Harriers improve times at Fort Peck

The Dodson-Whitewater Harriers had a solid outing at the Glasgow Scotties Invitational at Fort Peck last Saturday. The team had four athletes at the meet and three of those runners posted personal bests. The team will plan on attending two meets this week including the Hays Invitational at Mission Canyon that will be one of their most challenging outings of the season on Wednesday and the Havre Invitational on Saturday.

Tyrese Messerly posted the quickest time at 19:23, which is an improvement of 56 seconds. Trevor Walker posted a time of 20:06, an improvement of 48 seconds.

"Tyrese and Trevor definitely had personal bests," Coach Tianna Bloomer said. "They were very proud of themselves after that meet and were pretty ecstatic."

Serena Sanguins posted of time of 39:17. Sanguins saw the biggest improvement of all team members cutting two minutes and nineteen seconds off of her previous personal best.

"They're knocking off big chunks of seconds," Coach Bloomer said.

The team was without Jasper Doney due to an injury and they were also without Corbin LoneBear.

The course at Fort Peck allowed runners to post quicker times because of its straight and nearly level path.

"It was pouring down rain and it was absolutely soaking wet when they ran," Coach Bloomer said. "They came through and were completely drenched but the majority of the course was flat and on pavement so, they are really capable to get a good stride, get their pass and stay steady the whole time."

The day was also really cold and Coach Bloomer believes that the weather urged the runners to run faster.

"No one wanted to be out in it so I think that pushed them even further," Coach Bloomer said. "Even with my junior high and elementary kids, all of them got personal bests too. They did not want to be out there any longer."

The team will be taking on what will seem like a marathon at Hays on Thursday.

"I expect them not to do too hot at Hays because it's all uphill," Coach Bloomer said. "They've never had to do that before, so we will see."

The team will then travel to Havre for the Havre Invitational on Wednesday. The team rarely has two meets in a given week but Coach Bloomer hopes it will help them improve.

"I hope that it will help them just so that they are able to take a break on Sunday (rather than travel) and I think it will be good for them," Coach Bloomer said.
