Senior Zach Handley scored 28 points-- 13 of them in the third period when he canned a trio of treys-- to lead Malta to a 66-39 home-court win over the Harlem Wildcats.

Malta resident Billy Froman had a winter thrill when he landed a 33-inch long walleye at Nelson Reservoir using tip-ups. The fish weighed 14.5 pounds.

Behind his humble, reverend-like appearance, funeral director Greg Kirkwood harbors a not-so-secret desire. He likes to go fast. He is the President of the Phillips County Motorsports Inc., which holds races at the track south of town.

Mayor Shyla Jones provided the Oath of Office to City Council members David Rummel and Bonnie Wiederrick. The Mayor took the oath to her office following her re-election, provided by City Clerk Carolyn Schmoeckel.

Dodson Coyote sophomore Jessica Parker was a force, scoring 28 of the team points in their dominant 78-56 victory against the Lady Bearcubs. She also had 17 rebounds, giving her a double-double for the night. Junior Jenessa Talks Different had 26 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals, was four for six from the three-point line, converted two buckets in which she was fouled, and proceeded to sink the free throws that accompanied.

Malta Chamber of Commerce organizer Don Nevrivy reported the annual Christmas Scrip program ended up loaning out about $285,000 in zero-interest loans. This amount was about 14 percent over the previous year. The fact that the shopping season was a week shorter than last year may have been a contributing factor.

Dixie Moore, a 24-year employee of the Phillips County Medical Center, was honored as Employee of the Quarter.

Dave and Sharon Miller moved from Havre to Malta after purchasing the Dairy Queen. They will spend three weeks in late January attending a Dairy Queen-sponsored school in Minnesota for independent owners. “Then we’ll be smarter,” quipped Dave.

Barbara Hould was honored with an open house at the courthouse to celebrate her 13 years of service to the public in the Phillips Country Treasurer’s office.

Harry and Stella Fauth announce the engagement of their daughter, Melodee to Sean (Hansonl) Kavannaugh, son of Virginia Thomson. A wedding is planned for June 4.

Jan Waltner Johnson, a local chemical dependency counselor, found herself on the other side, needing help herself when she was diagnosed with mantel cell lymphoma in the leukemia stage.

Cold weather didn’t stop 108 4-H youth from across the county from attending Miscellaneous Judging. Senior division winners were Joanna Skiff, Christina Wiedderich and Alex Anderson. Advanced Junior class winners were Cindi Hungerford, Tolen Whaley and Patrick Menge. The youngest group to participate were the Beginning Juniors with Megan Skiff, Mitch Ereaux and Chancey Watson winning the event.

Nathan Fried and Lindsey Lang reigned as king and queen of the annual Malta High School Snow Ball held on Dec. 30 at the GN.

Orella Olson, Iva Sims and Sadie Pope were busy creating a quilt for the auction for the Allan Crowder family following a fire that destroyed their home. The ladies are residents of the new Country Home.

A marriage license was issued to Richard Wilke and Jill MacMurdo, both of Malta.

Phillips County 3C teams will meet this weekend and the Saco Panthers will see action from Jeff Freeman, Tom Sunford and Brad Marshall’s leadership. Tanner Anderson, Bryan Simanton and Bjorn Milz have led the Penguins, and Zach Cole, Eddie Hawley and Zane Gray have led the Coyotes.

Mustang basketball action saw the honor of Chairman of the Boards going to LD Matthews; and Rick Fuzesy won the Mr. Hustle award, getting 11 points, four steals, two rebounds, and two assists.

County elected officials were sworn in on Dec. 31 by Judge John McKeon. Taking the oath were Treasurer Jean Mavencamp, County Supt. Gary Baden, Sheriff Gene Peigneux, Clerk and Recorder Laurel Hines, Commissioner Carol Kienenberger, Deputy Treasurer Rita Kirkaldie, Deputy Supt. Sue Kron, Deputy County Attorney Dan O’Brien, Under Sheriff Tom Miller and Deputy Clerk Suzanne Koss. County Attorney Ed Amestoy was sworn in several days earlier.

Tom Watson was elected as State Director on the Montana Fiddler’s Board. He was also elected as a director on the District Board.

The County commissioners Monday elected Francis Jacobs to serve as chairman for the coming year. He succeeds Carol Kienenberger who has served as chairman for the last two years.

Jake Wiederrick and Bud Hasler of the Wagon Train organization, provided bobsled rides at Trafton Park. It was reported they had good crowds on hand for the rides.

Fourteen members of the Malta Boxing Club took part in the meet in Chinook on Saturday. The outstanding bout of the night was when Jean Green earned a unanimous decision over Dan Wall of Lewistown in the heavyweight division. The team brought home 14 trophies, including nine first places. Winning matches were Clark Darrah, Kip Kelly, Jeff Darrah, Larry Smith, Al Snider, Doug Simanton, Dave Schwartz, and Dexter Henry.

Also competing were Clyde Darrah, Curt Reynolds, Tim Eklund and Dirk Henry.

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Dopp were honored on their 60th wedding anniversary by family and friends.

Daylight saving time goes into effect this Sunday, January 6. Move your clocks ahead one hour when you retire Saturday night.

The 27th annual Old Time Dance and Fiddlers Contest sponsored by the VFW Post will be held Feb. 9 and 10, according to Dixon Grant, chairman.

Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Johnston were honored as they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary, hosted by their family.

Phillips County brought in a new year and the first baby of the new year was born January 1st. A daughter, Shannon Nichole, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Sid Hould, weighing eight pounds, five and one-quarter ounces. She joins a sister, Janine, age one.

The US Postal Service said it will delay the increase scheduled for Jan. 5 until March 2. That means the price of mailing a first-class letter will remain eight cents for another two months before going up to a dime.

Born at the Malta hospital on Monday, Jan. 10, a daughter Ina Claire, to Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Munson.

Born at the Agency hospital on January 4, a daughter, to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Langford. Grandmother Ereaux is keeping house and caring for the other children while their mother is in the hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. G.V. Knudsen gave a New Year's party at their home Saturday evening. Those present were Mrs. Mary Bibeau and her son, Louie, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Taylor, and Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Taylor and son, Bob. Several tables of whist were enjoyed and a delicious lunch was served at midnight.

Thursday night’s heavy wind storm laid low several telephone poles.
