Bobby Knudsen, former M-ette basketball standout, has been selected by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association as an All-American for the West Region.

The Malta Mustang football team header in to final game of the season 4-3 to face the Harlem Wildcats. Malta has not lost a game to Harlem since 1986, when Head Coach of the Mustangs, Scott King was head coach of the Wildcats.

Gary and Barb Anderson and Zane and Barbie Gray donated two semi-trailer loads of choice grass mix hay to the Health Care Foundation Fund-raiser auction.

Winners at the 4-H Miscellaneous Judging were: Senior Division, Riley Mortenson; Advanced Juniors, Parker Mortenson; and Beginning Juniors, Spencer Gibbs. Livestock Judging winners included: Beginning Juniors, Brett Wiebe; Advanced Juniors, Raina Mortenson; and Seniors, Madison Waters.

Carter Epperson participated in the All-State Band while Edwin Medina and Logan Witmer were both members of the All-State Choir. The Festival was held in Bozeman.

Cake and coffee were served in honor of Pete Tribby, who was retiring from the City of Malta.

Coach Julia Tatafu thought her M-ette volleyball squad played pretty good; they beat Harlem in three games. However…the following night they lost to Glasgow in three; Glasgow was 8-1 for the season.

The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire volleyball team defeated the Poplar Indians in four games; Coach Kathy Siroky said, “We have to keep up the intensity and communicate.” Every match counts, but it is crucial the Wildfire brings their A game to each game.

Malta hosted the State Dart Tournament and the town was abuzz with travelers for the event.

Oct. 21, 1998

Four generations of the Frye family gathered to celebrate Manson’s 80th birthday. He was joined by son, Bob, grandson Wes, and the newest Frye, Riley.

BOY was it a week! The PCN announced the birth of McKay (to Justin and Jodi Starr), Reed (to Gregg and Tara Wasson), Grant (to Dan and Sheila O’Brien), Cru (to Jeff and Lona Darrah), and Hunter (to JBob and Katy Hould).

Things came to a halt at the City Council following the opening of bids for a proposed sidewalk project. The project was sent back to the engineering firm to see what options they now have. Mayor Byron Ereaux was frustrated by the way the project was bid. He had hoped it could be bid so small contractors could bid on different sections of the project.

Erik Engebretson was selected to be included in the Outstanding Young Men of America. The program awards those who have distinguished themselves in service to their community, professional leadership, academic achievement, cultural accomplishments, and civic and political participation.

The afternoon kindergarten class toured the fire department and tried on protective gear worn by fire fighters. They included Jerrit Harms, William Hotaling, Landen Shettel, Alex Porter, Kelsie Handley, Holly Sullivan, Jarrod Williamson, Noah Harms, and Houston Demarais.

On Friday, the Malta M-ettes roundballers will host the Chinook Sugarbeeters, the only team to beat them this year. When they played in Chinook, they were without the starters Pekovitch and Guilfoyle.

The City Council tabled a request for the conditional use of the former superintendent’s house for a mortuary until it could consider rezoning. The application was submitted by Ken and Lana Ulrich.

County educators, Robert Hicks, of Dodson, Jay Malone, of Saco, Susan Schulte, of Whitewater, and Malta’s Lynne Brewer, Gaelen Curtis and Karen Wiederrick were honored in the fifth edition of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, 1998.

The children of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Barnard and Mr. and Mrs. Adam Koss cordially invite friends and relatives to celebrate the 25th wedding anniversary of their parents. They are hosting a reception at the Little White Church in their honor.

Mr. and Mrs. Russel Young and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hines invite you to share in the marriage of their children, Laurel and David, at the Assembly of God Church.

John and Debbie (Seaford) Severide welcomed a daughter, Kristine Ann. They reside in Hamilton.

All federal, state and county offices, and most Malta businesses would be closed on Monday, Oct. 22, in observance of Veteran’s Day.

Darla Ereaux and Doug Goodheart were crowned Homecoming Royalty at an assembly. Miss Ereaux received a dozen roses from the M Club and Goodheart received bumps and bruises in the football game win over Shelby.

Mrs. Carl Eaton, fourth grade teacher and chairman of the citizenship committee for the Malta unit of the Montana Education Association, was shown with students whose essays were printed in the PCN. Essay winners were Tom Ogden, Jack Wiprud, Mike Mangis, Tim Nelson, Pat Schumacher, Paul Crowder, Mark Knudsen, Curt Reynolds, Laurel Chamberlain, Teresa Halvorson and Jodee Wilson. They wrote on “What Education Means to Me.”

During the halftime of the football game, the band put on a “Salute to Veterans” in observance of Veteran’s Day. Veterans participating were from WWI and II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. Dillon Schmittou, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, was the oldest veteran attending.

Lee Schumacher (veteran of WWI), N. J. Cummings (veteran of WWI and II) and Dillon Schmittou (Spanish-American War), were honored at the game between Malta and Shelby. A color guard was comprised of Monte Robertson, Dixon Grant, Leland Grant, Clarence Mikkelson, Dwayne Raymond, Percy Halvorson, Robert Dooner, Robert Jacobs, Collin Campbell and David Henry.

Duane Walker, 1971 Malta graduate, is currently the starting tight end for the University of Montana football team.

According to a phone call received by Senator Fred L. Robinson, a contract was let for construction of 19.49 miles of road south from Loring. Peter Kewitt and Company was awarded the contract for $156,127.60.

Mischief Domino 70th, reserve champion of the sixth annual Northeastern Montana Breeders Association show sold to William Armington, Content rancher, for $1,800. He was consigned by Steve Holman, of Dodson, local Hereford breeder.

A hard-charging Malta Mustang eleven swamped the Havre Colts by a 23 to 0 score at the Mustang field Saturday night. They were pointing to win the game for Deb Long, who broke his leg in the Plentywood game last week. Coach Davison sent Long a telegram at the Great Falls hospital, saying “this one’s for you, Deb.”

The Dodson Coyote six-man football team will meet Fairview for the Northeastern Montana district football title. They won the right to play for the championship by beating Nashua last Saturday. In that game Dodson had great plays from Nordlund and McNamara.

The night cook and waiter at the Arcade café were held up by two masked men believed to have come into town on a freight train and departed the same way. They took about $165 from the two men and from the cash register.

Every effort to limit the amount of damage done on Halloween was going to be done in Malta. High school boys were to be deputized and constant patrols of the town maintained, Mayor Ellis Blumenthal promised.

Glasgow defeated Malta by a 6-0 score in football.

Matt Flannery was arrested for the theft of a gun from a sheep wagon parked near the stockyards.

Four carloads of beer had been received and freighted to Zortman.

The Malta Aerie of the Eagles lodge was organized with considerable pomp and ceremony. About 50 members of the Glasgow lodge were on hand to assist.
