3C girls set to clash in Malta Thursday

The North Country Lady Mavericks and Dodson Coyotes both have relatively young teams this year and they find themselves on the same side of the bracket in the 3C District Tournament set to be held at the Malta High School Gymnasium this weekend.

Thanks to their first place finish in the regular season, the Lady Mavericks have earned a first round bye and will see the winner of the Lustre-Dodson game set to kick off the tournament at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow.

The Lady Mavericks will have their first game on Friday at 11 a.m.

North Country extended their conference lead after defeating Lustre 54-28 last Friday in Hinsdale.

Dodson has only picked up two district wins this season, the latest an impressive 78-68 victory against the Frazer Lady Bearcubs last Friday on the team’s Senior Night. They lost 57-40 to Lustre on Monday night.

Dodson has surprised teams in the past two district tournaments and have advanced to the divisional round. This season with only three teams advancing they hope to play spoiler once again.

The North Country Mavericks have been dominant for years in 3C basketball and though teams are gunning for them, the team hopes to repeat its success from last season which ended in the state championship game.

On the other side of the bracket is 3C’s second seed Scobey, who also earned a first round in the tourney. Scobey will face the winner of Frazer-Nashua.

In a battle of eighth grade phenoms, the Dodson Coyotes picked up their fifth win of the season against Mya Fourstar and the Lady Bearcubs.

Dodson’s eighth grader Kailee Henry led the Lady Coyotes with 28 points, while Fourstar put up 50 points. A fourth quarter offensive explosion would lift Dodson to victory in the end.

Other scorers for Dodson included Shontelle Talks Different who scored 19 points. Donna Dale had 14 points. Christina Jaynes scored 11 points. Talyssa Horn-Oats had four points. Laney Cole had two points.

The teams were even after the first quarter, scoring 18 points apiece. Frazer went into halftime with a 38-37 lead. Both teams scored 17 in the third, making the score at the end of the period 55-54. Dodson would heat up in the fourth and rack up 24 points while holding Frazer to 13, making the final score 78-68.

In North Country’s win against Lustre, the team was led by senior Tatum Moore who scored 17 points. The win meant that Moore has never lost to a district foe in the regular season throughout her high school career in which she has started every game she has played.

Mickayla Johnson also scored 17 points in the win. Jada Sudbrack scored 15 points. Kayleigh Cummings had four points and Sarah Boucher had one point.
