Though he had passed away in May, the legacy that Johnny Richardson left behind as Salvation Army bell ringer will continue. The Malta Key Club took the project on and will accept donations in their kettle pot.

“Coming home…” was Katie (Smith) and Mike Lamoreau and their daughter, Sadie. They had been living in Oregon.

The entire Dodson staff, students and employees prepared letters to send to Zach Cole, who is in the service in Afghanistan as a Warrant Officer. He shared the greetings with his unit to assure they were getting mail and Christmas presents.

New head coach for the Malta M-ette basketball team, Nate Hammond, heads into the season with only one senior and one starter from last year.

Montana authors Ken Overcast and Gary Wilson will be on hand, signing copies of their new books, at the Phillips County Museum as part of the annual Festival of Trees.

The Mortenson Four, Riley, Raina, Pierce and Parker, received Champion of Champion Jackets for their hard work and dedication to the County 4-H program. All four of their sheep projects were champions.

Small in numbers, as usual, Coyote basketball Coach Wes KillEagle, Jr. is optimistic. Returning seniors Nick Bear, Jesse Stephens and Travis Scheffelmaer will lead the team.

Boys’ basketball coach David Costin, said coming back as the Class B Champions, will depend greatly on returning starter, Zach Handley, a prolific scorer and rebounder.

In an effort to bring jobs, the PhillCo Economic Growth Council is working on bringing a training program where persons can do medical transcription from their homes.

There was little the fire crews from Malta could do by the time they reached the East Loring Hutterite Colony to squelch a blaze which destroyed a large storage building. Apparently an electrical fire started the fire, which also destroyed some lumber stored in the shed as well.

District Court sentenced three men in their role in burglarizing and vandalizing two cabins and the Buffalo Barn at the Sleeping Buffalo. David Kelly and Joshua Bunk of Glasgow and Nathan Sonsteng of Billings were given deferred sentences. Restitution in the amount of $10,000 was ordered for Sonsteng and Bunk.

Christopher Schwenke received six years’ probation for burglarizing the Short Stop. He was ordered to pay restitution to the Short Stop and Riverside Motel. For issuing 33 bad checks, in Malta and Havre, he was ordered to pay $1,600 restitution, and was placed on six years’ probation.

Finally, the court continued the sentencing of Randal Farrah until Jan. 11, 1999; he had pled guilty in September, to one count of sexual intercourse without consent, a felony.

Dr. Robert Wiprud, former physician in Malta, died of a massive heart attack. He was in medical practice with Dr. Daniel Molloy in Malta at one time.

New directors on the Phillips County Hospital Board, Kathleen Lumsden and Darryl Seeley, were welcomed as the board reorganized. Art Lundstrom was elected as chairman. The board heard from Steph Denham, Financial Director, that the hospital and clinic have been running in the red over the past six months; they have lost $165,841 over that period.

Amanda Frank, a 17 year old teenager from Malta, was cited by MHP Ralph Atchley for careless driving following an accident in which her eight-month-old child, riding in the back seat of the vehicle escaped injury. She was driving with a blood alcohol content of .02 at the time of the incident. She attempted to pass a school bus and lost control, throwing rocks up and breaking three windows. The car skipped across the canal and rolled over.

Nov. 29, 1973

Graveside rites were held Wednesday morning at the Malta Cemetery for Donna Lee Erickson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Erickson of Saco. The baby was stillborn in Glasgow on Nov. 24th.

Marlene Hanson, of Saco, was crowned the1974 Junior Miss at the conclusion of the 12th annual pageant held at the High School. She also won the Miss Congeniality and Scholastic trophy.

The Malta City Council discussed replacement of trees in the city park, flooding the skating rink and shoveling of sidewalks at property the city owns. A bid for a new police car from Dobson Motors was accepted with a trade-in of $1,300.

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Lake were honored at their 60th wedding anniversary at the Lutheran Church.

Lynn Simonson, Alan Wasson and Lyle Erickson left Saturday morning to go to Ft. Collins to attend veterinarian school.

A basketball game against the Lewistown Eagles marked the Mustangs entry into the Class A basketball ranks.

The Mustang wrestlers triumphed over the Wolf Point Wolves on Saturday night, with a score of 43-16. Successful matches were won by Tim Long, Mike Schumacher, Chris Barthelmess, Nick Cebulski, Steve Baeth, Dwain Hould, Doug Paulson, Pete Lumsden and Al VanHoudt.

Dec. 2, 1948

Adolph Solvie, 48, superintendent at the Saco schools for the past seven years, died in his home Wednesday of a heart ailment. Funeral services will be held on Saturday and the body will be taken to the family plot in Cyrus, Minn. for burial.

Last Friday, night Vern M. Azure of Zortman stole Louis Henry’s car in Malta. On Wednesday he was on his way to serve out a two-year sentence for the crime.

A statewide drive for funds to keep the famed paintings of Charles M. Russell, late cowboy artist, in Montana soon will begin, Sid Willis said in Great Falls Tuesday.

The Mission Bulldogs of St. Ignatius high school won the Montana class C six-man football championship decisively 40 to 8 from Dodson Coyotes of Phillips County Thanksgiving afternoon.

A gang of six men and two women was taken into custody in Havre on warrant charging them with the robbery of 26 banks in the state.

Louis Nybo had set up a radio at the Standard garage and the place was one of the most popular in town on an evening.

Sheriff Wolfe had received a letter from Midale signed by 30 residents of the community who complimented him on ridding the country of stills and moonshiners.

John Rhode was found frozen to death on Cemetery Hill within sight of the town of Glasgow.

B. D. Phillips had recovered a band of 600 wethers which had escaped from a herder two months previously. The sheep were found north of Saco.
