MMS Wrestling Finishes Year in Glasgow

Twenty-two Malta Middle School wrestlers competed in the last tournament of the season. The last tournament was held at Glasgow on Saturday, Dec 16 with Baker, Circle, Glasgow, Glendive, Malta, Poplar, Sidney and Wolf Point competing.

Wrestlers finishing fourth with a 0-3 record for the day were Hudson Simons, Amus Blunt, Karsten Davis, Kaiden Tharp, Trent Blunt and Beau Nelson. Their records do not reflect on their performance or effort. The competition was tough and they fought hard with a good attitude. Beau Nelson shares the Most Exciting Match Award this week for his effort vs. a Sidney opponent even though it ended in a loss.

Most of the team finished third in this tournament. Third placers were Tyrel Turnsplenty, Corby Mears, Hayden Roberts, Beau Merriman, Beckett Squires, Braun Sims, Cameron Spencer, Keavin Simser, Cord Newman and Kasen Jones. All but one wrestler had a 1-2 record in this group. Hayden Roberts had a 2-1 record in a very competitive weight class where everyone in the weight class had one loss. Cameron Spencer wins the Quick Pin Award for his pin of :12.

Malta's lone second placer was Kallie LaBrie. Kallie was 2-1, winning by a decision and a pin. She lost by major decision. Kallie finished the season with two impressive wins and wrestled well in her loss with a much-improved performance against a Glasgow opponent.

The five champions on Saturday were Colby Wright, Lyla Warren, Steeler Blunt, Zander Fuller and Trevor Knowles. Colby won two matches by pin and one by major decision, dominating his weight class. Lyla Warren was 2-0 on the day with another victory over her Glasgow rival. Lyla shares the Most Exciting Match Award for her effort in the Glasgow match. Lyla turned her opponent in the third period and pulled out a 2-1 win. Zander Fuller dominated his weight class with three pins. Zander had pins in 27, 28 and 27 seconds. Steeler Blunt finished the year with a 13-match win streak. Steeler started the year at 0-6 and finished the year at 13-6. Trevor Knowles is the Wrestler of the Week. Trevor pinned a tough Sidney opponent in the first period, then pinned his Glasgow rival in the first period. Trevor and the Glasgow wrestler have been trading wins all season but Trevor won the last one.

The top five wrestlers with the most wins on the season are as follows: Lyla Warren – 11, Beau Nelson – 12, Steeler Blunt – 13, Corby Mears and Kallie LaBrie – 14 and Braun Sims – 18. Lyla and Beau are 5th graders and it is impressive that they can make this list.

Congratulations to these wrestlers and all the team for all their improvement this year. We have seen an improvement in technique and attitude this year, such as fighting off our back and not giving up during a match. Thanks to all the parents for their support in making this a successful season.
