Penguin, Panther girls place at Whitewater meet

The Whitewater Invitational had to be postponed from its original April 28 to last Thursday due to the rain and snow that passed through Phillips County. As a result less teams showed up but the competition was fierce.

Turner also won the girls meet with 146. Whitewater took second with 91. Hays-Lodgepole took third with a score of 43. Opheim took fourth with 41 and Saco took fifth with 24.

Kayleigh Cummings led Whitewater’s Lady Penguins with wins in javelin and shot put. Her throws were 94-10 and 30-10 respectively.

“I didn’t get my personal best on either throwing event so that was frustrating,” Cummings said. “But you gotta look on the bright side.”

She also took second in the 3200, an event she hadn’t prepared for with a time of 17:25.56.

“There was no one running it so I said I would do it,” she said. “I figured I’d do it for the points. The worst I could get was second. I haven’t conditioned at all because I was just going to do throwing so I was dying a little bit.”

Whitewater’s Serena Sanguins had a nice meet taking first in discus after recording a throw of 74-8. Saco’s Challise Young took second with a throw of 64-10. Lady Penguin Bella Lawless took fourth with a throw of 63-10 and Alex Santillan had a throw of 59-1 to take fifth.

Sanguins also took fourth in the 400 with a time of 1:58.27.

Lawless took first in the 1600 with a time of 7:07.88. In doing so she posted a new personal best by seven seconds.

“I was really energetic today,” Lawless said. “Usually I’m kind of like lazy at it but I had some constant speed on it so I thought I did well today.”

The fact that there were only three runners didn’t slow Lawless down.

“I heard Rennay’s (Watkins from Turner) footsteps in the back and I was thinking she was going to get me,” Lawless said. “So then I kept going and I kind of looked and I knew I had to keep going with my constant speed.”

Sanguins took third in the 1600 with a time of 12:19.43. Sanguins also took fifth in shot put with a throw of 23-2.

Santillan took third in the 400 with a time of 1:50.19. She also took fifth in the 200 with a time of .45 and sixth in shot put with a throw of 22-8.

Bailey Funk was a little under the weather but she still participated in long jump and took second with a leap of 13-11.

Funk took first place in triple jump at the Gene Nelson Memorial on Friday in Wolf Point.

Saco’s Young had a throw of 51-6 in javelin to take fourth in the event. Young also took fourth in shot put with a throw of 24-3.
