A baby boy, Houston, was born to Skip and Shari (Starr), in Las Vegas, NV. He joins a sister and four brothers. Grandparents are Curtis and Bonnie Starr, formerly of Malta; he is their 26th grandchild.

Malta Middle School announced the Sept. Students of the Month. Chosen for demonstrating positive attitude, manners, politeness to all, standing up for others and leadership were Marcus Woods, Kaylanna Bain, Kendall Koss and Taylor Gilkerson.

Over 170 books were donated to Malta Elementary and Middle School, Saco, Hinsdale and Loring Schools. The books were distributed by the Alpha Zeta from profits of their annual Specialty Fair held in November.

Clausen Construction of Havre was awarded the bid for a new county shop in Dodson. The bid of $341,508 was the only bid received. A 60’ x 80” Behlen building with a 19’ high roof, the project is paid for by federal mineral royalties received by the County.

Quintan Boos stepped up and filled in for injured Reid Robinson to help win the season-ending game for the Mustang football season. He led the team with 240 yards on carries, placing him in the top five in Mustang history.

Fans got their last look at four-year state finalist, Nicholas Bear, a senior on the Dodson Cross Country Team, who placed second at State. Jeret Warren placed 12th, and Henry Ramirez placed 16th.

Malta’s Sophia Stiles placed seventh at the State Cross Country meet, to help the M-ettes place ninth at state for the third year in a row.

With their win over the Wolf Point Wolves, the M-ette volleyball team placed third in district action.

“Coming home…” and bringing his wife, Jennifer, and two sons, is RJ Tollefson. He went to work for Malta Ready Mix as manager.

Carol Kienenberger was the lucky winner of the grand prize, a stock trailer, at the Annual Health Care Foundation Fundraiser.

Four generations gathered for a family picture. They included great-great grandmother Maude Moore, great-grandmother, Dolly Kroll, grandmother Bonnie LaBrie, and father, Cory LaBrie. The center of attention was Jacob LaBrie, who slept soundly through the picture-taking event.

Placing first as a team at the speech meet in Cut Bank were Jami Brogan (3rd); Dwight Score (5th) Erik Faaborg (7th), Erica Hanson (3rd), Nikki Robinson 6th) Stephanie Vickhammer (7th), Ashleigh Beck (5th), Sara Faaborg (1st), Leila Barnard (2nd) and Nancy Noske (1st), LeAnn Komis (2nd) and Joey Sims (3rd) in their particular categories.

In the drama events Jayla Depuydt and Mandy Long (3rd), Brent Nast and Adam Demars (3rd), Julie Owens and Shonda Jenkins (4th), Lynette Crasco and Liz Burke-Coon (5th), Tom Pinnock (1st), Bethany Johnson (2nd) and Kris Boothe (3rd).

Good Samaritan resident, Louise Dunham, enjoyed a visit from the local Girl Scouts, who brought pets along for the residents to enjoy. Michelle Dusek brought her kitten, Skeeter, to visit.

Joe and Wanda Reynolds were trading burgers and chicken and fries for retirement as they sold the business they started in May of 1962, “Joe’s In & Out” on the south edge of town. The Reynolds lived through tough economic times as well as the death of two of their sons. They saw the price of a hamburger patty go from 35 cents to $1.80, and wages go from 50 cents an hour to $5.15. The new owners, Dale and Sherry Salveson, plan to keep the name the same.

Tracie Overberg and Brian Marney brought home medals for the Dodson Coyote Cross Country team, placing 5th and 14th. Others finishing the race were Alex Anderson, Eddie Hawley, K. J. Wilke and Tyson Hunt.

The Mustang football team pulled off a 49-15 sweet victory over the Glasgow Scotties, leaving them in second place in the 2B and earned them a first-round berth at Cut Bank to play the 1B second-place Wolves.

Oct. 25., 1973

Pfc. Don Score was injured when a car he was a passenger in was in an accident. The vehicle was hit broadside. He and the driver, Dean Vanderhoff were both heading home from four months of training with the National Guard at Fort Sills, OK. A week after the accident his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Score and Kenneth Cebulski, pilot, flew to Fargo to bring him home.

The streets of Malta turned into a large corral as panels and gates formed pens for the Exotics North sale. The sale brought a record $305,420 in sales.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Koss, weighing seven pounds and nine ounces.

George Campbell, son of Mrs. Emma Campbell, and Eugene Clarke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Clarke, now of Fargo, N.D. have enlisted in the U.S. Navy for three-year terms.

Glen Messerly was brought to the county jail in Malta Monday by Deputy Sheriff Horace Smith in the aftermath of a brawl staged in front of a Landusky beer hall Sunday morning in which “Fuzzy” Fore was cut in the side and hip with a knife.

An investigation of the affair is being conducted by sheriff’s officers. Messerly was arrested on a warrant charging assault in the first degree.

Mrs. Rose Brezina was buried in the family plot in the Malta cemetery following services by Rev. Gronneberg. She was married in North Dakota to John Brezina, they moved to the North Wagner, later to a farm west of Malta. Pallbearers were Miles Tuma, William Dorn, William Dvorshak, Louis Tuma, William Cotter and William Driver.

Funeral services for Cpl. Kenneth Combes, who died in action in the invasion of Corregidor in the Philippines will be held Friday at the Malta Community Church. He was born in Malta and graduated from high school here. His parents now live in Spokane, WA.

One Malta hunter had all the luck on a recent hunting trip into Sun River country. Resting in the meat locker at Pete’s Produce is a bull elk dressing out more than 300 pounds. The elk was downed by Pete Stewart on a two-week hunting trip. Others on the trip were Bill Thomson, Bernal Southwick, Malcomb Taylor, Bill Pray, Hubert Drabbles and Keith Morrison.

The American Red Cross chapters have been 98 percent successful in locating nearly 31,000 next of kin of World War II dead in connection with the reburial program. The army wished to learn from the next of kin whether or not they wished the remains of relatives to be returned to the U.S. for reburial. The remains of 81,500 members of the armed forces have already been returned, and 150,000 are expected to be returned for final burial.

Vital Statics show that a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Wilke on Oct. 26th. A marriage license was issued to Howard Barnard and Agnes Wilson on Oct. 25.

The small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Berry of Zortman died of burns received when her clothing caught on fire from a stove.

J. F. Kildruff and A. A. Cavanaugh had put up a $2,000 bond for the release of George Cunningham, who was charged with shooting and injuring Frank Pierce of the Wagner community.
