Meet the New Librarian

Phillips County gained a new employee with the addition of Crystal Klein as the new Librarian.

She was selected from applicants upon the retirement of Janeen Brookie, who retired after 28 years as the County Librarian. Crystal started on November 6th and joins Michelle Mitchell, part-time aide at the library.

Although not a new face in the community, Crystal is relatively new to many. Previously she was employed at Valley Drug as a clerk. She provided her two weeks' notice to accommodate her change of employment. This provided her with the opportunity to train under Janeen, with her vast knowledge and experience.

Training for the new position would include ordering books, preparing a budget for the County Commissioners approval, sharing the methods and steps required for handling financial transactions within the office, such as collecting fines on late books, damaged books, and accounting for charges for books that were lost.

There is training in processing payments and accountability to the State of Montana for funds received to be learned. The job entails a strong working relationship with various entities, including the Commissioners, the Library Board and the general public.

The atmosphere of a library should be a peaceful one, especially when hosting the Storytime for wee ones. The library is often a draw-me-away sanctuary for those needing peace and quiet. Harmony and a blend of helpfulness and cheerfulness make the library a place to visit often.

Crystal is being aided in her training with the assistance of her co-worker, former librarian aides and the board members, all who have been a great source of support.

Crystal is the mother of two young daughters, Kimber (11) and Oakleigh (4). She is the daughter of Mitch Scheffelmaer of Dodson, and the late Ruth Scheffelmaer. She also has a sister, Ashley (Knudsen) of Malta. She moved here from Chinook, so adapting to the big city life wasn't too hard.

Often, you can find Crystal on the racetracks at the dragstrip, with her camera in hand. She enjoys photography, friends, outdoors, being around friends and sharing time together.

With the new position, there is bound to be changes. The library has been in an idle position but plans of updates, new ideas and a grasp on matters, look for some new things to be happening at the library. Feel free to stop in, introduce yourself and share any ideas you might have to bring a new refreshing atmosphere to the library.
