One Nation, Under God

Hoping for some Good News Bears

Sunday marked an important day of the year for many of us sports fans who see light for their beloved football team. The NFL Hall of Fame Game; The first televised preseason game of the year.

A subpar year for the Chicago Bulls, a poor season for the White Sox and awesome Stanley Cup Win for the Chicago Blackhawks gave me mixed emotions this past year.

There’s no greater feeling than when your home team dominates a sport. The Blackhawks have done just that. After winning the Stanley Cup for the third time in six years, the team has solidified their place in sports history as a dynasty.

The win had a few Bears players yearning for a title of their own.

The moves the team made this offseason made me optimistic about the football season as well.

They fired everyone from last season and got rid of some locker room distractions. They had a solid draft by “expert” opinion. They signed a few free agents that will likely start on our terrible defense. They signed a solid coaching staff, including John Fox who coached both of his previous teams to the Super Bowl. Let’s not forget that the team switched from a tentative Tampa 2 defense to an attacking 3-4.

So after months of being sure about the changes the Bears have made, some knucklehead report put Chicago dead last in power rankings. My heart sank.

Last season this team broke my heart. They showed no heart, no killer instinct. As much as I like a good defense, the defense last season was horrific. They had no cohesiveness and seemed to not believe in their coaching staff or themselves.

Many people blamed Cutler, though he had one of the better seasons of his career.

I don’t care how good your offense is. Without any form of defense, you will lose. Of course if that terrible defense does force a turnover and sets the offense up on the opponents’ nine yard line and that offense still can’t score, what does that say?

I have to stop thinking about how horrible last season was, because if I bring up last season’s loss to the Dolphins, PJ might start yelling or crying. He still gets distraught about last season and he was only a few months old.

There’s always next season. Luckily, that season starts in about a month. Let’s Go
