PC 4-H Shooting Sports Awards recap

The Phillips County 4-H Shooting Sports held their annual pizza and awards ceremony on May 3rd at Stretch’s Banquet Room. There were 73 youth that participated in the program this year for a total of 95 disciplines. The youth shot for 8 weeks on the county level in archery, air rifle and air pistol disciplines.

There were 32 youth that participated in the 3P (prone, standing and kneeling) air rifle. There were two divisions of beginners (9 to 10 year olds) this year: The first year shooters results are as follows: 5th – Dre Oshio (1397), 4th – Isabelle Hallenberg (1409), 3rd – Dylan Brown (1593), 2nd – Gracie Carman (1611) and in 1st was Carson Ottinger with a score of 1710.00 All youth received medals. Most improved youth was Sydney Gibbs with an increase in the second four week period over the first four week period of 37.75 points. Other Beginning 1st year participants were: Hoyt Hellie, Colton Mears, Seth Siewing, James Waters, and Makiya Wilke. The next group of Beginners shooting their 2nd or 3rd year results are: 3rd – Spencer Gibbs (801), Kaden Bishop (922) and 1st Camryn Mears (1017). Most improved youth was Camryn Mears with an increase of 21.75 points.

Youth completing in advanced juniors (11 to 13 year olds) with 2400 points possible were; 4th – Kylie Hunter (995), 3rd – Brett Wiebe (1091), 2nd – Danie Rhodes (1222) and 1st – Chayana Stolem (1393) all receiving medals. Most improved shooter was Kylie Hunter with an increase of 40.75 points over the first four weeks. Other advanced junior participants were: Jakob Drabbs, Lauren Doney, Dustin Ostrom, Cordell Salsbery and Brent Yeska.

Senior division youth (14 & Over) with 2400 points possible were; 4th – Casey Olson (946), 3rd – Joseph Salveson (1276), 2nd – Charlee Rhodes (1341) and 1st Vinnessa Lundstrom (1463) all receiving medals. Other senior participants were: Dayton Hicks, Jamison Schaff and Challise Young. Most improved shooter was Joseph Salveson with an increase of 40.0 points over the first four weeks.

There were 10 participants in the pistol discipline with the following results on the county level. Advanced Junior’s (12 yr. olds) hold the pistol with both hands while seated with 2400 possible points. Participants were: Lauren Doney (1240) receiving the 1st place medal, Colt French and RC Skiff. Senior Division (14 yr. olds, holding the pistol while standing using both hands) 1st - place was Josh Salveson (1703. Senior Division (15 and over standing using one hand) participants were: 3rd – Kari Koss (1961), 2nd Kalen Wiebe (2272) and 1st – Tristen Brenner (2422). Other youth participating were; Vinnessa Lundstrom, Joseph Salveson and Jeret Warren. Most improved pistol shooter was Colt French with a 51.50 point increase.

In the archery division youth participated in primitive, unlimited and limited divisions. Primitive archery consists of a recurve or longbow, fingers and no sights. A total of 38 youth participated in the primitive archery division. In the beginning juniors (9 & 10 yr olds), the top 6 winners as follows; 6th – James Waters (602), 5th – Kaden Bishop (659), 4th – Kaden LaBrie (674), 3rd – Lavida White (916), 2nd – Zach Ulrich (1001) and 1st – Shane Soul (1069). James Waters received the most improved shooter with a 36.50 point increase. Other youth participating were; Brylee French, Spencer Gibbs, Isabelle Hallenberg, Seth Siewing, Lane Thompson, Aubri Werk and Caroline Wright.

In the advance junior (11 – 13 yr olds), the top 6 shooters were as follows; 6th – Parker Mortenson (1293), 5th – Aidan Wiese (1315), 4th – Chayana Stolem (1334), 3rd – Raina Mortenson (1372), 2nd – Kooper Oxarart (1430) and 1st – Grayson Waters (1762). Most improved shooter was Dayton Hicks with a 76.25 point increase. Other participants included; Jakob Drabbs, Colt French, Jess Lee, Georgia Orahood, Pierce Mortenson, Danie Rhodes, Frankie Werk and Brett Wiebe.

Youth who placed in the senior division (14 & over) were; 4th – David Skiff (1650), 3rd – Bailey Graves (1688), 2nd – Charlee Rhodes (1707) and 1st – Kalen Wiebe (1893). Most improved shooter was Britta Giblette with a 37.75 point increase. Other seniors participating were: Vinnessa Lundstrom, Peyton Meeks, Riley Mortenson, Austin Wiese and Challise Young.

In unlimited (compound, moveable or fixed sights and release, stabilizer 12 inches and over), 13 youth participated. Winning the beginning junior division was Justine Lamb with a score of 1532. In the advanced junior division, placers were; 4th – Chloe Hunter (1788), 3rd – Kendall Moore (1821), 2nd – Tanner Smith (1941) and 1st – Cordell Salsbery (2039). Other youth competing were; Connor Clausen, Kylie Hunter, Cash Salsbery and Erica Smith. In the senior division, 2nd went to Kari Koss (2163) and 1st to Tristen Brenner (2215). Other seniors were; Jalen Lamb and Kaden Moore.

In limited (compound, fixed sights and fingers), 2 youth participated. Winning the beginning junior division was Brenner Moore with a score of 470. Winning the advanced junior division was Dylan Brenner with a score of 1788. The most improved unlimited and limited shooter was Connor Clausen with a point increase of 48.75.

Kalen Wiebe received the Melissa Lundstrom Memorial Sportsmanship Awards. This award is voted upon by the shooting sports leaders and is based on a youth that shows exceptional sportsmanship and leadership with the other participants.

Sixty-two youth who competed on the county level also competed in the State wide postal shoot. This shoot takes in all youth within the state and uses the top 6 scores from the 10 week shoot and awards medals for teams and individual winners. Phillips County has done excellent again this year receiving 17 team medals.

The following youth were recognized as state teams (made up of 4 youth throughout the state). The age divisions consist of 9 – 10 year olds, 11 – 12 year olds, 13 – 14 year olds and 15 and over. Winners in the Primitive archery division: 9 & 10 year olds – 1st place team members were; Kaden LaBrie, Shane Soul, Lavida White and Zach Ulrich with a combined score of 3031. The 3rd place team members were; Kaden Bishop, Isabelle Hallenberg, Lane Thompson and James Waters scoring 2000. Primitive 11 & 12 year olds – 3rd place team members were; Colt French, Jess Lee, Danie Rhodes and Frankie Werk scoring 3350. Primitive 13 & 14 year olds – 1st place team members were; Raina Mortenson, Charlee Rhodes, David Skiff and Grayson Waters scoring 5146. 3rd place team members were; Dayton Hicks, Chayana Stolem, Aidan Wiese and Challise Young scoring 4103. Primitive 15 and over – 1st place team members were; Bailey Graves, Vinnessa Lundstrom, Kalen Wiebe and Austin Wiese scoring 5133. 2nd place team member was; Riley Mortenson scoring 4383 with 3 other members from around the state.

Limited 9 – 10 year old team winners were; 2nd place Brenner Moore with a score of 2640. Limited 11 – 12 year old team winners; 1st place, Dylan Brenner with a score of 5650 with 33 bull’s eyes.

Unlimited 11-12 year old 3rd place team members were; Erica Smith and Cash Salsbery with only two members on the team scoring 2327. 2nd place team members; Connor Clausen, Kylie Hunter, Kendall Moore and Cordell Salsbery with a score of 5576 with 37 bulls eye’s. Unlimited 13-14 year old team members were; 2nd place Kaden Moore and Tanner Smith scoring 6431 with 23 bulls eyes. 3rd place with only three members on the team, Chloe Hunter with a combined score of 2759 and 22 bulls’ eyes. Senior division (15 and over) members were; 2nd place team – Tristen Brenner and Jalen Lamb scoring 6757 and receiving 150 bulls’ eyes. 3rd place team with only 3 youth on the team was Kari Koss scoring 4877 with 72 bull’s eyes.

Our individual winners are youth that had the top scores in their age division. The Phillips County 4-H shooting sports program had 20 youth receive this honor. The first place winner received a plaque and the 2nd through 6th place winners received a ribbon. In the primitive 9 & 10 year olds were: 2nd – Shane Soul, 3rd – Zach Ulrich, 4th – Lavida White, and 6th – Kaden LaBrie. Primitive 11 – 12 year olds; 3rd – Kooper Oxarart, 4th – Jakob Drabbs, and 6th – Parker Mortenson. Primitive 13 & 14 year olds were: 1st – Grayson Waters, 2nd – David Skiff and 3rd – Charlee Rhodes. Primitive 15 & over: 1st – Kalen Wiebe, 2nd – Bailey Graves, 4th – Austin Wiese and 6th – Vinnessa Lundstrom.

Limited 11 – 12 year olds: 3rd – Dylan Brenner. Unlimited 9 & 10 year olds: 1st – Justine Lamb. Unlimited 11 - 12 year old: 3rd – Cordell Salsbery, 5th – Kendall Moore and 6th – Kylie Hunter. Unlimited 13 – 14 year old; 6th – Kaden Moore.

In the Air Pistol division for the state postal shoot, results are as follows. Team winners for 11 - 12 year olds (two hands and sitting were; 3rd – Lauren Doney, Colt French and RC Skiff scoring 2709 (three youth team). The 13 – 14 yr olds (two hands and standing) 2nd place team member was; Josh Salveson scoring 5454 (3 youth team).
