The children and grandchildren of Stanley “Pete” and Doris Wombold invite family and friends to join them in celebrating 50 years of marriage. The event is at the Senior Citizen Center.

Rex Williamson and Kooper Oxarart were among the youth who spent Monday through Wednesday at the annual Little Mustang basketball camp held at the “Old Gym” last week.

The First State Bank’s 12th Annual Car Show and PCMS Drag Races are offering a full weekend of “cars” and include a Poker Run. The weekend is a busy one.

A picture of Malta’s Greg Skiff preparing to set the PCMS track record - Hand Controls only - of 86.87 miles per hour, taken a couple of years ago, was featured as part of the enticement for the weekend of cars, wheels and speed.

Commissioner Lesley Robinson was sworn in as president of the Western Interstate Region (WIR), a caucus affiliated with the National Association of Counties (NACo.). She was sworn in at the meeting in Alaska.

The highway running east and west through town had new creatures lurking out by the Dinosaur Museum. The colorful dinosaurs were part of the event planned for the museum’s grand opening coming up.

Taylor Yates and Addam Hellie extend an invitation to their wedding at the Hellie Ranch in Loring, followed by a reception at the Stockman Terrace in Malta.

Malta’s Kirstin Skiff was crowned as the Phillips County Junior Miss before a packed auditorium at the Malta High School. She also earned the judge’s scholastic achievement, presence and composure portion of the judging. First runner-up is LeeAnn Pekovitch, who also won the fitness portion of the judging. Second runner-up is Leila Barnard, who won the panel judging portion of the event. Ashley Fried won the spirit award; Jessica Bruckner won the creative and performing arts portion of the judging.

Dodson Schools inducted four students into the National Honor Society at a banquet. Students selected were Tracie Overberg, Carly Wyse, Stacie Kline and Jaci Hawley.

Cheryl Kaasa and Brooke Beadle were named recipients of the OES/Yeates Scholarship, in the amount of $500 each.

Airman First Class Trevor Richardson was recently home on leave enroute to Minot, ND, where he will be stationed with the US Air Force. While home, Richardson played taps at the Memorial Day service in the Malta cemetery.

Commander Louis DePuydt, the color guard and firing squad presented a program at the Grandview Cemetery in Saco. Joy Linn, representing the DAR, said 87 flags had been placed on the graves of individuals who had served in the US Armed Forces.

The Senior of the Year reception honoring Henry Mulfinger was scheduled for June 13, from 2-4 p.m. at the Senior Citizen Center.

Jim Slade was the winner of the first annual Jack Brogan Memorial Golf Tournament held at the Marion Hills Golf Course.

Vital statistics include a marriage license issued to Wes Rogina, age 43, and Tammy Kolczak, age 36; both reside in Malta.

Carly Wyse and Shayne Bishop, along with their parents, Tammy and Scott Wyse and Eddie and Sherrill Bishop, announced their engagement. A wedding is planned for July 10.

The Malta High School weight room will be open from 7 a.m.-9 a.m. on Mondays-Thursday, and in the evenings from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. On Fridays, it will only be open in the mornings. It will be open for high school and college students and will be supervised at all openings.

Wesley and Renee Koss are the proud parents of a daughter, Kari Joy, born in Havre, MT.

Pie expert, Audrey Ulrich, shared her Rhubarb-Raspberry pie recipe, and her secret to no-spill baking - which was baking it in a BBQ grill.

The official grand opening of the new G-N Motor Hotel and Steakhouse will be on Saturday.

The grand opening of the Hi-Line Packing Company will be held Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a barbecued lunch served from 12 to 4 p.m. Owners of the business are Marvin Lundman and Leonard Leader. A new modern and large plant has been built.

Montana Highway Patrolmen Bill Cady and Rod Purkett report that there were no vehicle accidents in Phillips County during the month of May. The district office in Wolf Point told the patrolmen this is the first time in a number of years that the county has gone without a single accident.

Duane and Joyce Compton, owners of the GN Motor Hotel and Steakhouse are planning for the official grand opening of the new establishment. Free tap beer and Dutch lunch will be served after 2 p.m. and a special steak is planned for the dining room in the evening. Door prizes will be given away throughout the afternoon and evening. There will be a dance by the Blue Notes from Canada in the evening.

Buck Boyce of Havre was judged the best all-around cowboy competing in the two-day rodeo held at the rodeo grounds west of Malta, where 2,000 persons attended the performances. Boyce’s time in the steer wrestling event was seven seconds flat which is near the top time for such events. Ernie Demarais placed sixth in the saddle bronc event; in the cow riding, Boyce took first, and Tweet Oxarart, second.

Blackjack, poker and other card gambling games are taboo in Malta at present, but it is understood, that slot machines operating in non-profit social clubs are running as usual. Sheriff Partridge stated Tuesday that the slot machine question in the state is “so much up in the air at the present time that is not advisable to clamp down on the machines until the matter is settled in the state.” Sheriff Partridge said there is a question as to whether or not they are legal and that he is not in a position to decide the matter.

A freak accident occurred while the L. R. Morran family of the Phillips ranch were on a fishing trip on the Missouri River last Sunday. The reflection of the sun from a gallon jug of water in the back seat of their car started a fire in the upholstery which did an estimated $250 damage to the interior and trunk of the car. The car would have been totally destroyed if a tourist had not noticed the blaze and notified the Morrans.

Herb Kibler, a volunteer fireman, was severely burned when he fell over a live wire while fighting a fire on Cosner Street. Several other firemen received shocks trying to remove Kibler from the wire. The H. A. Byron blacksmith shop, a machine shed, and two warehouses owned by the Malta Mercantile company were destroyed in the $10,500 fire that broke out in the blacksmith shop at about 2 a.m. In the absence of Fire Chief George Tench, J. F. Murray took over.

Phillips County had a new industry. Charles Mead of Freewater was turning out egg crates at the rate of 2,000 a month.

Otis Misfeldt had broken his arm cranking a Ford.

John Ivanovitch completed his cistern and piped water into his basement and kitchen last week.

Charles Whitcomb, Zortman mining man, had brought 110 pounds of gold bullion to town as the output of a 12-day run at the mill.

Recent heavy rains had washed out three reservoirs on the B. D. Phillips ranch. Cuts from 50 to 100 feet wide had been washed in the dams and loss was estimated at $6,000.

The Cree and Gros Ventre had arrived in town with their spring haul of pulled wool and coyote skins. Trade was lively for a while and the Indians finally left with their purchases ranging from lumber wagons to umbrellas.

One sheepman reported a 22 percent loss in lambs as the result of excessive rainfall during the lambing season.

Mrs. William Dunbar, a resident of the community for 14 years, died following the birth of twin daughters. She was 39 years old. Funeral services were held in Malta. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and a native of Scotland.
