Coyotes see first action

The Dodson Coyotes haven't been able to field their full team yet but the athletes that have hit the first three meets have been off to a good start.

Tyrese Messerly placed in his first high school event at the Porcupine Invitational hosted by Nashua. Messerly took fifth place in the high jump after clearing 5-2.

He also took eighth place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:46.96 and tenth place in the 1600 with a time of 6:10.59.

He recorded times at the Glasgow Invitational of 2:48.11 in the 800 and 6:35.57 in the 1600. He also posted a jump of 5-2 in the high jump.

David Jaynes has been getting better at shot put posting new personal bests at both meets. His newest personal best 32-10 came at the Porcupine Invitational. Before that he posted a throw of 32-7 ½ at the Cal Wearley Memorial in Havre last Wednesday.

"It's going pretty good," Jaynes said at the Cal Wearley meet. "I'm waiting for my injury to heal up all the way but my shot put seemed like it went pretty good today. It's definitely a new career best for high school, so that's a good thing.

Jaynes has been recovering from an ankle injury that has limited his running and throwing abilities this season.

"It was a pretty epic story," Jaynes said. "I was messing around in gym playing kickball. Someone kicked the ball and I went up with my amazing vertical to try catching it and when I came down, I landed on my toes instead of the bottom of my feet and it buckled and ripped some tendons.

At least he made the play.

"I caught the ball," Jaynes said. "The kid was out. We got to switch innings and stuff but I don't know if it was worth it."

Freshman Trevor Walker has been the team's only member to participate in four events in every meet so far this season.

In his first meet, the Glasgow Invitational, Walker posted a personal best in the 100 with a time of 14.52 and a personal best in shot put with a throw of 26-2 ½.

Walker posted personal bests at the Cal Wearley as well with a time of 29.32 in the 200 and a jump of 13-6 in the long jump.
