Carl A. Totman

MALTA-Carl A. Totman, retired optometrist, passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 14th. He was 90 years old.

Memorial services will be Friday, July 17, 2015 at 10 AM at the Kirkwood Memorial Chapel Memorials may be made to the travel fund of the Malta Shrine Club at PO Box 1355, Malta, MT, 59538

Dr. Totman, or “Doc” as he was known to many, was an avid hunter, fisherman, and all-around outdoorsman; those qualities being the reason for the family eventually moving to Montana. Doc was born on the family farm in Wood Center, IA on June 1, 1925, the youngest of nine children. He was the first of his family to graduate from high school, as well as college. He married Ada Grom and soon after, two daughters were born, Cindy and Kari. Doc and Ada later divorced, and Doc then married Pat Tweedy of Jacksonville, Oregon.

Doc served in the Navy during World War II and was able to participate in the Big Sky Honor Flight several years ago. He was a past President of the Montana Optometric Association, past Master of the Malta Masonic Lodge #57, and was included in many community organizations over the years, including the Malta Kiwanis, the Mustang Foundation, Hunter Safety Instructor, and the Malta Bucket of Blood. In later years he became a diehard Seattle Mariners baseball fan and enjoyed his golf game. He and his golf buddies made up the “Golf Society”, meeting every Wednesday. Members include Dale Enerson, Tom Schumacher, Larry Lett, Gary Young, Bill Henderson, Bill Smith, all of Malta, and Robert Byland of Ft. Benton. Dr. Totman was also a math and science teacher for many years in both North Central Iowa and Southern Oregon before continuing his education becoming a doctor of optometry. He practiced in Malta for over 40 years.

Survivors include Cindy (Ron) Scott, Kari (John) Carnahan, both of Malta, Fred (Evie) Perry, longtime hunting partner of Malta, Vicki Keeney of Hines, Oregon, and Toni Ven De Weghe, of Central Point, Oregon, along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
