cents a pound with the burrs combed out of it.
Harvey Holman’s grand champion baby beef sold at auction for 75 cents per-pound to top the sales of 11 baby beeves. The Great Northern Kitchenette bought the calf.

The Regina school was the largest rural school in Phillips County. Miss Alma Coe, teacher, reported 14 pupils in the first grade.
Five public auctions were advertised for the coming week.
George Taylor won the scholarship medal for the first six weeks in the fifth grade.
An old rooming house located across the street from the Standard garage was destroyed by fire. The residence of Mr. and Mrs. A. Cavanaugh was badly damaged by the flames before the firemen could control the blaze.
Harlem defeated Malta 53-0 in a football game at Malta.
Dodson was host to the quarterly meeting of the Masonic district organization.
Donald Pope was a new student at Malta junior high.

The first snowstorm of the season was falling as the paper went to press.
A suit which was calculated to adjudicate all rights and interests in and to the waters of Milk River was filed in district court in Fort Benton. There were about 40 plaintiffs and approximately 200 defendants.
B. D. Phillips had completed the threshing of 5,000 bushels of grain.
Dr. R. P. Minnick of Saco passed the state medical examination.
George Case was arrested at Saco for the theft of 30 horses.
Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Murray were the parents of a son.
