The Phillips County Sheriff’s Office and Agents from the Tri-Agency Drug Task Force executed a search warrant on the residence of Malanie Miller in Malta. She was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of Dangerous Drugs (Felony) with the Intent to Distribute (Felony), Criminal Child Endangerment (Felony), Criminal Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Misdemeanor). She was held on $100,000 bond.

Five candidates have filed for two positions on the Malta School Board. Running for a position are Beth Welch, Gaelen Curtis, Thayne Mackay, Jamie Jones and Rockland J. Tollefson.

Malta Public Schools will be hosting a Retirement Party for ten retiring staff members: Mrs. Joy Bebee, Ms. Kathie Cary, Mrs. Mardy Demarais, Mr. Kent Gordon, Mrs. Darlene Kolczak, Mr. Terry Lindgren, Mrs. Barb Otteson, Mr. Andy Otteson, Mr. Steve Schumacher, and Mr. Vic Schumacher. A retirement party will be April 26th from 2-4 p.m. at the High School Cafeteria.

Spotlighted as the person in the Senior Spotlight was Malta’s retired Maytag Repairman Man, John Deere parts salesman and Hardware man, Si (aka Dwayne Simanton), who stated his favorites as Christmas and turkey dinner. He raised the bar when he stated his favorite athlete was Zach Handley.

People featured in the weekly Street Talk were Alice Hofer, Al Minugh and Rose Hawkins.

Kourtney Simonson was selected as the Girls State Delegate. She will represent Malta’s American Legion Auxiliary in Helena for a week at the gathering.

Five youth from across Phillips County presented a demonstration, or an illustrated talk, at Demonstration Day. Senior member, Riley Mortenson won first. Also participating were Raina Mortenson, Pierce Mortenson, Parker Mortenson and Danie Rhodes.

“I think I did pretty darn good again,” said Whitewater’s Jeret Warren. Running with an injured turf toe, he was the only gentleman Penguin to score, he scored all eight team points by his lonesome, outscoring four other teams. The meet was in Havre.

Volunteers helped the Malta 4-H Club to deliver 358 Pizza Kits. Part of the funds raised will go to Scotty Moore to help with medical expenses.

Sixth grader, Catherine Warren, of Dodson, won a trip to the National Invention Society Competition in Kansas City, MO. She developed The Cow Calving Kit. Clayton KillEagle’s invention, The Pet Picker-Upper, placed in the top 20 nationwide, earning him $50.

The United States Achievement Academy announced that Trenton Dovre of Malta, has been named a United States National Award winner in science. The award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. The Academy recognizes fewer than 10% of all high school students. He was nominated by his teacher, Mardy Demarais.

Gaylord and Judy Olson of Malta announced the engagement of their son, Bradley, to Goldie Lynn Plymale, of Mt. View, Wyoming. A June 5 wedding is planned.

Larry Jackson, 21, was arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault after sheriff’s deputies responded to a fight outside a Dodson business. Justice of the Peace Gayle Stahl set bail at $50,000 and bound him over to district court for trial. Jackson was charged with kicking Jeremy King, 20, in the face and beating him and two others with a pool stick and attempting to crush King’s head with a large rock.

Helen Wiederrick was to be the guest of honor on her 80th birthday; she was to be honored at the Little White Church with an open house.

Ken Blunt, local rancher, chairman of the Phillips County Prairie Ecosystem Action Council, told the PCN that the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) had agreed to extend the public input time for comments of the proposed rules for listing the mountain plover on the endangered species.

Phillips County Deputy Youth Probation Officer Bob Michael has submitted his resignation Effective June 30, saying simply, “There’s a lot of things I want to do.”

Top students from Saco High School will attend the Business Professional of American (BPA) 1999 National Leadership Conference in Philadelphia April 21-26. Attending will be chapter members, Brooke Beadle, Erica DePuydt, Katy Forbes, Christina Wiederrich, and Randi Plouffe will join over 4,000 other delegates to compete in business skill competitions.

After a six-year absence, the Tom and Loretta Anderson family of Malta returned to the Glasgow stockyards for their Charolais Bull Production Sale. The top-selling bull went for $3,600.

Apr. 11, 1974

A coroner’s inquest into the death of Vernon Chase is set for Friday, in the court room of the courthouse. Chase died in March following a shooting the previous day when he was shot in the leg. Richard Kalal of Zortman has been charged with aggravated assault in the case and is free on $10,000 bond.

The special levies for the Malta public schools passed by a large majority at the election last Saturday. Rodney Kroon was re-elected to a three-year term as a trustee.

The City of Malta is asking for your help in cleaning up the town by removing junked and abandoned vehicles from the streets. Tickets will be issued for

violators.

B. J. Goodheart announced he has decided not to run for re-election to the Montana Senate. As a bank officer at the First Security Bank in Malta, he said he could not afford to take the time from the office to campaign and spend the time needed in Helena.

Gordon Watson, Phillips County weed district supervisor, will assume additional duties as the district mosquito supervisor, it was announced.

Cpl. Tom Appelhans of Dodson, who was killed on an air mission over Italy on December 19, 1945, was buried April 12 in Arlington Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Attending the services were his mother, Mrs. Joe Appelhans, his widow, Marie Appelhans, and daughter, LaDonna. They were escorted to the Arlington cemetery by Rep. Mike Mansfield’s private car.

Vital statistics included, birth - a son to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Welch, deaths - Howard Spencer, 79, of Malta. A marriage license was issued to Winston Mitchell, 26, and Lucille LaBorn, 22, both of Landusky.

At the Hagen Grounds there would be several jackpots in both bareback and bronc riding; appearing would be Sonny Oxarart, Ernest Demarais, Lloyd Trottier and Blair Goins.

The Senior Play, “January Thaw” was set for two nights, with curtain rising at 8:15 p.m. each night.

The body of Staff Sergeant Michael Short, who was killed in Germany on April 14, 1945, will be returned to Malta this week for burial. He is survived by his father, John Short of Malta, and his mother, Delia Short, a brother and sister all of Harlem.

The remains of Pfc. Benjamin Chopwood, son of Mrs. Lucille Chopwood of Lodgepole, will arrive in Malta Friday with services on Saturday in Lodgepole. He was a casualty of World War II. Services will be at 2 p.m.; members of the VFW are to meet with Clarence Mikkelson at the Club at 11 a.m. and those who have cars are asked to bring them.

Funeral services for Howard Spencer, 79, were held at the Little White Church with Elders Newton and Haderlie of the Church of the Latter-day Saints officiating.

Kenneth Murray, at 17 years of age, had become Montana’s youngest registered pharmacist. He was one of five who passed the exams out of a candidate group of 24 and was a qualified pharmacist before he had completed his college course in Missoula.

Twin daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Nybo.

Nelson Gallinger had struck a flowing artesian well at 512 feet, on his Missouri River ranch. The flow was measured at 5 gallons per minute and was deemed plentiful for ranch purposes.

Continued reports of gambling in various parts of Montana had brought the attorney general out of his lair with a warning letter to all county attorneys saying he would hold them responsible for law enforcement and if they failed, he would bring action against them for malfeasance in office. As a result of this manifesto, said the Enterprise, “the tiger is hiding in many places where he was wont to frisk in the open.”

Lyman Barnes, besides farming 27 acres, was in the chicken business rather heavily, with 230 head in his coops and 22 hens about to lamb. He also had an incubator full of ducks ready to pop almost any day.
