The Villa Theatre is scheduled to open on Feb. 8, under new ownership. Vicki and Jim Truelove, the new owners signed the paperwork to become the owners of the 60-year-old business.

After 25 years as the Malta Mustang defensive coordinator and one year as head coach, Tad Schye has stepped down from his spot on the coaching staff.

The life membership in the Malta 4067 VFW Post had its biggest boost when seven members of the Cummings family became life members. They include Raymond, Robert, Don, Richard, Thomas, James and Bruce. They join N. J. Cummings and Everett. The Cummings family is the largest in Montana holding life memberships and is also believed to be the largest in the United States.

Walter Ozark, Lexie Haynes and Jim Murdock ventured over 560 miles to Belvidere, South Dakota to deliver 20 head of Montana-bred cows and heifers to young ranchers, Frank and Toni Carlson and Colter and Abbi Carlson, who lost 80 plus head of livestock in the Atlas storm in October. The young ranchers are nephews of Charlie and Kathleen (Murdock) Carlson of Kadoka, South Dakota.

Nolan Simanton grabbed a 6-3 tournament win last week at the Choteau Classic Wrestling Tournament after defeating Conrad’s Garrett Moritz who defeated him just a week ago in Cut Bank for that tournament’s title. Kelin King came away with a second-place win.

The Saco-Whitewater Lady Panthers remain undefeated, 11-0, after defeating Nashua and Scobey over the weekend. Tatum Moore had 17 points, three treys and three steals in the Scobey game.

Lynn Cummings, who had been paralyzed in a truck accident in 1977, an accomplished violin and guitar player, had died at his home of natural causes.

Posing for a four-generation photo were great-grandmother, Louise LaBrie, grandfather, Corky LaBrie, father, Cory LaBrie and mother Monica LaBrie and son, grandson and great-grandson son.

The Sheriff’s office was investigating damage and vandalism in Saco, where someone was shooting out the streetlights with a pellet gun for the last several weeks. Also, they were investigating the burglary at the home of Martin Campbell in Malta on Jan. 12, resulting in the theft of approximately $465 from the residence.

The Malta City Council has indicated it may seek a portion of the Hard Rock Trust administered by county commissioners.

Malta area resident Allen Crowder said he didn’t know just how many friends he really had until the benefit auction last Saturday. Organizers deposited $10,617.80 from the fundraiser. Also donated were five tons of hay, 100 bushels of spring wheat and household items.

Efforts of the Dodson School to receive $164,000 in federal impact funds for the district were underway. The application for the funds had been sent to the wrong address and never considered.

Jaci Hawley and Taylor Werk were selected as Dodson High School’s Student of the Month.

Julie Blunt, daughter of LaRae and Troy Blunt, has been admitted to North Dakota State University “With Distinction.” She plans to major in pharmacy at NDSU in the fall of 1999. Distinction means that NDSU is acknowledging Blunt as an honor student.

Sharon Kindle was elected to head the Foundation for Agriculture Education and Development (FAED), the educational non-profit arm of Women Involved in Farm Economics (WIFE).

“If you build it, they will come” was the whispered promise in the movie “Field of Dreams.” The phrase might be the whisper of the locals as Malta High School was selected to host back-to-back action of the boy’s district and divisional basketball tournaments.

Girls’ volleyball coach Pat Sargent said of his team’s four-game loss to the Plentywood Wildcats, “There were times we played not to lose and didn’t play to win.” He cited Brikotah Kelly for getting the ball over the net, Kaydee Carnahan for defensive efforts, and senior Sarah Faaborg for a great job of blocking at the net.

Mrs. Harold Schmoeckel was presented with her 25-year pin at the VFW meeting.

A proposed project to expand the Malta Nursing Home will be reviewed at a meeting in Wolf Point. The project is to add 14 beds to the existing unit. Persons who would like to have a comment on the project can call collect to Sandra Nicholson, phone number 482-3035.

The Malta wrestlers lost a non-conference match to Glasgow 41-15 over the weekend. The mat men caught fire to shut the Chinook Beeters out 61-0 behind pins from Tim Long, Dennis Siegle, Chris Barthelmess, Nick Cebulski, Dean Hasler, Doug Paulson and Marlin Cilz.

Jean Green is scheduled to fight the main heavyweight matches in Lewistown on Saturday according to Malta boxing coach Den Snider. He will meet Dan Wall, who he beat earlier this year.

Re-elected directors of the First Security Bank at the annual stockholders meeting were Willis McKeon, Dan Nicholson, Paul Kropp, Jack Kelly (president), Ross Robinson, Keith Stine, Roger Simonson and Leslie Eskildsen. At the end of its second year, the bank showed assets at $4,371,423.68 which is up from $2,828,571.46 last year.

George Hoynes was installed as worshipful master of the Malta Lodge, AF&AM at the Masonic Temple.

Jan. 20, 1949

The Malta Lutheran Church was the scene of a pretty wedding on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 15, at 4 o’clock when Marjene Orahood became the bride of Floyd Carnahan. She was attended by Mrs. Aaron Chase and Dorothy Armstrong. His attendants were John Clausen and Wesley Orahood, and Gene Carnahan and Jerry Maloney served as ushers.

Stanford J. Boothe enlisted in the Navy on January 11th for a term of one year. After a three-month training in San Diego, Calif., he will be allowed 12 days leave to visit home.

Nordlund with 25 points and Munson with 13 led Dodson to a 51-37 win from Harlem’s basketball team at Harlem on Saturday. NezPerce was high for the losers with 14 points.

Here’s your invite to the Hard Time Dance on Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Log Cabin Inn in Zortman. Prizes for the best-dressed couple. Good music. Good time.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hanson provided an unqualified endorsement of the March of Dimes, from the standpoint of care given to their daughter, Patsy.

The Saco Panthers defeated the Nashua Porcupines at the Civic Center in Glasgow in a close-contested battle. The game was off to a fast start with each team checking the other so closely that not much headway was made. Nashua scored first on a free throw. At the third quarter and final whistle, the score was tied. In a three-minute overtime, Saco made three points and Nashua one. High point man was Scheele.

Jim Caves and Don Scheele were elected co-captains of the team during the week.

Judge Charles N. Pray had been named to the federal bench in Montana by President Calvin Coolidge.

The county had purchased the money safe formerly used by the defunct Bowdoin State Bank and had placed it in Treasurer Dave Dutro’s office to keep tax receipts safe.

A delegation composed of John Survant, Louis Skala, Grover Wait, Henry Hedges and H. G. Robinson headed for Great Falls to reason with the Homestake Oil Company. The local men, all officials in the Phillips County Oil and Gas Company, thought the development of oil and gas on the Bowdoin Dome was going ahead at too slow a rate.

About the only sensational news of the week was a Chinook wind that warmed up things after a severe cold snap.

Dr. George W. Clay made a trip to Ashfield to call professionally upon Mrs. S. S. Copeland who was very ill and Glasgow sportsmen were making plans to stock the Milk River valley with pheasants.
