Cecelia Lankford, mother of fourteen, was honored on the occasion of her 100th birthday.

Charles G. Mahan, of Malta, and a Nevada man were convicted and sentenced on hunting-related charges in Phillips County Justice Court. Mahan, who had previously lost his hunting privileges for life, paid $6,310 and was sentenced to 180 days in jail, which he served under house arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office received a report of a mutilation of a cow on the South Wagner Road, Hwy 363. The udder area of the cow had been cut away with a sharp instrument. In another report, a 2002 Honda CR 250, valued at $3,000 was reported stolen out of the back of a pickup on 2nd Ave. West.

Dodson School is one of five finalists in schools across Montana in the Samsung contest called Solve for Tomorrow, a commitment to drive interest in Science Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) learning across America.

Anne Johnson placed first in the adult division of the “Make It With Wool” contest. Ceri Demarais won the pre-teen category.

School children from around the county and other community members gathered at the courthouse lawn on Veterans Day as part of the ceremony honoring veterans.

County Superintendent of Public Schools Gary Baden unveiled the new County Flag, a project he had spearheaded. Diane Smith, board member of the Historical Society, served as emcee for the event. The winning design had been submitted by Allyson McAulley.

Jaci Hawley has been selected as the 1999 HOBY Delegate for Dodson High School. She is the daughter of Ed and Ruth Hawley of Hays.

Athletic Director Scott King and volunteers Ted Kelly and Larry Lett were busy on Tuesday morning spreading out covers on the football field in an attempt to protect it until the matchup between the Mustangs and Huntley Project on Saturday.

Marko Manoukian, the new County Extension Agent, will take office on Jan. 4th.

Down 12-0 against the Baker Spartans, even though the fat lady was warming up in the wings, the Malta Mustangs saved it up until the last seven minutes of the game to pull off a “Miracle in Baker” by winning 13-12.

A total of 87 violations totaling $198,000 were cited to brothers Danny and Lloyd Flansberg in “Operation Breaks.” This earned Field Wardens Shane Reno and Kelly Friede received the Director Award for their four years on excellence and hard work.

Joe and Wanda Reynolds were honored guests at a supper for their retirement and move to Las Vegas.

The Mustangettes won one and lost one in conference games last week. The win came on Friday when they defeated Box Elder 54-30. Renee McKeon led the scoring for Malta with 16 points and Sherry Green added 10.

A traditional Armistice Day dinner was held with 74 members of the WWI Barracks, its auxiliary and guests attending. Members of the local Barracks attending were Bert Larsen, Mike Perraut, Lee Schumacher, Shaw Andrews, Ingolf Hagen, Ed Erickson and Earl O’Brien, Henry Cole, Harry Hanion, Hans Jensen, Archie Caberry, N. J. Cummings, Byron Bebee, V. C. Mitchell, W. E. Woods, John Cibulski, W.C. Kienenberger, Dan DePuydt, Fred Just, Brewer Anderson, Ernest Freestone, Oscar Rockstad, Egil Solbergm Joe Holzhey, Arthur Ulness, George Koschel, Mathias Martinz, and M. R. Nelson.

Malta Mustangs were well presented on the All-Conference football teams for the Class A northern division. Named to first team were Ed Cerkovnik, running back, and Al VanHoudt, tackle. First team defense, Chip Young, end, and Mike Simanton, defensive back. Second team offense, Byron Hould, running back; Jean Green, guard, and Todd Smith, center. Second team defense, Al VanHoudt, middle linebacker, and Jean Green, linebacker.

Fifteen high school girls will compete for the title of Phillips County Junior Miss. They include Jody Ames, Jeanie Austin, Falinda Doucette, Diane Erickson, Carol Flansaas, Marlene Hansen, Margie McKoy, Brenda Nordlund, Catherine Page, Linda Pancake, Diana Robinson, Joan Robinson, Bonita Shipp, Kathy Slade, and Terri Williamson.

Tumbling team tryouts were held and selected were: Jody Ames. Peggy Humbert, Donna Henry, Cindy Kaufman, Rhonda Shell, Marilyn Golik, Bernie VanHoudt, Elaine Ames, Susan Davis, Marianne Emond, Geri Kaasa, Patti Oxarart and Kathy McKoy.

Nov. 18, 1948

Three county youths left this morning for Butte to take their pre-induction examinations. County men who left are Donald Erickson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Erickson of Saco; Holger Heppner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Heppner of Landusky and Lee T. Olson son of T. H. Olson of Malta.

J. M. “Mitch” Oxarart, well-known county stockman, recently had a chance to play host to a tuckered-out racing pigeon that alighted at his Content ranch in an exhausted condition after being blown off its course by a high wind. Mitch offered the bird food, shelter, water and a place to roost for a while-meanwhile writing a note to its Colorado owner saying that all was well. The bird ungratefully jumped the gun, however, by escaping and reaching its home ahead of the letter.

The information about its owner came from a leg band. Mitch also says he has entertained other guests which have caused him more trouble than this pigeon, too!

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Kesler were the parents of a daughter, born Nov. 10 in Havre. She has been named Linda Dale.

Malta Legion Post No. 57 will have a permanent color guard to act at military funerals it was decided at the regular meeting Monday evening. Commander Joe Rose will appoint the committee members. Efforts are continuing to reach the post’s membership quota of 136 by December 31, Commander Rose stated.

There is deer meat hanging in the woodsheds, packed in the farm and ranch deep freezers or stored in commercial lockers of Phillips County this season. Game Warden Supervisor Herb Friede estimates that 250 head of deer were killed in the county this fall. Buttrey’s meat department alone cut up approximately 4,000 pounds of venison for locker renters in Malta.

The Circle Diamond school won the school exhibit event at the county fair, it was announced somewhat belatedly. Brookside took second place.

Norman Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Taylor of Malta, was one of two men killed near Libby when an old pine tree blew down, crashing into a tent where four men were sleeping. Funeral services were held in Malta with the American Legion according to military rites.

A moonshine plant at Zortman was cleaned out by sheriff’s officers.

A student council had been organized at the Malta school. Representatives elected from the various classes were Dagney Hanson and Cecil Bigwood (seniors); Loy Rader and Elmer Hendrickson (juniors); Tressa Verzatt and Lochiel Edwards (sophomores), and freshmen Catherine Mead and Ray Veseth.

Harry A. Vagg of Saco had gone to visit his parents in Wales.

The Long X and UL cattle outfits, which had been holding about 1,000 beef cattle in the vicinity of Malta awaiting stock cars, turned the stock back on the range.

Miss Divilo Ebaugh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ebaugh, and Frank Guinn were married in the home of the bride.

R. M. Trafton suffered severe cuts and bruises when he was dragged head-first out of his buckboard when a bolt dropped from the wagon pole and his team jumped ahead, dragging him a short distance.

The Catholic Ladies Altar Society realized $307.75 from a bazaar which was declared a huge success. Baby Nellie Dunbar was awarded a silver cup as the most popular baby in Malta.
