Everyone is welcome to come celebrate Ray and Arabelle McMullen’s 50th anniversary. Lunch will be served by the family at Trafton Park.

County Extension Agent Marko Manoukian was at the Malta Elementary School promoting Arbor Day and demonstrating planting of trees and shrubs.

Ronnie Erickson and Kyle Mitchell completed a film which will allow handicapped museum visitors to view the displays on the second floor. Their teacher is Delmer Henry.

Twelve members of the Malta Golf Team qualified for State. Heading to Butte for action are Garrett Zanto, Keenan VanWichen, Jase Galt, Eli Waters, Tyler Ost, with Cru Darrah as an alternate. The girls team consists of Tyanna Dunbar, Kristi Granlund, Cyra Mears, Taryn Shores, Kelsey Kuehn, and Serena Stine will be an alternate.

The Malta Trails, Inc. is excited to receive a $10,000 MDU Foundation grant to help build the Malta Trails System. Tony Boos, MDU Supervisor, presented the check.

Teacher Stacie Simanton and her third grade class literally went to “go fly a kite” as a reward for their accomplishments.

Teri Skiff was the lucky winner of the Minute-to-Win-It drawing at Albertsons.

Sheriff Scott Moran is asking voters to approve an additional $51,739.90 to the $98,300 that has been approved since 2002.

Shine the Senior Spotlight on Joe Eskildsen and you will learn that his favorite animal is a dog, “any kind of mutt.” He enjoys the 4th of July and his favorite song is “God Bless America;” the retired farmer and Navy veteran enjoys cribbage and farming.

Incumbent Galen Curtis received 461 votes to be re-elected to the Malta School Board and R. J. Tollefson received 564 to earn the other seat on the board.

Old man winter took one more pot shot at Phillips County, dumping rain that turned to snow, causing one-foot-high drifts along Highway 191 into the Little Rockies.

Two Wiener mobiles making a trek across the US and Canada stopped at a local gas station on their way to search for youngsters age three to 12 years old to sing the ditty song, “I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener…”

Recently elected officers for the VFW are Ron Allery, Post Commander; Sr. Vice, Marshall Kline; Jr. Vice, Bill Black; Jack Reynolds, Chaplain; Ernie Becker, Quartermaster; and Adjutant, Bill Jaynes. Fred Olson was named a 3-year trustee and Gopher Rasmussen, 2-year trustee.

Toni Hould, of Wagner, received her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology at the 89th annual commencement exercise at Carroll College in Helena.

Anthony Perry and Angela Roberts will lead the Class of 1999 at graduation exercises as valedictorian and salutatorian.

The Ken Cebulski Memorial Scholarship was awarded to April Ost of Whitewater and Melissa Cochell of Malta.

Sara Fear of Whitewater received the USAF ROTC scholarship. The scholarship covers full cost of tuition, textbooks, laboratory and incidental fees and a $150 monthly allowance through the academic year.

John Stewart, Jason Olson and Alisha Oxarart all placed at the rodeo in Bozeman to help the Western Montana College rodeo team win. Stewart earned a trip to the National College Finals rodeo.

Erik Faaborg was named a National Award Winner in Science. He was nominated by Mardi Demarais, a teacher at the high school.

MSU-Bozeman graduates from the area include Lara Wilson, Keenan Blunt, Kevin Lundstrom, Crystal Nessland and Rebecca Thompson.

Family and friends will gather at the GN for a potluck supper in honor of Eudell Lundman’s 80th birthday.

Answering the Street Talk question, “What do you think is happening to the moral standards of America?” Dean Kienenberger responded, “They are declining very rapidly. One of our fearless leaders is an example of what we don’t want happening.”

Mike Brady received a pin from his mathematics teacher, Steve Schumacher, for his top math score at Malta High School.

Boxing teams from Wolf Point, Lewistown, and Chinook will converge on Malta for a boxing smoker. The feature fight will be a heavyweight bout between Jean Green and Dan Wall of Lewistown, two very highly-rated fighters.

After a day of Earth Day cleanup and a picnic, a dance was held in the evening and Shaune Ereaux and Todd Smith were announced as queen and king of Earth Day.

In the primary election coming up, one of three candidates running for Sheriff will be chosen to oppose Newton E. Cummings, democratic candidate. Running are Pete Messerly, Cliff Rustad and Ralph Young.

In the Blue and White Courier, senior Chip Young was featured. His philosophy of life is, “Live It.” He plans to attend the U. S. Air Force Academy after graduation.

May 12-19 is National Nursing Home Week and local administrator, Jim Tavary, has activities and speakers coming to the Malta Nursing Home to share with the residents.

Thirteen Malta High School musicians will be attending the state music festival over the weekend.

Alfred R. Anderson, commissioner of agriculture of the state soil conservation committee, said of the recent precipitation, “The rain has meant millions of dollars to the farmers and ranchers, businessmen and industries in the state.”

A collection of about 135 guns, some of them dating back as far as 1795 has been disposed of by William J. Tressler to a California collector and dealer and his big collection of mounted big game trophies has been given to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Miss Fern Oxarart was chosen as the Malta representative to the Billings “Go Western” festival, being judged on the basis of horsemanship and beauty. Other candidates were Mary Demarais, Katherine Elliot, Lillian Grimsley and Doris Armington.

The bareback riding event was taken by Bill Evans after a beautiful ride on tough Hagen mount at the Hagen Jackpot Rodeo. Other contestants included Dave Matthews, Tweet Oxarart, Rocky Monroe, Jack Crowder, Lloyd Trottier, Sonny Oxarart, Cliff Mans, Blair Gogins and Leroy Glasser.

Miss Beth Holzhey and Robert Lawson were recently married. Miss Lila Kovach was bridesmaid and Gaylon Licht was bestman. The ceremony was witnessed by the bride’s parents. The bride will graduate with the class of 1949. The couple spent their honeymoon at Regina with the bride’s brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Mecklenberg.

Lewellen Boos, a Dodson high school junior, has been selected as delegate to Girls’ State by the Thomas P. Appelhans Post #65 Legion Auxiliary.

A public meeting called by Supt. Lesselyong last Sunday afternoon to discuss community desires in the matter of a new school building drew little response. Leaving out school officials and architects the “crowd” consisted of Dr. And Mrs. W. T. Williams.

The only one in Phillips county not happy with the grey skies pouring out much needed rain was Louie Perry, manager of the Malta club, known as the “Bucket of Blood.” He was wearing hip boots, wielding a broom that the US Navy would have been impressed with. The rain pouring down from the news office flowed into the club and some said the name should have been changed to the “Bucket of Water.”

A charge of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon has been filed against Mrs. Senie Jones, wife of “Tennessee” Jones, who the previous week had shot and seriously wounded Nan Spence, a housekeeper at the Jones farm. It was rumored that the ex-governor of Tennessee, a famous criminal lawyer, had offered to defend Mrs. Jones.

Dr. C. E. Blankenhorn had been named city health officer by Mayor A. F. Winkler. Other city appointments were T. J. Larson, secretary and superintendent of the water department; W. F. Robertson, street commissioner; Thomas Simanton, pound master, and E. J. Humphreys, garbage collector.

A marriage license had been issued to Manville Nelson and Alice Marshall, both of Saco.

Harry McConnel was plowing with two tractors, planning on planting 100 acre to corn on his farm at Wagner.

The Zortman Mercantile company with a capital stock of $5,000 had filed incorporation papers with the secretary of state.

“It is currently reported that the wife of a former well-known Missouri river rancher has flown the coop with the foreman, until recently, of another outfit.”

W. W. Jaycox, foreman of the Square outfit, visited Malta and said he could not remember when the country was badly in need of a good soaking.

“Dolly” Pierson had purchased the Hanley ranch three miles below town for $2,000.
