Panthers show improvement at Malta Invitational

The Saco Panthers faced a steep challenge at the Malta Athletic Club Invitational last Tuesday, April 21, facing athletes from 13 other C schools, four Class B schools and Class A's Havre.

Saco's Lady Panthers placed seventh after scoring 23 points at the meet. The boys failed to register points however both Chris DePuydt and Chandler Pippin set new personal bests at the meet.

Freshman Bailey Funk placed second in the long jump with a distance of 14-05.

Funk took third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 71.14 seconds. She took fourth in the pole vault after clearing 6-06, which was only six inches away from her personal best of 7-00.

"I just couldn't get the right form down," Funk said.

Funk just missed placing in the triple jump, taking eighth in the event with a length of 28-3. She took first at the Jean Dreikosen Memorial (JDM) in Glasgow last Saturday.

Alana Malmend took third in the high jump after clearing 4-04.

Challise Young posted a new personal best in the shot put, leaving a mark at 22-09.

Young posted a new personal best in the javelin throw (58-06), but would have an even further throw of 60-03 at the JDM. Young also had a throw of 46-01 in Discus at the Malta meet and 56-09 at the JDM.

For the boy's team Chris Depuydt posted a new personal best in the triple jump, with a leap of 34-11. He would take ninth in the event at the JDM after clearing 31-01.

DePuydt ran the 100 with a time of 14.04. He finished the 200 timed at 29.34. He also participated in the long jump and had a leap of 13-07.50.

Like his teammate, Chandler Pippin posted a new personal best in the triple jump leaving a mark of 32-01.

Pippin posted times of 14.74 in the 100, 32.04 in the 200 and 68.24 in the 400. He also had a leap of 11-02 in the long jump.
