One Nation, Under God

Confessions of a sports fanatic

When I was younger, I appreciated sports of every kind. Sure I had my favorites in the sports realm. I first loved basketball. To this day, I think that the 90’s Bulls in their prime could beat any team today.

My second love was football. I always have been a fan of the Chicago Bears and I always will.

I have been a fan of the White Sox since I was seven and the Blackhawks since college.

People have always said hockey wasn’t a “black” sport, but to me hockey has always been exciting. If you’ve never seen a game, you should catch one before the playoffs end.

I’ve never played hockey a day in my life. I never even ice skated once. The blades kind of freak me out.

I have had a short stint at roller-skating.

My first pair of skates were the old school quad skates. I’ve hit up the roller rink a few times in my life, but I was never good at stopping. Yeah, like the guy from the Mighty Ducks.

One time I rolled down a hill in our backyard and I hit a divot and fell right on my back. You know that saying the bigger they are? Well, I fell pretty hard.

After that fall, I hated those skates and I saved my money for a pair of roller-blades. But not just any roller blades, they were aggressive inline skates, the type that people wear in the X-Games.

The ride on those bad-boys was pretty smooth.

Being afraid of heights, I never went off ramps at the local skate-park, but I’ve known plenty of kids that have. They weren’t kids looking to make any trouble, they just wanted to skate.

I’m glad that Malta is building a skate park for those kids-adults that are into those sports because even though it may not seem like it to the average Joe or Jane, skateboarding, skating, biking, etc. can be very productive.

If having a skate park can give our youth something challenging, fun and constructive to do, I’m for it.

Who knows, Malta just might produce a few great athletes from these parks that are being built.
