For three years, the City has been chasing the elusive “phantom” smell that plagues the downtown area. It is a mystery as to the cause or general location; they just know something is rotten in…downtown Malta.

The Alpha Zeta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma hosted an awards program for their annual creative writing contest. This year’s essay topic was “volunteerism.” The third and fourth grade winners were: Addy Anderson, Kirsta Meisdalen, Nikki Nicholson, Brylee French, Emma Harms, Kevin Missildine, Aiden Kaasa, Trinity Tramell, Naylene Winkle and Ashton Smith.

Malta School Board member Mark Knudsen presented former Phillips County News Owner, Publisher and Editor Curtis Starr the Bronze Mustang Award for his dedication to education over the past 30 years.

The Phillips County Commissioners voted to upgrade several motor graders. The cost of a new 160M2 model of Cat Graders is $304,470. The items will come out of the Federal Mineral Royalties.

Justinn Marshall of Saco was presented with the Carol C. Sloan Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $3,000. She rodeos for The University of Western in Dillon.

Rosemary Veseth was one of the Malta Dirt Daubers Garden Club members that assisted at the Boys and Girls Club teaching the kids how to grow self-watering plants.

Whitewater’s Kourtney Simonson fared well in her debut of the 800-meter run, placing second. Jeret Warren garnished all of the six points for the boys’ team.

Malta Track Coach Tad Schye was pleased with the girls placing fourth and the boys coming in seventh at the Glasgow meet.

Highlighted in the Senior Spotlight was Lila Raymond. She said her favorite holiday is Christmas, and her favorite meal is Thanksgiving. Lila is a retired teacher who taught in Dodson and Malta.

Ashley Hammond and Jacob Obie reigned as queen and king of the 1999 Whitewater Prom.

Two-year-old Leila Mecklenberg was listed in stable condition in a Salt Lake City hospital. She had been pulled from the canal waters by her home in Wagner and was flown out.

Nathan Fried (Wide Receiver), Rick Fuzesy (Linebacker), and Anthony Perry (Offensive Tackle) were honored at the Player Recognition Banquet. Rocky Erickson was the guest speaker.

Diann Hanson’s grandmother, Zettie Castleberry of Glasgow, was featured on the occasion of her 100th birthday. Her life story, hardships, and life as it was, was told by her older brother.

Army Specialist Chad L. Robinson has graduated from the petroleum supply specialist course in Fort Lee, Petersburg, Va.

A new sewer system in Whitewater was estimated to cost almost a million dollars.

The American Legion Post in Saco will host the annual Spring District No. 2 meeting on Saturday. There are approximately 500 Legionnaires in the 10 Posts of the north-central district.

Two persons with Phillips County addresses are listed among the names of 3,986 delinquent parents owing child support.

With only 36 percent of voters turning out, the mill levy for the Malta School failed. Bruce Hould was re-elected to the school board, while Steve Taylor defeated Kevin Salsbery and was elected.

Mrs. Penny Lind, play advisor for “Stacks of Wax,” added a candlelight dinner to the Junior High production being planned.

Bill Waters, State Farm Insurance Agent, was retiring after many years as the agent. Lonnie Link is succeeding him.

District Court announced the list of jurors who had been summoned as perspective jurors with three cases set for trial.

Adrian Doucette won the championship in the wrestling in the 110-pound midget division at the State AAU tourney held in Billings on Saturday and Sunday.

Patti Haser has been placed on the 1974 winter quarter honor roll at Northern Montana College with straight A’s. Other Malta students listed were Fred Perry, Charles Johnson, Charles Lucas, Erma Luedtike, Dennis Haser and Lance Ivanish. Also listed was Troy Blunt from Regina.

Karl and Jan Harms were finishing up last-minute details on the new floral shop they were opening. A grand opening was set for April 7th and free flowers and a grand prize would be given away.

Cliff Rustad became the third candidate to throw his name in the hat as a candidate for Phillips County Sheriff. He joins incumbent Pete Messerly and Ralph Young for the position.

A semi-trailer with livestock was involved in an accident early Sunday morning. Tommy Duncan of Zortman was driving a truck owned by William Nace of Turner. Nace was a passenger in the truck, as was Lyle Jones. They were headed south and failed to negotiate a left-hand turn. The truck went off the right side of the road and rolled over on its side.

Members of the Malta Boxing Club took part in the State AAU Junior Olympic Boxing Tournament over the weekend, and returned home with two state champions, Dirk Henry and Al Snider. The team was also awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy at the tourney.

Members of the Park Board met for their monthly meeting and found that vandalism had taken a toll on Trafton Park during the fall and winter. Young trees had been run over by vehicles, breaking them down. See-saw boards had been wrenched off and used to get vehicles free that were stuck off the park trails. Swing seats and chains were down, some missing.

Fred Phillips passed away at the Mary Survant Hospital after an extended illness. He had worked on ranches near Malta and Zortman for many years and had cooked in restaurants. From San José, California, he was about 74 years old.

A graduate of Malta High School, and Montana State College, Raymond Goertz, will be seen shortly in “March of Time,” and is heralded as the inventor of a remote control mechanical device that is “the most advanced development of its kind thus far achieved,” according to word received by Dr. A. J. M. Johnson, head of the physics department at Montana State College. The manipulator imitates seven motions of the human hands that are employed in grasping, lifting, moving and turning objects.

Malta nurse, Eugenia Taylor, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Ervin Taylor, has joined the Sacred Heart School of Nursing faculty at Havre. She served in the Army Nurse Corps in 1945 and 1946 and recently received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.

Willis McKeon, born in Anaconda, has entered the practice of law in the city of Malta with offices upstairs in the old First State Bank Building.

Miss Dorothy Abbott of East Moline, Illinois, and Harold Miller of Dodson, were married in a beautiful candlelight ceremony at the Free Methodist Church in Rock Island, Illinois.

Mr. And Mrs. C. G. King have bought the Malta Flower Shop from Robert Hurley. They have already taken possession of and will specialize in furnishing potted plants and cut flowers for occasions.

Ramona Disserly of Wolf Point is Sheriff Frank Partridge’s guest these days awaiting disposition of a forgery charge. The woman is accused of signing the name of a Wolf Point man on checks offered a Malta service station operator. She is being held under a bond of $2,000. The prisoner told Sheriff Partridge she was on a honeymoon trip to Malta. The husband is said to be trying to raise the cash with which to make good the forged checks.
